The invasive plant Pittosporum undulatum Ventenat (Pittosporaceae) osting pest-stink bugs in Southern Brazil. Repositório Alice
MARSARO JUNIOR, A. L.; PANIZZI, A. R.; SAGIORATO, A. C.; LUCIN, T..
A survey of stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was conducted on the invasive tree, Pittosporum undulatum Ventenat (Pittosporaceae) in southern Brazil (Passo Fundo ? RS, latitude 28°15?46? S; longitude 52°24´24? W) aiming to know if this exotic plant might host these insects. Results indicated that P. undulatum was found hosting the stink bugs Chinavia erythrocnemis (Berg, 1878), Chinavia impicticornis (Stål, 1872) and Loxa deducta Walker, 1867. Chinavia impicticornis was rare (only one nymph collected) while C. erythrocnemis was much more abundant (30 adults collected), and nymphs were able to develop and adult to reproduce on fruits of P. undulatum in the laboratory; however, the viability of nymphs was negatively affected. Loxa deducta was...

The kinetics of lipase activity and hydrolytic rancidity of raw, parboiled, and extruded rice bran during storage. Repositório Alice
LACERDA, D. B. C. L.; SOARES JÚNIOR, M. S.; BASSINELLO, P. Z.; CALIARI, M.; CASTRO, M. V. L..
The main problem related to rice bran use is that it goes rancid right after its production. The objective of the present study was to apply a mathematical model to evaluate the kinetics of the lipase activity and hydrolytic rancidity of the raw rice bran (RRB), extruded rice bran (ERB), and parboiled rice bran (PRB) stored in low density polyethylene bags at room temperature for 180 days. Extrusion and parboiling were efficient in preventing free fatty acid formationin ERB and PRB.Extrusion reduced the velocity constant of lipase activity as compared to that of RRB while parboiling increased it, and both decreased the lipase activity after equilibrium from 150 days. The extrusion and parboiling treatments increased the velocity constants for the...

The late holocene upper montane cloud forest and high altitude grassland mosaic in the Serra da Igreja, Southern Brazil. Repositório Alice
SCHEER, M. B.; CURCIO, G. R.; RODERJAN, C. V..
Many soils of the highlands of Serra do Mar, as in other mountain ranges, have thick histic horizons that preserve high amounts of carbon. However, the age and constitution of the organic matter of these soils remain doubtful, with possible late Pleistocene or Holocene ages. This study was conducted in three profi les (two in grassland and one in forest) in Serra da Igreja highlands in the state of Paraná. We performed ?13C isotope analysis of organic matter in soil horizons to detect whether C3 or C4 plants dominated the past communities and 14C dating of the humin fraction to obtain the age of the studied horizons. C3 plants seem to have dominated the mountain ridges of Serra da Igreja since at least 3,000 years BP. Even though the Serra da Igreja may...

The Life Histories of the "Uruçu Amarela" Males (Melipona flavolineata, Apidae, Meliponini). Repositório Alice
VEIGA, J. C.; LEÃO, K. L.; COELHO, B. W.; QUEIROZ, A. C. M. de; MENEZES, C.; CONTRERA, F. A. L..
Here we describe the life histories of adult males of the the Amazonian stingless bee Melipona flavolineata Friese, commonly known as ?uruçu amarela?. Males reach sexual maturity inside nests, presenting seminal vesicles full of sperm cells and becoming able to fl y at a mean age of 10 and 15 days, respectively. They aggregate twice in their lives, once before leaving the nest, and another at external congregation sites, by using their capacity to reach congregation sites dependent on morphological attributes, such as large eyes and elongated thorax. Furthermore, we describe three atypical phenomena for Meliponini males: M. fl avolineata males have dimorphic color pattern; they lose their genital capsules, even when they fail to copulate; and penisless...

The life-time concept as a tool for erosion tolerance definition.

The MADS-box gene Agamous-like 11 is essential for seed morphogenesis in grapevine. Repositório Alice
MALABARBA, J.; BUFFON, V.; MARIATH, J. E. A.; GAETA, M. L.; DORNELAS, M. C.; MARGIS-PINHEIRO, M.; PASQUALI, G.; REVERS, L. F..
Abstract Despite the wide appreciation of seedless grapes, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that drive the stenospermocarpic seedless-type phenotype in grapevine. In order to address the molecular mechanisms that control seedlessness in grapevine, our study aimed to characterize VviAGL11, a class D MADS-box transcription factor gene that has been proposed as the major candidate gene involved in Vitis vinifera seed morphogenesis. VviAGL11 allelic variations in seeded and seedless grapevine cultivars were determined, and its correlations with allele-specific steady-state mRNA levels were investigated. VviAGL11 relative expression was significantly higher in seeds at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after fruit set, whereas in the seedless grape its transcript...

