The Asian species of Euaspis are reviewed. Euaspis carbonaria of authors is shown to be composite: a lectotype is designated and the species with which carbonaria has long been confused is described as Euaspis edentata spec. nov. Euaspis lorenzae spec. nov. is described from the Philippines and E. wegneri spec. nov. from Bacan (Moluccas). Two species described by Pasteels from 'Arabia' are shown to be of Bornean origin. Euaspis bakeri (Viereck, 1924) is synonymized with E. strandi Meyer, 1922, for which a lectotype is designated (the type locality Sikhim given by Meyer for this taxon is apparently false), and E. impressa (Viereck, 1924) with E. polynesia Vachal, 1903. |

This review examines the psychological literature on risk perception in terms of van Ravenswaay's proposal of a broad-based definition of risk perception that includes the three concepts of chance, harm, and context. The review further investigates the manner in which psychological researchers attempt to measure risk perception. It is suggested that the majority of psychological research on risk perception does not address van Ravenswaay's concepts in a comprehensive manner. This review of the psychological literature reveals that elements of van Ravenswaay's concepts are often employed as variables by psychological researchers, although not in a fashion similar to that suggested by van Ravenswaay. It is proposed that van Ravenswaay's definition of... |

Particle size fractionation is becoming commonly used for studying soil organic matter (OM). However, isolation of clay and silt represents a long and thus tedious step in the fractionation procedure. We propose an approach identical to the one utilized in particle size analysis with an estimation of the recoveries from aliquots ("aliquot" method) of the 0-2 and 0-20 micrometer fractions and no entire isolation ("decanting" method) of clay and silt. In comparison with the "decanting" method, the fraction and carbon (C) recoveries obtained by the "aliquot" method were satisfactory, but those of nitrogen (N) being hardly interpretable because of an insufficient accuracy of the determination method. The recommended method saves time and laboratory space and... |

A standard experimental diet was developed to study lipid nutrition in marine fish larvae during weaning and first ongrowing. Basal diets were prepared by extrusion-cooking, crumbling of the pellets, and sieving to obtain particles in the size ranges 150-300 µm and 300-500 µm. Three protein sources in the extruded basal diet were evaluated: (1) micronized cod protein granulate (COD); (2) a mixture of casein, gelatin, and albumin (CGA); (3) a mixture of cod fish meal, whey protein, soybean protein concentrate, albumin, hemoglobin meal, and wheat gluten (MIX). A variable lipid fraction was added to the extruded nucleus by coating the particles with an emulsion, coconut oil (COCO), or fish oil emulsion (FO), in a fluidized bed granulator. European sea bass... |

The following three species are redescribed: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sminthurus nigromaculatus Tullberg, 1871, and Sminthurus multipunctatus Schäffer, 1896. Four new species are described from France and Spain: Sminthurus bourgeoisi n. sp., Sminthurus bozoulensis n. sp., Sminthurus leucomelanus n.sp.,and Sminthurus hispanicus n. sp. The importance of the ontogeny of chaetotaxy is stressed. Indeed, not all species acquire the secondary chaetotaxy in the same instar, and for these characters the most informative instar is not the adult but the third juvenile instar. The study of such characters involves the clustering of similar characters. A short discussion is given about this issue (selection of characters and clustering criteria). |

Recent studies have shown that agricultural research can have high payoffs in Africa, but impact depends on how well technology fits with evolving needs and capacity in the agricultural sector and the rest of the economy. Structural adjustment policies (e.g., market liberalization, currency devaluation) and political change are transforming user demands for new technology and the economic environment in which technology must perform. The challenge is how to design agricultural research as a strategic input to promote broad-based economic growth, structural transformation, and food security in the increasingly market-driven, but fragile, economies of Africa. |

This paper is the first of a two-part survey on noncooperative game theory relevant to agricultural markets. Part 1 discusses types of noncooperative games and reviews important developments in noncooperative game theory solution concepts, including Nash equilibrium, subgame perfect equilibrium, and perfect Bayesian equilibrium. Strengths and weaknesses of game theory as a modelling tool are also assessed. Part 2 of the survey will discuss specific applications to agricultural markets. |
