A new classification of Chelicerata Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
Progress in classification of Chelicerata has been thwarted especially by two factors, viz., the concept of mites as one monophyletic group, and the opinion that this group consists of species with a highly modified plan of construction and without any trace of true segmentation. The only characters which are generally shared by all groups of mites refer to the presence of a gnathosoma (i.e. the cone-shaped, movable structure comprizing the mouthparts), and the occurrence of a larva with only three pairs of legs (the last-mentioned character is also found in Ricinulei). A comparative morphological study of the gnathosoma (Van der Hammen, 1970b, 1972) has, however, demonstrated that two fundamentally different types can be distinguished, which must be the...

A new genus and a new species of the Carventinae from Surinam (Hemiptera, Aradidae) Naturalis
Kormilev, N.A.; Doesburg, P.H. van.
The junior author has collected in Surinam at night on a dead log, a few specimens of a very interesting new aradid species representing a new genus in the subfamily Carventinae, which we propose to name Apterocoris surinamensis. All measurements were taken with a micrometer eyepiece, 25 units = 1 mm. Apterocoris Kormilev et Van Doesburg, new genus Ovate, more tapering anteriorly; first three antennal segments, femora, tibiae and lateral borders of the body, with erect, stiff bristles; entire body, with exception of apical half of antennal segment IV, labium and tarsi, covered with red brown incrustation. Apterous. Head longer than width across eyes; anterior process deeply cleft anteriorly, not reaching basal 1/4 of antennal segment I. Antenniferous...

A new record for the anchialine shrimp Ligur uveae (Borradaile, 1899) (Decapoda, Hippolytidae) in the Philippines with notes on its morphology, behaviour and ecology Naturalis
Wear, R.G.; Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION Ligur uveae is generally considered an anchialine species (found in land-locked, generally supralittoral saltwater pools) with the type locality given simply as "Uvea, Loyalty Islands" by Borradaile (1899). The species is widely distributed geographically, although locally evidently confined to a very restricted habitat. Its known range extends from the western Indian Ocean to Polynesia: Aldabra, western Indian Ocean (Borradaile, 1917; Gordon, 1936); Halmahera, northern Moluccas, Indonesia (Holthuis, 1947; 1963); Uvea, Loyalty Islands (Borradaile, 1899; Gordon, 1936); Sayawa Islet near Uvea (Monod, 1968); Vatulele Island, Fiji Archipelago (Gordon, 1936; Derrick, 1957; Marden, 1958; Reed & Hames, 1967); Vanua Vatu and Vanua Levu Islands,...

A new species of Marasmiellus from the Netherlands Naturalis
Noordeloos, M.E..
Until recently the mycoflora of the West Frisian Islands has been rather neglected. In the last few years, however, members of both the Rijksherbarium and the Netherlands’ Mycological Society (N.M.V.) have been collecting more frequently on these islands. The results of their fieldtrips are promising for the future as many interesting and rare fungi have been found. In a previous paper (Noordeloos, 1975) I described a rare species of the genus Marasmiellus Murr., viz. M. caespitosus (Pat.) Sing. from the Island of Texel¹. I now want to introduce, from the same island, another member of the same genus.

A new species of Thaumamannia from Surinam (Heteroptera, Tingidae, Vianaidinae) Naturalis
Doesburg, P.H. van.
During soil fauna investigations performed in 1959 by Dr. J. van der Drift (see his study, 1963), three specimens were collected of a small coleopteroid heteropteron, representing a new species belonging to the genus Thaumamannia Drake & Davis, 1960. Up till now, only one other species in this genus was known, viz., T. manni, collected in an ants' nest by Mr. W. H. Mann in Bolivia. The other three known species in the subfamily Vianaidinae1) belong to the genus Anommatocoris China, 1945, and are also found with ants (Drake & Ruhoff, 1965). The new species described here is closely related to the Bolivian species, and in all likelihood is also myrmecophilous. It is the first record of a vianaidine tingid for Surinam and for the Guyana's. The...

A new subspecies of Ceroplophana modiglianii Gestro (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) from Malaysia Naturalis
Kuijten, P.J..
In 1893, Gestro founded the genus Ceroplophana, only including the simultaneously described species C. modiglianii Gestro. He considered the genus — based on the only known specimen — closely related to Peperonota Westwood, Didrepanephorus Wood-Mason, and Dicaulocephalus Gestro. For rutelines, the males in these genera have strikingly developed secondary sexual characters. Gestro's species was the first representative from an insular locality of this South-East Asian group (Si Rambé, Batakland, North Sumatra; this locality is mentioned on the map in the report of the explorer who collected the material, Modigliani, 1891). Recently I could study seven ♂ of modiglianii from West Malaysia. They show striking differences from Gestro's description. Gestro's...

A new tool for induced spawning : the use of 17alpha-hydroxy-20beta-dihydroprogesterone to spawn carp at low temperature Animal Physiology
Jalabert, B.; Breton, B.; Brzuska, E.; Fostier, A.; Wieniawski, J..
The efficiency of different hormonal treatments to induce ovulation of carp at low temperatures (13-15°C) was tested. "Priming" with a low dose (0.6 mg/kg) of carp pituitary extract was found necessary for a subsequent successful treatment with 17alpha-hydroxy-20beta-dihydroprogesterone (17alpha-20beta P) (2 mg/kg) 1 day later. The eggs produced by this method showed satisfactory fertilization (75-96%) and hatching success (70%). On the other hand, normal hypophysation (5.4 mg/kg) following priming resulted only in partial ovulation and oocyte resorption at this temperature. Priming was shown to increase the gonadotropin level in plasma from about 2 to 35 ng/ml and to induce germinal vesicle migration toward the periphery of oocytes. Neither...

A NOTE ON OFF-FARM INCOME OF FARM FAMILIES IN AUSTRALIA AgEcon
Tubman, Wendy.
Past studies of the farm sector have concentrated on the use of farm based resources in the farm context alone. Changes in the economic environment have widened the opportunities available to these resources and have thus tended to make this narrow definition of the farm firm less relevant. Some recognition of this situation has emerged in more recent studies. The aim of this note is to collate and examine the degree to which farm labour resources are employed in off-farm activities in Australia. The main conclusion drawn from the evidence available is that, while in aggregate part-time farming is a fairly minor activity, in some sectors it is increasing in importance and constitutes a considerable outlet for farm based labour resources.

Spectral analysis is used to test hypotheses relating to regular four-year cycles in the Australian pig industry. The data point to the existence of annual cycles in production, slaughterings and prices, but four-year cycles are only evident in pig prices. Relationships between these series are also examined by cross-spectral analysis

A PERSONAL VIEW OF THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE DOMINICAN FOOD AND FIBER SYSTEM AgEcon
Diaz, Joaquin A..
The Dominican government is currently undertaking many programs in the food and fiber sector which are expected to improve agricultural sector performance which in turn is important for the development of the whole economy. Thus, it is important to identify the general strengths and weaknesses of the system "as is" in order to carefully select subsequent specific studies about the Dominican food and fiber system. Although this study is general, it is nonetheless valuable since it contributes to a basic and introductory understanding of the Dominican case. The main objective of this study is to describe the general role that the government might play in the Dominican food and fiber sector in order to obtain more efficiency and equity among the systems'...