The match between microbial community structure and soil properties is modulated by land use types and sample origin within an integrated agroecosystem. Repositório Alice
LISBOA, F. J. G.; CHAER, G. M.; FERNANDES, M. F.; BERBARA, R. L. L.; MADARI, B. E..
It is of global concern to adopt measures to mitigate land degradation caused by agricultural production systems. One of the strategies proposed is to replace degraded pastures with agrosilvopastoral systems which integrate three different land-use types: crop production, livestock pasture and forestry plantation (denoted iCLF). However, little is known about the differences between iCLF and other land use types in terms of soil microbial community structure. Distance matrices based on individual soil chemical properties and individual soil microbial variables were correlated by Procrustes analysis and these re-lationships yielded vectors of residuals depicting these correlations (matches). These vectors were used as univariate response variables in an...

The meat market: a dea international perspective and an econometric behavioral model for Brazil. Repositório Alice
SOUZA, G. da S. e; GOMES, E. G.; TALAMINI, D. J. D.; MARRA, R..
We describe the relative participation of the Brazilian meat market (beef, pork and chicken) in total agribusiness exports and in total country exports. An analysis of the world meat market is carried out from the point of view of the values of consumption, production, exports and imports. A DEA (data envelopment analysis) approach is then used to generate classifications of the importance of countries in the meat world market, and the insertion of Brazil into this market is viewed from these perspectives. A partial equilibrium model for the meat market is fitted to Brazilian data by a three-stage least squares procedure. The model is consistent with the data and is used for simulation purposes. In this context, we investigate the joint and separate...

The meat market in Brazil: a partial equilibrium model.
A partial equilibrium model for the meat market is fit to Brazilian data by three stages least squares. The model is consistent with the data and may be used for simulation purposes. In this context we compare model simulations for the near future with the OECD/ Aglink outlook....

The microbiome of brazilian mangrove sediments as revealed by metagenomics. Repositório Alice

ABSTRACT: Here we embark in a deep metagenomic survey that revealed the taxonomic and potential metabolic pathways aspects of mangrove sediment microbiology. The extraction of DNA from sediment samples and the direct application of pyrosequencing resulted in approximately 215 Mb of data from four distinct mangrove areas (BrMgv01 to 04) in Brazil. The taxonomic approaches applied revealed the dominance of Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria in the samples. Paired statistical analysis showed higher proportions of specific taxonomic groups in each dataset. The metabolic reconstruction indicated the possible occurrence of processes modulated by the prevailing conditions found in mangrove sediments. In terms of carbon cycling, the sequences indicated...

The mitochondrial elongation factor LeEF-Tsmt is regulated during tomato fruit ripening and upon wounding and ethylene treatment. Repositório Alice
GIRARDI, C. L.; BERMUDEZ, K; BERNADAC, A.; CHAVEZ, A.; ZOUINE, M.; MIRANDA, F. J.; BOUZAYEN, M.; PECH, J.-C.; LATCH, A..
A gene encoding an elongation factor LeEF-Tsmt that participates in the protein synthesis process in mitochondria shows strong expression in ripening fruit as compared to other organs. It is strongly up-regulated during the first stages of the ripening process in parallel with the climacteric rise in respiration. LeEF-Tsmt expression is stimulated by ethylene, wounding and high temperature but ethylene-insensitive mutants exhibit normal expression. Transgenic fruit have been generated in which LeEF-Tsmt has been constitutively up- and down-regulated. Surprisingly, altering the expression of the gene by genetic transformation with antisense and sense LeEF-Tsmt constructs did not affect the pattern of respiration and ethylene production during ripening and...

The mosaic of habitats in the high-altitude Brazilian rupestrian fields is a hotspot for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Repositório Alice
CARVALHO, F. de; SOUZA, F. A. de; CARRENHO, R.; MOREIRA, F. M. de S.; JESUS, E. da C.; FERNANDES, G. W..
The high diversity in rupestrian field vegetation has been attributed to the mosaic of environments formed by several soil classes, rugged relief and microclimatic variation. Although advances in the knowledge of some biological areas in rupestrian fields have been made, little is known about the relevance of soil microorganisms and their relationships with the vegetation. Symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is one of the most studied interactions between microorganisms and plants, because they are ubiquitous and contribute to the sustainability of ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and diversity of AMF species and to evaluate their relationship with soil physicochemical attributes and plant diversity in different...
