Observações citológicas em Coffea: XVII - O saco embrionário em Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner Bragantia
Mendes,Cândida H. T..
A study has been made of the embryo sac in self-sterile Coffea canephora flowers of different ages. The process was observed to be normal and included the formation of two synergides and one egg cell in the micropilar region, three antipodals at the chalazal region and two polar nuclei lying in the middle of the sac. It is known that in the species C. arabica the embryo sac formation is complete at the time the flowers open. Embryo sac formation in C. canephora is slightly delayed and it is not complete until the day following opening of the flowers. It was also determined that in C. canephora shedding of pollen begins shortly after the flowers open and the pollen was functional at least for two days. Thus the results of the present study indicate that the...

Observações preliminares sôbre caponização de frangos "Leghorn" com estrogênios Anais da ESALQ
Graner,E. A.; Trivelin,A. P..
The effect of "Capastrol", pellets of diethilstilbestrol at 0,015 g., in 12 weeks S. C. W. Leghorn cockerels, was studied. The results secured are in accordance with those obtained by other authors and can be resumed as follows: 1) paleness and shrunken of the comb, whose size is reduced, in comparison with the controls; 2) no differences in the total weight gain between control and treated lot; 3) size of testis greatly reduced in treated males; 4) improvement of meat by fat deposition in chickens that received treatment.

On a specimen of the rare fin whale, Balaenoptera Edeni Anderson, stranded on Pulu Sugi near Singapore Naturalis
Junge, G.C.A..
A Fin Whale was cast ashore on the coast of Pulu Sugi, one of the smaller islands of the Rhio Archipelago between Singapore and the Sumatran coast in July 1936. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. K. W. Dammerman, former Director of 's Lands Plantentuin at Buitenzorg, and the unvaluable help of the late Mr. F. N. Chasen, Director of the Raffles Museum, Singapore, the specimen was saved and after cleaning sent to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. It was received in June 1939. The length of the skeleton was slightly over 12 m and it must have belonged to an adult specimen, for in all vertebrae the epiphyses are coalesced completely with the rest of the vertebral body (Wheeler, 1930). It was clear that the specimen belonged to a Balaenoptera. It...

On fossil Mollusca from the island of Mandul, East-Borneo Naturalis
Beets, C..
This paper presents the results of the examination of a fairly big collection of mollusca from the island of Mandul, north of Tarakan, East-Borneo. The material was collected by Dr. Van Holst Pellekaan while investigating the geology of Mandul in the service of the “Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij” (Royal Dutch/Shell). It was sent to Prof. K. Martin of Leyden for closer examination, and afterwards was embodied into the collections of the Leyden Geological Museum. Prof. Martin recorded the results of his preliminary examination, which excluded the bivalves, in a report to the “Bataafsche”, dated 12th January 1917. He came to the conclusion that the fossils were of a Pliocene age.

On lower tertiary Mollusca from S.W. and Central Celebes Naturalis
Beets, C..
1) In the “Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie”, Leyden, there is a small collection of Lower Tertiary mollusca from S.W. Celebes which allows of comparison with Abendanon's Celebes fossils described by Dollfus and kept in the “Instituut voor Mijnbouwkunde”, Delft. The present note deals especially with Turritella krooni Dollfus (S.W. Central Celebes; said to be of Cretaceous age), a new subspecies T. krooni batukuënsis (S.W. Celebes; Eocene), and the new T. krooni kalosiensis, formerly described as T. cf. angulata Sowerby and T. cf. assimilis Sowerby (S.W. Central Celebes; probably of Upper Eocene age, formerly considered to be of Oligocene age).

On probably young miocene fossils from the coal concession Batoe Panggal, near Tenggarong (Samarinda), Eastern Borneo Naturalis
Beets, C..
In the collections of the Leyden Geological Museum is a set of fossiliferous clay-stones which was long ago collected by the mining engineer Hulshoff-Pol in the coal quarries of Batoe Panggal 1), Eastern Borneo. He presented the collection in 1902 to Dr M. Schmidt, who at that time was making geological investigations in Borneo. After Dr Schmidt’s appointment to a professorship in Stuttgart, the fossil collections made by him in Borneo were acquired by the Leyden Geological Museum (1920). Fig. 1 roughly indicates the locality of Batoe Panggal, while Fig. 2 depicts the delta area of the Mahakkam or Koetei river and its neighbouring areas. The dotted area is again represented in Fig. 3 below.

