Linné, Carl von. |
Draft of a letter from Linnaeus fil. to Clas Alströmer, in response to a letter from the latter dated 28 April 1781. Comments on 'the enormous collections of nature's riches' present in London, far greater than what he had imagined. Impossible to go through everything. Has spent a fortnight in London and finds it very expensive. Banks and Solander have been immensely kind. Linnaeus fil. has spent much time going through part of the collection recently acquired by Banks at auction (Fothergill's). Impressed by British institutions which are so much richer than the Swedish ones, but thinks Sweden is equal in terms of scientific knowledge. |

Linnaeus fil. is glad to know that some of the plants and seeds he has sent home have flowered. The garden at Uppsala is the main reason why he travelled abroad, to work on its behalf. He is saddened that his efforts have not always been appreciated and has been unfailry criticized - for example for leaving only useless seeds in it. He has in general been criticized at home while in fact he is doing his best. He feels this deeply. He is furious that Professor Thunberg has claimed to have... |

Linaneus fil. thanks her for her pleasant letter, praises her for her knowledge of botany, and thanks her for her praises concerning his father. He only received her letter at the end of the past month, whereas he received a letter from Mr. Gouan in Montpellier within a fortnight. He wishes to fulfill her requests, but stresses that he cannot prevent the damage the plants might incur in transit, or eaten by insects. He will therefore send them drawn and described. Draft of a letter from Carl Linnaeus fil. to Nicolaas Laurens Burman (1734–1793). Linnaeus fil. feels overwhelmed and ashamed to start this letter and states the reasons of his negligence. He has been distracted these years by various things, firstly his duties as demonstrator, secondly his second office, that of professor, and thirdly his travels through South Sweden and Skåne. He has published his second decade of plants, which Burman can get from Schultz's. Mentions Johan Peter Falk (1733–1774). He wishes he had more plants to describe, especially those from Europe, even the commonest. Comments on the many plants names and their synonyms, mentioning Caspar Bauhin's "Pinax".
