According previous studies about longevity in maize by ACCORSI e ADÂMOLI DE BARROS, (1961) the authors presents in this paper the results of work on longevity of seedlings of beans. Seeds were separated in three groups according their weight, as followings: small 80-120 mg; medium 130-140 mg and big 150-200 mg. The sowing of the seeds was made in pure sand and the seedlings were distributed in distil. water and in complete solution of Arnon and Hoagland. Each treatment was made in two replications with eight seedlings by treatment. At present time the following conclusions can be related: 1.°) - Eight days after germination, the cotiledones of all the seedlings started to fell down, fourteen days after, all cotiledones had fell down. 2.°) - Fifteen days... |

It is difficult to draw a general conclusion for a study so limited in space and in time. We have seen that the hydrological regime in the Gibraltar Strait is subject to rapid fluctuations and the overall nature of the exchange flow between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea can only be summarised after a large number of observations at permanent stations. In a certain manner, each chapter constitutes a separate study that progressively highlights new elements and that has its own conclusion. For this reason, we content ourselves with a review of the main points that were considered. After a brief historical account of the different oceanographic cruises in the Gibraltar Strait, we examined a vertical section and two horizontal sections of... |

The distribution of marine species according to climatic environmental conditions has been of interest to biologist for a long time. Biologists distinguish fauna from cold regions from fauna of temperate regions and have geographically classified them into provinces. In North Atlantic waters, from north to south, are recognised the following provinces: the Arctic Province that stretches from the North Pole to the Barents Sea; a Boreal province that covers the shelves of Scandinavia and the British Isles; the Atlantic-Mauritanian province (temperate) that includes the Lusitanian province and the Mauritanian province between which may be intercalated a rather distinct Mediterranean domain; finally, more to the south, a Guinean province (tropical) that... |

Cocoa seedlings were grown in nutrient solution in order to find out the effects of the levels of N, P, K in the substrate on growth, symptoms and chemical composition of the leaves. A 3x3x3 factorial design was used. The following conclusions can be drawn. 5.1. Among the three elements under study, only nitrogen had a positive, significant effect on growth as measured by height and dry weight. 5.2. The level of a given elements in the leaves did increase when its level in the nutrient solution was raised. On the other hand the N content was positively affected by the concentration of P in the substrate. 5.3. A decrease in the N/P and K/P rations in the leaves was observed when the nutrient solutions had, res-respectively, absence of K and N and high level... |

I. Introduction The present paper has been written for practical purposes in the first place. It intends to provide medical men in the field with some useful information on important mosquitoes. It is also meant to rouse some interest in those insects, that are of primary importance to public health. Three main categories will be dealt with : (a) Species known to be vectors of any human disease in the New Guinea territory; (b) Man-biting species without vector properties, merely annoying by their numbers (pest-mosquitoes) ; (c) Some species, not man-biting, but easily recognizable, wide-spread, and frequently present in mosquito collections. The present synopsis has no pretentions as to its complete originality. Bonne-Wepster & Brug (1937, 1939)... |

A preliminary systematic study of the genus Crataegus L. in the Netherlands resulted in the fact that at least 3 taxa can be distinguished, viz. the species C. monogyna Jacq. and C. oxyacantha L., and the hybrid C. calycina Peterm. X C. oxyacantha L. The hybrid was not yet known from this country; it is found in the NE part of Drente in hedges around wet pastures on a clay-formation deposited in the Riss-glacial period. |
