A Continental Method for Estimating the Supply and Import/ Export of Wheat AgEcon
Kubo, Masayoshi; Xie, Jingci.
Wheat is the principal food of about half of the world’s population. In the 21st century, a steep increase in the global population is expected, mostly in Asia and Africa. While there is a saturation of food in developed countries, many developing countries suffer from a food shortage. We examine the production and supply of wheat by continent, focusing mainly on wheat shortages in Asia and Africa. We also drew conclusions about wheat distribution.

A Continuous Multi-dimensional Measure of Rurality: Moving Beyond Threshold Measures AgEcon
Waldorf, Brigitte S..
This paper introduces the Index of Relative Rurality, a continuous measure of rurality. The index is based on four dimensions: population size, density, percentage of urban residents, and distance to the closest metropolitan area. The index varies from 0 (most urban) to 1 (most rural). Compared to existing means of measuring rurality, the index is continuous and thus does not suffer from problems that arise when using arbitrary thresholds to separate discrete categories. This shift away from often ill-defined categories of rural and urban, to measuring the degree of rurality will shed new light on a wide array of rural issues ranging from rural poverty to economic growth. This paper shows that the Index of Relative Rurality makes an invaluable...

A Continuum of Consumer Attitudes Toward Genetically Modified Foods in the United States AgEcon
Ganiere, Pierre; Chern, Wen S.; Hahn, David E..
A national telephone survey was conducted in the United States in April 2002 to study the consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods. Attitudes toward GM foods were examined through the use of a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), analyzing the interrelationships among many categorical variables. This method was combined with a cluster analysis to construct a typology of consumers' attitudes. Four distinct classes of attitudes were finally extracted, denoted as: Proponents, Non-Opponents, Moderate Opponents, and Extreme Opponents. It was estimated that only 35% of the surveyed population was opposed to GM foods.

A cooperative action of endothelin-1 with prostaglandin F-2 alpha on luteal function in the cow OAK
Shirasuna, Koumei; Watanabe, S.; Oki, N.; Wijayagunawardane, M. P. B.; Matsui, Motozumi; Ohtani, M.; Miyamoto, Akio; 白砂, 孔明; 松井, 基純; 宮本, 明夫.
Prostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGF(2 alpha)) is the primary luteolysin in the cow, and luteal endothelin-1 (ET-1) interacts with PGF(2 alpha) during the process of luteolysis. In contrast, a developing corpus luteum (CL) is refractory to exogenous administration of PGF(2 alpha). Thus, the present study was aimed to investigate the functional relationship between ET-1 and PGF(2 alpha) in the mid-CL (PGF(2 alpha)-sensitive) and early-CL (PGF(2 alpha)-refractory). In the mid-CL model, cows (n = 6/treatment) were assigned to receive one of five types of treatments on day 10 of the estrous cycle: (1) an injection of saline; control, (2) a 500 jig of PGF2. analogue (sufficient dose to induce luteolytis); full-PG, (3) an intraluteal injection of 0.25 mg ET-1; ET-1, (4)...

A COORDENAÇÃO SIMULTÂNEA DE DIFERENTES CANAIS COMO ESTRATÉGIA DE DISTRIBUIÇÃO ADOTADA POR EMPRESAS DA AVICULTURA DE POSTURA AgEcon
Mizumoto, Fabio Matuoka; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
This study investigates the reasons which lead the companies to keep simultaneous vertical integrated, third part and hybrid distribution channels. Companies establish different coordination structures, the organizational arrangements, which determine how the agents involved cooperate to the development of distribution activities, according to Transaction Cost Economics and Dynamic Competence. Even choosing different distribution channels, why the company does not establish one single organizational arrangement? What factors may justify the establishment of different arrangements? Possible explanations to those questions have been pointed out in multiple distribution channels. The empirical research indicates that firms establish multiple efficient...

A Cost Approach to Economic Analysis under Production Uncertainty AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul.
This paper explores the economics of input decision by a firm facing production uncertainty. It relies on a state-contingent approach to production uncertainty. First, the paper develops a methodology to specify and estimate cost-minimizing input decisions under a state-contingent technology. Second, the analysis is applied to time series data on US agriculture. It finds strong empirical evidence that, in the analysis of input choices, expected output alone does not provide an appropriate representation of production uncertainty. The results provide empirical support for an output-cubical technology. This indicates that an ex post analysis of stochastic technology (as commonly found in previous research) appears appropriate. The analysis also provides...

