Demand for seasonal wage labour in the French fruit and vegetable sector: what does family farming hide? Inra
Darpeix, A.; Bignebat, C.; Perrier-Cornet, P.; IAAE, International Association of Agricultural Economists (USA).
Seasonal wage labour was rarely distinguished from the permanent one in farm-household models although it has sharply increased in developed countries. Therefore, we propose to endogenize the demand for this peculiar labour type and highlight the trade-offs for the various labour combinations on farms. We use data on fruit and vegetables farms drawn from the 2000 French agricultural census. We show that seasonal wage labour is a substitute for permanent wage employment, and doesn't entirely follow the seasonality of the agricultural activity : competition on the labour and product markets play a significant role in the employment of labour types.

Use of prescribed burning for restoration and maintenance of ecological conditions: Predicting and managing fire injury and tree mortality Inra
Ryan, K.; Rigolot, E.; Rego, F.; Botelho, H.; Vega Hildago, J.A.; Fernandes, P.; Sofronova, T..
Managers and scientists often seek to use fire to restore and maintain historic or natural species composition, stand structure, wildlife habitat, landscape pattern and ecological functioning. Successful use of under-burning in forests and woodlands requires integration of fi re behavior and fire effects knowledge into the planning, implementation, and monitoring of restoration projects. Trees consist of three highly integrated organs: crown, roots, and stem or bole. These organs have differing physiological functions and morphological properties that are important considerations in prescribed burning. Fires burning in various vegetative fuel complexes, and under differing weather conditions, have typical energy release characteristics and associated...

Can the CAP payments facilitate the growth of individual farms in the NMS post-EU accession? Inra
Latruffe, L.; Davidova, S.; Douarin, E.; Gorton, M.; AES, Agricultural Economics Society (GBR); EAAE, European Association of Agricultural Economists (NLD).
The impact of the introduction of the EU Single Area Payments (SAP) on farm strategy is investigated for a sample of Lithuanian farms, utilising farm accounting and survey data. The applications of two investment models demonstrate that the credit market in Lithuania was imperfect prior to accession and that some farms were financially constrained. The introduction of the SAP has a significant, positive influence on farmers’ intentions to expand their farm area compared to a baseline scenario of the continuation of pre-accession policy. The switch in policy has a more pronounced effect on farms that were previously credit constrained. While the SAP has been presented as a policy support that is decoupled from production, its introduction will nevertheless...

Residential equilibria in a green urban area Inra
Cavailhes, J.; Peeters, D.; Université de Fribourg, Faculté des Sciences Economiques et Sociales. Département d'Economie Politique (CHE).
‘Green’ amenities attract households into the countryside around cities where a mixed residential and agricultural land use prevails. We model a land market where two rents co-exist for those two land uses, and define the zoning scheme that maximizes landowners’ rent by providing to households the optimal quantity of agricultural amenities. Urban configurations and analytical properties of the equilibria are presented. An evaluation of the main effects of zoning is made for the Dijon (France) periurban belt, by an econometric model with a selection bias: zoning provides more ‘greenness’ in view from residences, due to abundant public open spaces.

Transmission ecology of Echinococcus in China: advances and hot questions Inra
Giraudoux, P.; Raoul, F.; QUERE, J.P.; Pleydell, D.; Wang, Q.; Qiu, J.; Yang, W.; Craig, P.S..
In continental China Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) transmission intensity is spatially heterogeneous and unstable. This instability makes transmission responsive to fox/dog dosing control campaigns and variations in host population densities. Parasite extinction may occur as a consequence of landscape/land use change (e.g. Zhang-Puma area of southern Gansu, Northern Liu Pan Shan, Ningxia). By contrast, intensive and more stable transmission occurs in some areas of the Tibetan plateau due to sustainable high densities of small mammal intermediate host populations, the existence of two species of fox definitive hosts, and the extremely high number of dogs in and around villages with easy access to small mammal colonies. Yak herd management and subsequent...

