The genus Antemetula Rehder in the Indo- Westpacific area, with the description of two new fossil species Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
Rehder (1943: 199) pointed out, that Buccinum clathratum Adams & Reeve, 1848, is the type of the genus Metula H.& A. Adams, 1858. For the species congeneric with Buccinum metula Hinds, 1844, he proposed the generic name Antemetula, with that species as the type. Bucchium metula was described by Hinds from a specimen dredged by the Sulphur off the West coast of Veragua, at a depth of a few fathoms. There are no other records of the species from the American West coast. Smith (1904: 465) called attention to the fact that young specimens of Buccinum mitrella Adams & Reeve, 1848, match Hinds’s figure of B. metula. B. mitrella was described from one or more specimens dredged by the Samarang in the China Sea, at a depth of 10 fathoms, and has been...

The Geology of the Bergamasc Alps Lombardia Italy Naturalis
Sitter, L.U. de; Sitter-Koomans, C.M. de.
In the Bergamasc Alps we have observed one major unconformity between the Basement rock and the overlying Permian. The total absence of any recognisable Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks accentuates this unconformity, and moreover this enormous hiatus makes the dating of any Palaeozoic event impossible. However, by comparison with the Central Alps and Kärnten, we learned that the Asturian orogenitic phase precedes the deposition of the first volcanic sediments. In analogy with the Aar and Gotthard masses we presumed the intrusion of the less metamorphic ortho rocks of the Basement, the granodiorite and the gneiss chiaro, to be of Upper Carboniferous age. The close resemblance of the chemical composition and differentiation of the Permian volcanic rocks and the...

The growth of our Giraffes and Giraffe-calves Naturalis
Reventlow, Axel.
As far as I can recollect, only few reliable informations have been published concerning the total height and weight of new-born giraffe-calves; and as constant measuring of the growth of giraffes probably only in very few cases has been undertaken, I should like, by the following article, to contribute a little to the clearing of these matters. My opservations were made from March, 1939, until December, 1948, on 10 different giraffes whom I had the opportunity of studying at close quarters here in the Zoological Gardens of Copenhagen. On October 24th, 1915, we got a still-born giraffe-calf with a weight of 67,5 kg, the height unfortunately was not recorded.

The Isopoda and Tanaidacea of the Netherlands, including the description of a new species of Limnoria Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The Isopod and Tanaidacean Crustacea of the Netherlands have not been treated as a whole since 1889, when Hoek published the second part of his Crustacea Neerlandica dealing with the Isopoda and Amphipoda. Hoek in this paper mentioned 25 species of Isopoda, 9 of which are marine forms, 1 a freshwater form and 15 terrestrial, no Dutch Tanaidacea were known to Hoek. At present we know 49 species of Dutch Isopoda, of which 20 are marine, 2 are freshwater forms and 27 are terrestrial, furthermore three species of Tanaidacea are known from this country. The present paper is an enumeration of all Dutch species of the two above mentioned groups, with their distribution within our country and, if necessary, with remarks on their synonymy and ecology. A volume on...

The snakes of Somaliland and the Sokotra Islands Naturalis
Parker, H.W..
The systematic status of the snakes recorded from the area has been reinvestigated, often in the light of new material. Allometric growth is shown to occur in several species and taxonomic errors arising from its previous non-recognition are rectified. The same feature is also used to determine the respective ontogenetic levels of closely allied forms. The fauna of the Sokotra group is shown to have greater relationships with the Palaearctic and Oriental regions than with the Ethiopian and to consist of mainly primitive types; they are assumed to have been isolated in the islands since the mid-Miocene. The mainland fauna, though predominantly Ethiopian, contains a strong northern admixture and this element predominates in the northern coastal plain which...

The species of Metopograpsus (Crustacea, Brachyura) Naturalis
Tweedie, M.W.F..
The most recent comprehensive treatment of this Indo-Pacific genus ¹) is that of TESCH (1918, p. 78-82). Here seven species are recognised with the reservation that M. eydouxi H. Milne Edwards and M. thukuhar (Owen) are possibly not distinct. In 1936 (TWEEDIE 1936, p. 49) I questioned the validity of the character used to separate M. latifrons (White) and M. maculatus H. M.-E., the relation of carapace length and breadth, and placed maculatus in the synonymy of latifrons.

The Umbrella Bird Naturalis
Crandall, Lee S..
When CHARLES CORDIER arrived from Costa Rica on October 9, 1942, bringing with him, among other great rarities, three Bare-necked Umbrella Birds (Cephalopterus ornatus glabricollis), it seemed to us that the mere possession of such fabulous creatures was satisfaction enough. True, they were not beautiful — some realists have even gone so far as to name them “ugly” — and like all Cotingas, they were definitely dull. But in spite of all, they really were Umbrella Birds and if we could solve the problem of their long term requirements, they must reveal to us much that had been unknown. For only once before, as far as we can learn, has an Umbrella Bird been kept in captivity in either Europe or North America. According to a note by FRANK FINN in ‘Avicultural...

Three different agglomerations of blood cells in a Caliroa limacina larva Naturalis
Barendrecht, G..
Some time ago in our laboratory a number of larvae of Caliroa limacina Retz., the well known slug like sawfly larva of the pear, were fixed in toto and sectioned into complete series, which were coloured with EHRLICH’S or HEIDENHAIN’S haematoxylin and counterstained with eosin. Most of these larvae belonged to the last instar but one, i.e., the last instar still feeding and showing the typical mucous covering. The very last instar does not feed any more and lacks the mucous covering, showing the yellow cuticle. As in many other insects, in these larvae the blood cells during fixation agglutinate in a peculiar way. They constitute in the sections compact cell masses imitating a real tissue, but showing, in our preparations, hardly any cell boundaries. Such...

Toegepaste wetenschap in de branding Naturalis
Swellengrebel, N.H..

Training a young Chimpanzee to attend to acoustic stimuli Naturalis
Bierens de Haan, J.A..
For certain reasons I wished to train a young chimpanzee to choose from two similar boxes the one characterised by the ticking of a metronome inside it. My subject was a young male chimpanzee (Pan leucoprymnus Lesson), approximately three years old, Tommy by name. He was a good-natured chap, quite tame, and already for some years in captivity. When we knew each other a little better, he would welcome me every morning with a hearty “uhuh”, as soon as he heard my steps, and after the experiments of the day we would take leave by shaking hands as old friends. Tommy was rather lazy and not so playful as most young chimpanzees, but this quality made working with him easier and more regular. With a few exceptions it did not give much trouble to make 50—60 trials...

Um enrolamento das fôlhas do fumo de causa genética Bragantia
Costa,A. S.; Forster,R..
A type of leaf-roll has been noticed for many years in commercial tobacco plantings in the State of S. Paulo. Leaf-roll plants were supposed to be affected by a virus disease, but repeated attempts to transmit it by grafting, juice inoculation and by insect vectors failed consistently. Later studies showed that the leaf-roll condition is due to genetic factors and that probably more than a pair of recessive genes are involved in its transmission. Even after the genetic nature of the leaf-roll condition was definitely established, attempts were made to induce the leaf-roll condition in plants genetically normal by several methods : 1. Spraying their leaves with the juice from leaf-roll plants ; 2. Approach-grafting a leaf-roll scion onto a normal plant and...
