| Agnathobathynella ecclesi gen. n., sp. n. is described from interstitial waters of a stream in Malawi (Africa). There are several unique features characterizing the new genus: mandibles without cutting part, paragnaths extremely elongated, teeth and setae of the maxillula and also the maxilla specialized in various ways, 8th male thoracopod without penis, thoracopods 1 to 7 with 3-segmented endopodites and very reduced setation. Probable relationships between the new genus and Nannobathynella as well as the Gallobathynellinae are discussed. The opinion that morphological diversification is relatively poor in the Bathynellidae is re-examined in the light of recent knowledge and is shown to be invalid. |

| Membership in the European Community (EC) for Greece, Spain, and Portugal may reduce trade between the United States and the EC in selected commodities; prospects for a North American Common Market are not bright; and the diversion of agricultural crops from export to fuel alcohol production would very likely increase, rather than reduce, balance-of-payment deficits for the United States and Brazil. The first meeting of the Consortium on Trade Research, established by the Economics and Statistics Service's International Economics Division and several universities, focused on and continues to analyze these and other global topics. |

| Since turbulence is an important factor for the growth of microscopic algae, the effect of mixing intensity and mixing time, has been assessed by means of air-lift pumps as an alternative technology for the agitation of algal cultures. Batch culture experiments in enriched sea water were carried out indoors with <i>Chlorella</i> in 100 liter tanks and outdoors with natural phytoplankton populations in 70 m³ tanks. The respective culturing depths in these tanks were 25 and 180 cm. The role of the mixing was also evaluated against that of the pH regulation of the cultures.
