In this study the authors aimed to compare the efficiency of carprofen, ketoprofen and vedaprofen for alleviating postoperative pain in bitches submitted to ovariohysterectomy (OH). Pre- and postoperative assessment of pain was made using serum levels of cortisol and glucose, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the University of Melbourne pain scale (UMPS) in twenty-one bitches undergoing OH. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of three groups: vedaprofen at 0.5mg kg-1, carprofen at 2.2mg kg-1 or ketoprofen at 2.2mg kg-1. All analgesics were given orally 2 hour before surgery. Assessments were made before surgery and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 and 24 hours post-extubation. No dog of this study required additional doses of analgesics. There were no... |

Standard texts dutifully list 16 essential elements for plant growth, yet the literature indicates that the boundary between essential and nonessential nutrients for plants is not always clear. When animals and 'lower' organisms are considered, the team of 16 is considerably expanded and the notion of essentiality is blurred. Why are some elements more important than others to plants and to organisms in general? Here I propose three criteria by which elements might have been selected in the development of organisms: low atomic weight, at least modest abundance, and ease of assembly into complex structures. Assembly of the structural elements C, N, S, P, and O is based on valency and ionic potential. The selection of monovalent elements... |

Natural selection is often regarded as a result of severe competition. Defect seems beneficial for a single individual in many cases. However, cooperation is observed in many levels of biological systems ranging from single cells to animals, including human society. We have yet known that in unstructured populations, evolution favors defectors over cooperators. On the other hand, there have been much interest on evolutionary games^1,2^ on structured population and on graphs^3-16^. Structures of biological systems and societies of animals can be taken as networks. They discover that network structures determine results of the games. Together with the recent interest of complex networks^17,18^, many researchers investigate real network structures. Recently... |

A continuous labelling experiment using 13C-CO2 was set up in open-top chambers in order to follow fluxes of assimilates from the plant into the rhizosphere. Labelling was performed for one growing season by adding low amounts of CO2 depleted in 13C to the atmosphere of the open-top chambers, resulting in a difference of ∆ 13C 5‰ V-PDB compared to ambient conditions. The label was recovered in both plant parts and soil microbial communities, analysed via phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) side chains. PLFA 18:2ω6,9 showed a significant incorporation of the 13C label in October, indicating that fungi utilized plant derived carbon. In bacterial PLFA no label incorporation was detected, probably due to a lower use of rhizodeposits or a preference to older carbon... |

It was the objective of this study to take a first cut at understanding the cost structure of coastal restoration technologies and to obtain some preliminary measures of cost-effectiveness of these technologies. This analysis focused on restoration projects funded by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA, also known as the Breaux Act), the primary funding source for restoration projects in Louisiana. Projects chosen were those that included a component of dredging sediment with the explicit objective of increasing acreage in the project area, i.e., of building land. |

The modeling of price risk in the theory and practice of commodity risk management has been developed far beyond that of crop yield risk. This is in large part due to the use of plausible stochastic price processes. We use the Pólya urn to identify and develop a model of the crop yield expectation stochastic process over a growing season. The process allows a role for agronomic events, such as growing degree days. The model is internally consistent in adhering to the martingale property. The limiting distribution is the beta, commonly used in yield modeling. By applying binomial tree analysis, we show how to use the framework to study hedging decisions and crop valuation. |
