A first contribution to our knowledge of the flora of the Talaud Islands and Morotai 16
Holthuis, L.B.; Lam, H.J..
The Talaud Islands are forming part of the Malay Archipelago, being situated north of Celebes and the Moluccas, south of Mindanao and east of the Sangihe group, between 3°45’ and 5°35’ N. lat. and 126°32’ and 127°10’ E. long. The main group consists of three larger islands, viz. Karakelong, Salebaboe and Kaboeroeang. The Nenoesa islands, a group formed by the small islands of Garete, Karaton, Merampi, Mengkopoe, Intata, Kakelotan and Maroh are situated northeast of the main group, including also Miangas (Palmas), an islet about 65 miles north of Karakelong, near Mindanao.

Paiva Neto,J. E. de.
In the beginning of this work a brief idea was given on what is understood as "clay", on the scientific methods applied to the study of the matter "clay" as well as on its conception with regard to the edaphic studies. A description is given of the methods of total and natural mechanical analyses which were employed in the agro-geological Department. The work is illustrated by a graphic showing the fractions of the mechanical analysis of the chief great soil types of the State of São Paulo. The fraction clay is then studied by chemical way in the following sequence : 1.° total chemical analysis, 2.° partial chemical analysis, 3.° chemical analysis of the Helmholz layer and 4.° study of the fixation of the ion Ca+ + in the already mentioned Helmholz layer....

A monograph of the genus Protium and some allied genera (Burseraceae) 16
Swart, J.J..
My revision of the Burseraceae in Pulle’s Flora of Suriname is extended here to a monographic treatment of those Burseraceous genera of which representatives occur in Suriname. Engler’s monograph of this family dates from nearly sixty years ago, and since that time many new species have been published. These additions and the large number of minor and major problems which presented themselves, doubtless justify the publication of this study. I am bound to admit however that not all problems could be solved. The present paper is divided into a General Part and a Taxonomic Part. The critical remarks concerning the whole family and its tribes are dealt with in the General Part, and those referring to the separate genera and species are to be found in the...

A tentative list of wild Pacific Sapotaceae, except those from New Caledonia 16
Lam, H.J..
Several years ago the Director of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, was kind enough to lend me the Sapotaceous material from the Pacific region preserved in its Herbarium. It has been enumerated underneath together with additional material from other herbaria. These have been quoted by means of the following abbreviations, which are taken from Lanjouw’s list, published in Chronica Botanica V, 1932, 142. A. = Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, Jamaica Plain (Mass.), U.S.A. B. = Botanisches Museum, Berlin-Dahlem. Bish. = Bernice P. Bish. Museum, Honolulu, Hawaiian Isl. and some specimens from the private herbarium of Mr O. Degener. Bz. = Herbarium, Gov. Botanic Gardens, Buitenzorg, Java. Cal. = California Botanical Gardens, San Francisco. G. =...

Mendes,A. J. T..

An historical review of the identification of the Netherlands’ Charophyta 16
Zaneveld, J.S..
In 1938, Verdam published an account of the then-known Charophyta of the Netherlands in the English language (cf. this journal, vol. 3), and one year later (1939) another in our own language in “Nederlandsch Kruidkundig Archief”. In both papers reference was made to only five Netherlands’ publications on the same subject, the oldest of which is dating from 1846. In studying i.a. the history of the Malaysian Charophyta (Zaneveld, 1940) I found that much more was published on the Charophyta of our Low Countries. As will be seen below, it became evident that the first printed record of a Netherlands’ Charophyte dates as far back as 1636. It seems worth while to publish these notes on the history of the identification of our Charophyta as, moreover, a number...

Sieverts (1934: Foss. Brechiten a. d. ostind. Arch.1); man...

Coeficiente de variação e índice de variança 53
Brieger,F. G..
The object of the present paper is a study of the usefulness of two relative measures of variation, the well known coefficient oj variation and a new term proposed in this paper and called the index of variance. These terms are defined by the equations : coefficient of variation : σ% = s /v/v. 100 index of variance :σ/ √. 1. It is shown that, for theoretical reasons, only the index of variance may be expected to be constant. Six different experimental series actually proved this constancy, showing at the same time the variability of the coefficient of variation which proved to be dependent upon the respective mean. The coefficient of variation becomes approximately constant when the respective means are sufficiently distant from the absolute limit zero or...

Brieger,F. G.; Lima,A. Rodrigues; Forster,R..
1) The object of the experiment presented in this publication was a detailed comparison between progenies of the varieties Virginia and Sumatra of the collection of the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas. We intended to decide whether these strains were sufficiently heterogeneous to permit further selections or whether they were already so uniform as to allow a reduction in their number within our collection. 2) A preliminary experiment in 1939/40 showed clearly that some of the 7 types introduced as Sumatra were less resistant than others, and the experiment was thus continued "with only four of them. 3) The lay-out of the final experiment was such as to permit both a complete analysis of soil heterogeneity and of differences between the genetically...

Medina,J. C.; Jensen,G. O.; Neri,J. P..
A study was made of the chemical composition of samples of the ribbons taken from the rami stalks at successive stages of growth with the object of determining the percentage oí lignin, cellulose, pectin, pentosans and of some substances not belonging to the cell wall. After an initial decrease, the percentage of ash increased as the plant grew and matured. The maximum (17,5%) was reached when the plant was 105 days old. The percentage of cellulose increased regularly and reached a maximum (38,2%) when the plant was 75 days old. Subsequently there was a decrease as the plant grew older. After an initial increase, the percentage of lignin decreased somewhat and again increased as the plant matured. The maximum (14,5%), however, was observed when the plant...
