| A preliminary account of the Cambridge expedition which was at work during the summer of 1938 in West Spitsbergen , under the leadership of L. H. McCabe, was given in The Polar Record, No. 16. The object of the expedition was to carry out geomorphological work in continuation of W. V. Lewis's investigations in cirque development in Iceland in 1937. Six weeks were spent in the Campbell Range on the east side of Billefjorden, Klaas Billen Bay. One party then visited the Stubendorff Mountains, and another visited Gips Valley, inland from the Campbell Range. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

| Le verdissement des huîtres consiste en une pigmentation de couleur verte affectant plusieurs organes de ces mollusques (manteau, branchies, épithélium intestinal). Il se produit d'une façon plus ou moins intense et régulière dans d'assez nombreuses régions, mais ne présente une grande importance que dans le bassin de Marennes. Le verdissement existe faiblement dans les parcs en mer; ce n'est que dans les claires qu'il se manifeste avec intensité et imprime aux huîtres un aspect si caractéristique correspondant à une qualité commerciale bien tranchée (huîtres vertes). |

| At the beginning of 1939, the Marine Fisheries Scientific and Technical Office entered its 20th year of existence. To celebrate this birthday, a special volume, presenting the aim of this state Office and summarizing its work since its creation, was published. | When in the summer of 1937 foot-and-mouth disease began to prevail among the cattle of Holland and spread rapidly in spite of extensive measures taken by the Dutch Veterinary Government Inspection, it was to be expected that also those animals in the Zoological Gardens, susceptible to this disease, would be affected. Experience gained during earlier extensive foot-and-mouth-disease epizooticae has proved that this disease, singularly contagious for ruminants, could not be prevented notwithstanding the secluded spot occupied by these animals in the Zoological Gardens. |

| The Scottish National Zoological Park at Edinburgh has been notably successful in keeping and breeding penguins. It is happy in possessing as a friend and benefactor, Mr Theodore E. Salvesen, head of the firm of Christian Salvesen & Co., Leith, to whose interest and generosity it owes the great number of penguins it has possessed. Of the seventeen known species of penguins, seven are represented in the Park, the king (Aptenodytes patagonica Miller), gentu (Pygoscelis papua Forster), ringed (Pygoscelis antarctica Forster), macaroni (Catarrhactes chrysolophus Brandt), Magellan (Spheniscus magellanicus Forster), Peruvian (Spheniscus humboldti Meyen) and black-footed (Spheniscus demersus L.). | Bei einem Känguruh, Macropus giganteus Zimm., wurde die Rangordnung der Sinne untersucht. Es stellte sich heraus, dass der Geruchssinn bei weitem überwiegend war und der Gesichtssinn erst an zweiter Stelle kam. Weiter wurde das Erstreben bevorzugten Futters und die Erinnerung untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass das Tier sogar bei erschwerten Aufgaben beides positiv löste. Weiss-schwarz-Dressur wurde in 3 verschiedenen Methoden ausgeübt: Bei völliger Ausschaltung des Geruchssinnes wurde in 4 Tagen die Weiss-Dressur erlernt. Zum Schluss ist die Intelligenz untersucht worden. Sehr hoch ist diese nicht anzuschlagen, aber „stumpfsinnig” sind die Tiere allerwenigst. |

| Dr. Ph. H. Kuenen kindly entrusted me with a suite of corals collected by him on the island Flores during his cruise with the Expedition on board of H.M. „Willebrord Snellius”. The exact locality is North coast near Papang where the road Papang-Rioeng-Rawoe forkes, 550 m above sea level. Nine different species were collected. Among these is one new species, Fungophyllia millepunctata. Of one coral, a Porites, the species could not be identified with certainty, though it strongly resembles a Porites species from the Miocene Progo-beds of Java. From the other 7 corals the following data on their stratigraphical distribution are known. |

| Die Veröffentlichung von zwei neuen Funden aus dem Zweistromlande (1, 2, 3) ist geeignet, mehr Licht auf die viel umstrittene Frage zu werfen, welcher Art die von den alten Sumerern im dritten vorchristlichen Jahrtausend als Zugtiere vor den Kriegswagen verwendeten Einhufer angehört haben. Bekanntlich stehen sich diesbezüglich mehrere Anschauungen gegenüber: die einen behaupten, diese Tiere wären Esel oder Angehörige des dort wild vorkommenden syrischen Halbesels (Equus hemionus hemippus Geoffr.), die anderen sehen in ihnen Pferde oder Maultiere, also Bastarde von Pferden, und sind geneigt, diese Darstellungen als Beweise für ein weit höheres Alter der Pferdezucht im vorderen Orient anzusehen, als man früher angenommen hatte.