A cost-effective melting temperature assay for the detection of single-nucleotide polymorphism in the MBL2 gene of HIV-1-infected children BJMBR
Arraes,L.C.; de Souza,P.R.; Bruneska,D.; Castelo Filho,A.; de Souza Cavada,B.; de Lima Filho,J.L.; Crovella,S..
We report a fast (less than 3 h) and cost-effective melting temperature assay method for the detection of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the MBL2 gene. The protocol, which is based on the Corbett Rotor Gene real time PCR platform and SYBR Green I chemistry, yielded, in the cohorts studied, sensitive (100%) and specific (100%) PCR amplification without the use of costly fluorophore-labeled probes or post-PCR manipulation. At the end of the PCR, the dissociation protocol included a slow heating from 60º to 95ºC in 0.2ºC steps, with an 8-s interval between steps. Melting curve profiles were obtained using the dissociation software of the Rotor Gene-3000 apparatus. Samples were analyzed in duplicate and in different PCR runs to test the reproducibility of...

A Cost-Effectiveness Study of Animal Disease Eradication Strategies: Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Ireland AgEcon
Dillon, Emma J..
The primary focus of this poster paper is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative control strategies for a number of simulated outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in four agriculturally diverse Irish regions, examining for the first time, the potential role of emergency vaccination in the country. With the increasing threat of transboundary animal diseases due to globalisation, wider market integration and increased animal movement it is important that such an evaluation of control and eradication strategies be undertaken and contingency plans be put in place. The new EU Directive (2003/85/EC) on FMD control permits the use of emergency vaccination as part of an FMD control strategy. The slaughter of infected animals and "dangerous...

A Critical Account of the Relationship between Institutional Trust, Risk Perception, and Technology Acceptance with an Application to Genetically Modified Foods AgEcon
Boecker, Andreas; Nocella, Giuseppe.
This article critically reflects on the widely held view of a causal chain with trust in public authorities impacting technology acceptance via perceived risk. It first puts forward conceptual reason against this view, as the presence of risk is a precondition for trust playing a role in decision making. Second, results from consumer surveys in Italy and Germany are presented that support the associationist model as counter hypothesis. In that view, trust and risk judgments are driven by and thus simply indicators of higher order attitudes toward a certain technology which determine acceptance instead. The implications of these findings are discussed.

A critical evaluation of the effect of population size and phenotypic measurement on QTL detection and localization using a large F2 murine mapping population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Li,Xinmin; Quigg,Richard J; Zhou,Jian; Xu,Shizhong; Masinde,Godfred; Mohan,Subburaman; Baylink,David J..
Population size and phenotypic measurement are two key factors determining the detection power of quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping. We evaluated how these two controllable factors quantitatively affect the detection of QTL and their localization using a large F2 murine mapping population and found that three main points emerged from this study. One finding was that the sensitivity of QTL detection significantly decreased as the population size decreased. The decrease in the percentage logarithm of the odd score (LOD score, which is a statistical measure of the likelihood of two loci being lied near each other on a chromosome) can be estimated using the formula 1 - n/N, where n is the smaller and N the larger population size. This empirical formula has...

A cross-cultural study of cereal foods' quality perception AgEcon
Krutulyte, Rasa; Costa, Ana I.; Grunert, Klaus G..
Cereal foods' production and use show substantial heterogeneity across Europe. For a category central in most EU diets, cereal foods' quality perception is, nevertheless, surprisingly understudied. With this in mind, 357 Danish, Lithuanian and Portuguese citizens were inquired about the importance of several cues and dimensions in their evaluation of the perceived quality of bread, cookies, breakfast cereals, pasta and vodka. Portuguese and Lithuanians consistently gave a significantly higher average importance to all the cues and quality dimensions considered, for all products, than their Danish counterparts. Nevertheless, respondents in all three samples found expected quality dimensions to be much more important than both extrinsic and intrinsic cues...
