If you ask the layman: “What is a museum?”, he will answer. “A museum is a display of objects, that have an aesthetic value or scientific interest; the scope of a museum is to improve the taste of the visitor, is to give him, by visual means, aesthetic or intellectual enjoyment, to satisfy his curiosity, to show him the true and real things (a classic sculpture, an Indian weapon or a deepsea fish) instead of a documentary film, a radio report, or the descriptions and pictures in his books and magazines.” If an architect is in charge of designing a museum, he will see to it that the wallcases and the free-standing objects receive the right light and that the public and the conditioned air can circulate freely. He will design an entrance hall, an exhibition...

Since F. Azpeitia Moros, in 1927 (Revista Acad. Cienc. Madrid, Vol. 23, 1927, p. 511—530), published his account of the specimens of Conus gloriamaris in public and private collections and in literature, many new and interesting details on the adventures of various individuals have come to my knowledge. This has led me to make systematic inquiries in the shell collections all over the world and, finally, to compile the following new survey of the representatives of this distinguished species. In spite of many efforts various particulars could not be found out; hence the author is well aware that the revision is not a final one. She hopes, however, that this contribution may serve to draw the attention of systematists and cabinet owners to this idol of...

With great pleasure I dedicate the two new species described below to the two Amsterdam zoologists Prof. L. F. DE BEAUFORT and Prof. J. E. W. IHLE, who with their important researches in various branches of zoology both have so largely contributed to the progress of this science. The two species described here are parasites of Scylla serrata (Forsk.); they are the only specimens until now known to infest this species of Portunid crab.

The distribution of fresh-water fishes like that of other groups, has been widely utilized by zoogeographers, but with widely divergent acumen and success. At one extreme are those non-ichthyologists who have uncritically utilized for evidence certain groups whose distribution happens to support whatever theory they may be espousing. At the other extreme is the work of careful ichthyologists like DE BEAUFORT (1913) and REGAN (1922) whose thorough knowledge of the groups with which they are working demands the most careful consideration of their conclusions. However, no zoogeographer who utilizes the evidence of diverse groups can be familiar at first hand with all of them, and the difficulty facing such workers is that of seeking out the really dependable...

Wohl...

Coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.) were grown in nutrient solutions for the purpose of studying deficiency symptoms of the following elements : nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulphur and iron. The methods employed in the growing of coffee plants in the nutrient solutions are described. After preliminary tests with several nutrient solutions Hoagland's formula was selected as most suitable for the present tests. However, the quantity of phosphate employed in the basic nutrient solution was reduced to one third of that given in Hoagland's formula. This reduction in phosphate was made because of the previous results obtained by Jacob which seemed to indicate that the coffee plant requires only very small amounts of phosphorus. In the...

Material: Studies were made mainly with Ascaris megalocephála Cloq. univalens and bivalens, and also with Tityus bahiensis Perty. 1) Somatic pairing of heterochromatic regions. The heterochromatic ends of the somatic chromosomes in Ascaris show a very strong tendency for unspecifical somatic pairing which may occur between parts of different chromosomes (Figs. 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18,), between the two ends of the same chromosome either directly (Figs. 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18) or inversely (Fig. 8, in the arrow) and also within a same chromosomal arm (Fig. 6). 2) During the early first cleavage division the chomosomes are an isodiametric cylinder (Figs. 6, 9, 11, 13, 14). But in later metaphase the ends become club shaped...

The rich material of Copepods collected by the Snellius Expedition in the seas of the Eastern part of the Malay Archipelago was placed at my disposal in 1943 by Prof. Dr. H. Boschma. The material proved to be very interesting and contained, besides new species, many rare forms found for the first time in the Indo-pacific area. A report on the families Calanidae, Eucalanidae, Paracalanidae, and Pseudocalanidae will be published in Temminckia, vol. VIII, pp. 1-181. A report on the family Aetideidae was completed in 1946 but, as the printing difficulties created by the war have not yet sufficiently improved to warrant the publication of this report within a short time, it seems desirable to publish a preliminary account of some new or interesting forms....

The mechanisation of the dairy industry in New South Wales has proceeded gradually over the past fifty years; however, the rate of increase in the use of mechanised equipment during that period has been far from uniform. The introduction of milking machines at the turn of the century resulted in the first significant use of machinery in the dairy industry. Prior to 1900 the quantity and value of machinery on dairy farms was almost negligible, but by 1920 dairy machinery was valued at almost £1 million, the value having doubled between 1900 and 1910, while between 1910 and 1920 it almost doubled again. Nevertheless, during the twenties the use of machinery did not continue to expand at such a rapid rate as during the years prior to 1920, and with the onset...
