Numerical Simulation of Airflow in Livestock Buildings with Radial Inlet CIGR Journal
Bjarne Bjerg; Associate professor; Lars Soerensen.
The purpose of this work is to inquire the potentials of a simplified method of modelling radial inlets in numerical simulation of airflow in mechanically ventilated livestock rooms. This simplified method is based on simulation of an angle section of the entire air volume with starting point in the centre line of the inlet. Using symmetry planes as boundary condition on the sides of the angle section, and grids including only one cell in the width direction, it is possible to include three-dimensional geometry in simulations nearly equally uncomplicated as twodimensional simulations.Inside and close to the inlet the angle section method generates practically the same air velocities and pressure conditions as simulation of the entire room. At floor level...

Proposed Lifting Model for Gripper Date Palm Service Machines CIGR Journal
M. Keramat Jahromi; R. Mirasheh; A. Jafari.
Many of the cultural operations of date palm tree require the man to climb the tree and work at a considerable height above the ground. This is a dangerous and slow operation further compounded by a severe labor shortage. The objective of this study is to propose an innovative gripper service machine in order to climb the tree and do special operations at the top. Gripper date palm service machine is a machine which connects to the tree trunk and uses it as support. It causes to reduce size and weight of this machine in order to utilize in date palm gardens which has no special planting pattern and palm is cultivated with other trees. This work demonstrates how a gripper climber machine can be applied to service palm trees with the aim of reducing the...

Characteristics of Floors for Pig Pens: Friction, Shock Absorption, Ammonia Emission and Heat Conduction CIGR Journal
S. Pedersen; P. Ravn.
In respect to improving animal welfare and to minimize the ammonia emission from animal facili-ties, it is important to have appropriate information on the impact of the flooring system in pig pens. Twelve different floors, six commercially available and six experimental floors for pig pens, were investigated in respect to four different characteristics: friction coefficients, shock absorption, am-monia emission and heat conduction. The friction coefficients were measured as dynamic friction for dry floors and floors wetted with water and rapeseed oil and as static friction for dry floors. The floor elasticity was measured as shock absorption when letting a weight fall on the test floors. The ammonia emission was measured in a wind tunnel with ammonia...

Business Rationale for Investment on Power Operated Maize Sheller in Bangladesh CIGR Journal
Swapan K Roy; Mike Albu; Abdur Rob.
A study was carried out to investigate the investment of a selected agro-machinery power operated Maize Sheller in the course of mechanization of Bangladesh. The analysis considers different types of Maize Sheller, and inter-regional differences in agro-economic factors that influence the business rationale for investment. Maize Shellers are increasingly needed to serve demand from poultry sector because manual shelling is very laborious. Comparing with manual shelling, results indicate that power operated Maize Shellers look like a wise investment (5 – 8 acres for 25% internal rate of return or IRR). However, it makes economic sense to operate shellers at higher capacities, and along with the high capital cost (Tk1 18,000 – 22,000) to save large numbers...

A Table Mounted Device for Cracking Dika Nut (Irvingia gabonensis) CIGR Journal
B. S. Ogusina; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. A. Koya; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. O. Adeosun; Obafemi Awolowo University.
A simply designed machine for cracking dika nut was fabricated. The nut is fed by hand inbetween a toggle mechanism comprising of the slider and a fixed block. Fracture mechanism was based on the deformation characteristics of dried dika nut under uni-axial compression. When actuated, the slider compresses the nutshell to failure along its line of symmetry. The experimental machine gave 100% cracking efficiency but with 24% kernel breakage in cracking sun-dried dika nut at 6.6% moisture content (w.b). The machine provides a viable and effective technique for safe dika kernel extraction.

Vehicle Path Planning for Complete Field Coverage Using Genetic Algorithms CIGR Journal
A. E. F Ryerson; Q. Zhang.
In farming operations, one of the fundamental issues facing a farmer is the cost of running the farm. If the equipment the farmer is using can be made more efficient, the cost of farming will be reduced. One way of making agricultural equipment more efficient is to develop automated or autonomous functions for the equipment. One of the fundamental tasks for autonomous equipment is to plan the path for the equipment to travel. This paper reports the research on the feasibility of creating an automated method of path planning for autonomous agricultural equipment. Genetic algorithms were chosen to plan the paths with a primary goal of creating an optimal path guiding the equipment to completely cover a field while avoiding all known obstacles. Two example...

Path Planning Algorithms for Agricultural Machines CIGR Journal
T. Oksanen; A. Visala.
If the field plot shape is not rectangular and if it contains obstacles, the coverage path planning problem is hard to solve for a non-omnidirectional machine. Scientists have developed several algorithms to solve this coverage path planning problem, but all of them have pros and cons. If the machines were omnidirectional and turning times were decreased to insignificant, the problem would be quite easy to solve using known robotic path planning methods. Traditional agricultural machines, like tractors, tractor-trailer combinations, self-propelled harvesters and other man-driven machines are slow to turn at headlands. This is the most differentiating property of the problem formulation compared to traditional robotic coverage path planning, which has dealt...

A Review of Fixed Bed Gasification Systems for Biomass CIGR Journal
Sangeeta Chopra; Anil K Jain.
The gasification of biomass into useful fuel enhances its potential as a renewable energy resource. The fixed bed gasification systems are classified as updraft, Imbert downdraft, throatless downdraft, crossdraft and two stage gasifiers. Updraft gasifiers are suitable for gasification of biomass containing high ash (up to 15 %) and high moisture content (up to 50 %) and generate producer gas having high tar content (50–100 g/Nm3). The high temperature (830 oC) air gasification of biomass in updraft gasifiers increase the lower calorific value of producer gas and reduce the tar content. The updraft gasifiers have been used for gasification of bark, wood blocks, chips and pellets, straw, maize cobs, refuse derived fuel (RDF), and waste pellets with air and...

Preface to Special Section “ATOE 2006” of CIGR Ejournal Vol. IX CIGR Journal
H. Auernhammer; M. Ehrl.
After Chicago 2002 (Zhang, 2002) and Kyoto 2004 (Zhang et al., 2004), the third conference on “Automation Technology for Off-Road Equipment” (ATOE) was held 2006 in Bonn. According to the custom, again it was a pre-conference of a large CIGR event, the CIGR World Congress 2006. This allowed a reduction of expenditures for all participants, and also placed appropriate emphasis on automation in the off-road area as it is seen as a major topic for land use and agricultural technology today and in future. More than 110 participants from 13 different countries clearly showed the importance of the young ATOE conference. A total of 49 papers were reviewed by the scientific review committee and were consistently of high quality. All papers were published in the...

Data Points and Duration for Estimating Fuel Consumption of a Diesel Engine CIGR Journal
Dennis G. Watson; Tony V. Harrison; Richard W. Steffen.
Accurate measurement of fuel consumption is required to quantify the efficiency of an engine orpredict emissions. As part of a larger project, accurate instantaneous fuel consumption data was required for a John Deere 4045T diesel engine. While establishing test criteria, it became evident that literature did not provide clear recommendations on the number of data points or time duration for data collection, for a diesel engine. Fuel consumption tests were conducted using up to 15 data points of percent fuel rate and up to 15 min of data collection. ased on statistical analysis of test results, at least 2 data points (0% and 100% of fuel rate) and 2 min of data collection are recommended for similar fuel-injected, diesel engine fuel rate tests. When a...
