A Farm-level Approach to the Methyl Bromide Phase-out: Identifying Alternatives and Maximizing Net Worth Using Stochastic Dominance and Optimization Procedures. AgEcon
Byrd, Mark M.; Escalante, Cesar L.; Wetzstein, Michael E.; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg.
Alternative fumigant and herbicide systems for Georgia's pepper farms are analyzed relative to soon-to-be phased-out methyl bromide system. Stochastic dominance analyses identify two alternatives exceeding MeBr's yield and financial efficiency. A programming model using simulation-optimization techniques provides important implications on the pepper farms' economic viability under these alternative systems.

A first-generation microsatellite-based integrated genetic and cytogenetic map for the European rabbit (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) and localization of angora and albino Inra
Chantry-Darmon, C.; Urien, C.; De Rochambeau, H.; Allain, D.; Pena-Arnaud, B.; Hayes, H.; Grohs, C.; Cribiu, E.; Deretz, S.; Larzul, C.; Save, J.C.; Neau, A.; Chardon, P.; Rogel-Gaillard, C..
Summary : Although the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is used both in agronomics and in research, genomic resources for this species are still limited and no microsatellite-based genetic map has been reported. Our aim was to construct a rabbit genetic map with cytogenetically mapped microsatellites so as to build an integrated genetic and cytogenetic map. A reference population of 187 rabbits comprising eight three-generation families with 10–25 offspring per family was produced. One hundred and ninety-four of 305 previouslyidentified microsatellites were included in this study. Of these, 158 were polymorphic with two to seven alleles. The map reported here comprises 111 markers, including 104 INRA microsatellites, five microsatellites from...

A fleet of multiparameter observatories for geophysical and environmental monitoring at seafloor ArchiMer
Favali, P; Beranzoli, L; D'Anna, G; Gasparoni, F; Marvaldi, Jean; Clauss, G; Gerber, H; Nicot,; Marani, M; Gamberi, F; Millot, C; Finch, E.
Seafloor long-term, multiparameter, single-frame observatories have been developed within the framework of European Commission and Italian projects since 1995. A fleet of five seafloor observatories, built-up starting from 1995 within the framework of an effective synergy among research institutes and industries, have carried out a series of long-term sea experiments. The observatories are able to operate from shallow waters to deep-sea, down to 4000 m w.d., and to simultaneously monitor a broad spectrum of geophysical and environmental processes, including seismicity, geomagnetic field variations, water temperature, pressure, salinity, chemistry, currents, and gas occurrence. Moreover, they can transmit data in (near)-real-time that can be integrated with...

A flow cytometric approach to study intracellular-free Ca2+ in Crassostrea gigas haemocytes ArchiMer
Aton, Emilie; Renault, Tristan; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Thomas Guyon, Hélène; Cognard, C; Imbert, N.
Bivalve haemocytes are essential in defence mechanisms including phagocytosis. They also produce molecules including hydrolytic enzymes and antimicrobial peptides that contribute to pathogen destruction. Although haemocyte activities have been extensively studied, relatively little is known about the intracellular signalling pathways that are evoked during haemocyte activation and especially the role of calcium. Flow cytometry has been used for the first time to define the effect of cell incubation in haemolymph and artificial sea water (ASW) on Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, haemocytes. Cell viability, enzymatic activities (esterases and amino peptidases), phagocytosis and granulocyte percentage were analysed. Viability and some activities were...

A four-year comparison of two organic dairy systems Organic Eprints
Weller, Mr Richard.
Two organic systems were studied, the first based on self-sufficiency (SS) and the feeding of high-forage diets, and the second on purchased concentrates (PC) and maximising milk output. The growing of both concentrate and forage feeds in the SS system reduced the stocking density. Feeding high-forage diets increased the proportion of milk produced from forage but decreased the energy concentration of the ration, leading to lower milk persistency, reduced milk protein in early lactation and reduced pregnancy rates. In the PC system importing feed increased the stocking density but also increased the ‘farm-gate’ nutrient surpluses.

A Framework for Estimating U.S. WTO Domestic Support to 2015 AgEcon
Quiroga, Jose.
The framework allows comprehensive and consistent measurement and classification of U.S. domestic support to 2015 under different assumptions. Projections of future U.S. domestic support patterns are made with estimates published in the USDA Agricultural Baseline Projections. We also use information from the OECD, FAPRI, NASS, and our own estimates. We present key elements and an overview of our analytical framework, assumptions of a baseline scenario, and some analytical results and observations arising from our analysis. The baseline scenario extends the classification of programs in WTO notifications to 2015. The framework consists of 65 spreadsheets, which are grouped into 4 analytical stages: calculation of program estimates by commodity; calculation...