Identification and characterization of forest edge segments for mapping edge diversity in rural landscapes Inra
Deconchat, M.; Alignier, A.; ESPY, P.; Ladet, S..
Forest edges are key components of rural landscapes and they influence major ecological processes. There is a variability of forest edges, according to their physiognomy, orientation, history and topography, but few methods are available to identify automatically these different types of edges and to map them at a large scale. We propose to identify edge segments based on morphological subdivision of forest boundaries. These segments can be mapped and characterized by other spatial data. A procedure based on Arcgis tools, applied on the output from GUIDOS tools, is used to identify edge segments. We provide examples of edge segments descriptors obtained from a digital elevation model and from a landcover map. Results showed the feasibility of the automatic...

Merot, P.; Gascuel, C.; Corgne, S.; Delahaye, D.; Joannon, A.; Planchon, O.; Arrondeau, J.P.; Desnos, P..
CLIMASTER, is a comprehensive program built in a participative way, associatingresearchers, farmer organisations and water management offices, to tackle the issue of the interaction between the climatic change, the farming systems, the natural resources and the regional development. It concerns the 4 administrative regions of West France, Brittany, Basse Normandie, Poitou-Charentes and Pays de Loire, that present quite specific characteristics : Importance of coastal issues, large areas of wetlands; farming systems mainly devoted to animal breeding; water resources threatened by scarcity and anthropic impacts, environmental concerns. Although the interest of scientists on climatic changes focused rarelyon this western region, it appears that farmers and...

Providing services to INRA and the international agricultural community: ProdInra & the Integrated Information System. Inra
Le Hénaff, D.; Aventurier, P..
The main benefit of open archives is to optimize the visibility of research results. Universities & research institutes have been setting up OAI compliant repositories with this aim in mind.INRA, a French organization and also the largest agricultural research institute in Europe has set up such a repository in 2005.INRA needs to identify and track its production because it must evaluate individuals, the labs, the departments, etc. and also to produce strategic indicators about the trends of our research activity. These indicators help INRA to direct funding and access the most advanced projects. In 2005, INRA planned a 5-years project to create an Integrated Information System (IIS) that combines different internal applications in order to exchange data...

The participation of the poor in supermarket-driven chains in Vietnam Inra
Moustier, P.; Figuié, M.; Dao, T.A.; Phan, T.G.T.; Vu, T.B.; Nguyen, T.T.L.; EAAE, European Association of Agricultural Economists (NLD).
In Vietnam, the marketing of fruits and vegetables is characterized by a diversity of distribution chains that includes formal markets, street vendors, shops and supermarkets. Presently, the government is promoting the expansion of supermarket distribution and eliminating all informal trade. The study investigates the hypothesis that due to the use of labor-saving and capital intensive technologies employed by supermarkets, poorer segments of the population may be excluded from potential benefits. Surveys of poor consumers. access to different retailing points were made in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Case studies built around vegetable, lychee and flavored rice chains based on in-depth interviews with representative samples of stakeholders along the chains...

Assessment of the susceptibility to pests and diseases of 36 apple cultivars in 4 low-input organic orchards in France Inra
Parveaud, C.E.; Gomez, C.; Libourel, G.; Romet, L.; Warlop, F.; Simon, S.; Brun, L.; Pouzoulet, D.; Delebecq, A.; Tournant, L.; Oste, S.; Laurens, F..
One of the keystones of the organic orchard is the cultivar choice as one element of pest and disease control. However, few exhaustive data sets concerning the cultivar susceptibility to pests and diseases are available for growers. In order to identify cultivars adapted to organic production methods, the susceptibility to scab, aphids and powdery mildew and the agronomic properties of 36 cultivars were assessed in four French sites under different pedo-climatic conditions. Different levels of susceptibility to scab were observed for 23 scab Vf-resistant and 13 other cultivars. In the North of Frence where Vf resistance is overcome, the Vf cultivars displayed different levels of scab severity. A high variability in the susceptibility to aphids was observed...