On some Balanids living in Corals, collected by the Snellius Expedition in 1930 Naturalis
Kolosváry, G..
Prof. H. Boschma, director of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, sent me some Balanids associated with Millepora platyphylla Hemprich & Ehrenberg, partly preserved in formalin, partly in a dry state. The material was collected by the Snellius Expedition in 1930, the data concerning the present material are (Boschma, 1936, p. 19): "April 23-27. Obi latoe, northwest of Obi major (22). Most of the collecting was done on the reef of the small island Poeloe Toesa at the east side of Obi latoe. This is a highly varied reef with a great number of species of corals. A peculiar phenomenon observed here was the occurrence of multitudes of small brown flatworms on colonies of Merulina and Montipora, which covered the greater part of the surface of these...

On some brackish Water Mollusca from the Lake of Maracaibo Naturalis
Broek, A.N.Ch. Ten.
INTRODUCTION The Lake of Maracaibo, situated in the northwestern part of the Venezuelan Republic, occupies the centre of a large topographical and structural depression between the Colombian Andes on the west and the northeast trending Venezuelan Andes on the south and east. It is a flask-shaped body of water, measuring about 200 kilometers from north to south and its width varies from about 100 kilometers in the south to less than 10 kilometers between the City of Maracaibo and the village of Altagracia. Though it has an open connection with the Caribbean sea through the Gulf of Venezuela, the water of the Lake is almost fresh on account of the many rivers emptying into it from the mountains to the south, west and east. North from Maracaibo, however,...

On two Appias species from Celebes and a note regarding Delias sthenobaea (Boisd.) (Rhopalcera, Pieridae) Naturalis
Toxopeus, L.J..
Part of the butterfly collection of Mr. P. Zondervan, who died in a Japanese camp, was saved from destruction during the Japanese occupation and the post-war troubles and finally came into my hands. The material is for the greater part still in an excellent condition and contains many interesting forms. The number of specimens is small, as it was Mr. Zondervan's habit to mount only one pair of any new species he collected. The bulk so remained in papers and these all got lost. Here follows an account of some interesting Pieridae. Appias (paulina) urania (Wall.) Tachyris urania, Wallace, "Eastern Pieridae", Trans. ent. Soc. 6 (3) 3 (1867), Tondano, mountains of N. Celebes (♂). Appias urania, Martin, D. ent. Zeits. Iris, 91, 1919. 1 ♂, Tondano, 17.7.1939, 1...

Palaeobotanical investigations in the vicinity of the sneeker meer (Province of Friesland, The Netherlands) Naturalis
Bodlaender, K.B.A..
This paper deals with the investigation of soil samples taken near Terhorne on the North-East shore of the “Sneeker Meer”, an expanse of water in the province of Friesland. (see fig. I) According to the geological map, the peat around this large body of water is covered by an 1—4 dm thick layer of young marine clay, but at the place where our samples were taken, the peat reaches the surface. A series of samples were collected from the whole depth of this peat-deposit (see diagram I). The surface lies here 0.35 m below the level of the sea. (As the sealevel is taken the N.A.P., the average height of the water level at Amsterdam.) At a depth of 2.15 or 2.20 m the borer reached the underlying sand. It proved impossible to penetrate with the borer used by us...

Pliocene Mollusca from a coral limestone of a hill near Sekoerau, E. Borneo Naturalis
Beets, C..
The present paper deals with a small collection of Neogene fossils which has been made by the geologist Dr. M. Schmidt in the Sangkoelirang area 1), East Borneo. The locality is defined in Gerth’s (1923) and Krijnen’s papers (1931, loc. no. 175, p. 535). It must be stated here that this locality has been mentioned incorrectly in literature, viz., as “Hill near Sekoerau” instead of “Coral limestone, Hill near Sekoerau”. Dr. Schmidt’s collection, which was sold to the Leyden Geological Museum in 1920 — about twenty years after being made — contains two different faunas from Sekoerau: vide infra.