A Framework for Evaluating Return on Investment in Management Development Programs AgEcon
Lynch, Kara; Akridge, Jay T.; Schaffer, Scott P.; Gray, Allan W..
Return on Investment (ROI) is a financial metric that can be used to evaluate training and development investments. The objective of this research is to develop an evaluation process using ROI to assess the financial performance of management development programs. A three-phase model for ROI evaluation is presented. These phases include assessment planning, data collection, and data analysis. This model is then tested and applied to a management development program. This paper provides a template for ROI evaluation that can be used to evaluate a wide variety of training and development activities by food and agribusiness firms.

A Framework for Spatial Risk Assessments: Potential Impacts of Nonindigenous Invasive Species on Native Species Ecology and Society
Allen, Craig R; USGS Nebraska Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, University of Nebraska; allencr@unl.edu; Johnson, Alan R; Clemson University; alanj@clemson.edu; Parris, Leslie; Clemson University; leslie.parris@us.army.mil.
Many populations of wild animals and plants are declining and face increasing threats from habitat fragmentation and loss as well as exposure to stressors ranging from toxicants to diseases to invasive nonindigenous species. We describe and demonstrate a spatially explicit ecological risk assessment that allows for the incorporation of a broad array of information that may influence the distribution of an invasive species, toxicants, or other stressors, and the incorporation of landscape variables that may influence the spread of a species or substances. The first step in our analyses is to develop species models and quantify spatial overlap between stressor and target organisms. Risk is assessed as the product of spatial overlap and a hazard index based...

A frequency lock-in mechanism in the interaction between wind and crop canopies Inra
Py, C.; de Langre, E.; Moulia, B..
The interaction between wind dynamics and the waving of crop canopies is explored. On-site experiments with wheat and alfalfa fields have allowed us to quantify the motion of a large set of plants subject to wind, using an image-correlation technique. The coherent part of the waving motion is extracted by a bi-orthogonal decomposition of the spatio-temporal velocity field of the crop surface. It is shown that the corresponding space and time features cannot be explained using predictions from the mixing-layer analogy of wind above canopies, which is the most common model for perturbations in this environment. We show that the plant bending stiffness plays an important role in the frequency and wavelength selection for the coherent motion of the canopy. A...

A further step into the ELGH and TLGH for Spain and Italy AgEcon
Cortes-Jimenez, Isabel; Pulina, Manuela.
Nowadays many developing countries focus on economic policies for promoting international tourism and exports expansion as a potential source of economic growth of the country. However, the understanding of the relationship between exports and economic growth is still ongoing. When treating the relationship between tourism and economic growth, considering tourism as a non-traditional export few studies have been published to date. This paper has the objective to assess if exports and tourism have really promoted growth by means of the export-led growth hypothesis (ELGH) and the tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLGH). The cases under analysis are Spain and Italy, two of the most important countries worldwide regarding the expansion of tourism. Cointegration...

A Future for the Dead Sea Basin: Water Culture among Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians AgEcon
Lipchin, Clive.
The Dead Sea basin plays a major role for regional economic development (industry, tourism and agriculture) in the Middle East. This potential is threatened by the steady disappearance of the Dead Sea. Since around 1930 the water level of the Dead Sea has fallen by about 25 m, about half of this alone in the last 20 years. The Dead Sea is a transboundary resource shared by Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. The Dead Sea is the terminal point of the Jordan River watershed and as such, it serves as a barometer for the health of the overall system. Its rapid decline reflects the present water management strategies of the riparian and upstream countries. This includes the different water cultures of the three countries. Throughout history, the Dead...

A Fuzzy Logic Controller for Autonomous Wheeled Vehicles InTech
Mohamed B. Trabia; Linda Z. Shi; Neil E. Hodge.
This chapter presents a fuzzy logic control system for steering a two-axle vehicle. Two controllers are presented individually: the steering controller and the velocity controller. Each fuzzy controller is divided into several modules to represent the distributed way in which humans deal with different driving tasks. All of these modules are of the Mamdanitype and use sigmoid or product of sigmoid membership functions. The outputs of the various modules are added together to control the steering angle and the speed of the vehicle, respectively. Two fuzzy modules in the steering controller are designed to meet the basic driving requirement: Target Steering Fuzzy module and Collision Avoidance Steering Fuzzy module. The first module steers the vehicle toward...
