| Markov chain analysis of changes in the number and size of cotton gin firms in West Texas was conducted assuming stationary and non-stationary transition probabilities. Projections of industry structure were made to 1999 with stationary probability assumptions and six sets of assumed conditions for labor and energy costs and technological change in the non-stationary transition model. Results indicate a continued decline in number of firms, but labor, energy, and technology conditions alter the configuration of the structural changes. |

| Rotations have historically been used to alleviate pest problems in crop production. This paper considers methods of modeling rotations in linear programming models for Southeastern vegetable production. In such models, entering each possible crop rotation as a separate activity can be burdensome because of the large numbers of possible rotational alternatives. Conventional methodology for double crop rotations reduces the number of activities but must be adapted to accommodate triple crop rotational requirements in vegetable production. | This paper examines three claims of inefficient allocation of public expenditure in publicly funded agricultural research in the United States. It has been argued by analysts of research policy that: 1. The overall level of public investment in agricultural research is less than what would be socially optimal. 2. The present composition of public research investment is excessively myopic in that too little basic research is performed relative to the level of applied research. 3. | This paper presents a model of the farm management process. The model suggests that certain socioeconomic characteristics of farm managers will influence their decision-making process. Several characteristics are hypothesized an tested using multivariate techniques (multivariate analysis of variance, range tests, and multiple comparisons). The analysis indicates that the soil zone, value of machinery inventory, operator's age, and operator's education influence the importance placed on each of 20 factors. | Diacyclops bicuspidatus lucanus n.ssp. is described from the phreatic freshwater network of Lucania (South Italy). Among the members of the “bicuspidatus” complex, the new subspecies is closely related to D. bicuspidatus odessanus (Schmankevitch, 1875) by the structure and the armature of the antennula of the female. From this subspecies, as well as from the others in the same group, D. bicuspidatus lucanus n.ssp. differs mainly by the remarkably elongated caudal rami and the unusual length ratio between innermost and outermost furcal setae. |

| Bahadzia, new genus, and two new species of amphipod crustaceans are described from anchialine caves in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. One of the species is recorded from three caves on Grand Bahama Island and one cave on Great Abaco Island, whereas the other species is recorded from two caves on the island of Providenciales. The new genus is apparently more closely related to Metaniphargus and Saliweckelia than other hadziid genera in the peri-Caribbean region, but it also shares some important characters with Mayaweckelia. |

| The genus Andinophryne, characterized by the presence of an omosternum, an externally visible tympanum, elongate parotoids and extensively webbed hands and feet is described from the Pacific versant of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. Two new species, Andinophryne colomai and A. olallai are described from Ecuador. The recently described Bufo atelopoides Lynch & Ruiz-Carranza is transferred to the new genus. Some comparisons with other atelopodid Bufonidae (Atelopus, Dendrophryniscus, Melanophryniscus, Oreophrynella, Osornophryne, Rhamphophryne) are made and some very tentative remarks on their relationships are ventilated. |
