A comparison of the analgesic efficacy of vedaprofeno, carprofen or ketofen after ovariohysterectomy in bitches Ciência Rural
Selmi,André Luis; Lins,Bruno Testoni; Cesar,Fernanda Bicudo; Figueiredo,Juliana Peboni; Duque,Juan Carlos.
In this study the authors aimed to compare the efficiency of carprofen, ketoprofen and vedaprofen for alleviating postoperative pain in bitches submitted to ovariohysterectomy (OH). Pre- and postoperative assessment of pain was made using serum levels of cortisol and glucose, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the University of Melbourne pain scale (UMPS) in twenty-one bitches undergoing OH. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of three groups: vedaprofen at 0.5mg kg-1, carprofen at 2.2mg kg-1 or ketoprofen at 2.2mg kg-1. All analgesics were given orally 2 hour before surgery. Assessments were made before surgery and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 and 24 hours post-extubation. No dog of this study required additional doses of analgesics. There were no...

A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Using Futures, Options, LRP Insurance, or AGR-Lite Insurance to Manage Risk for Cow-calf Producers AgEcon
Feuz, Dillon M..
A comparative analysis was performed looking at using cash, futures, options, or insurance to manage the price of calves for cow-calf producer. Risk can be reduced with the futures market and with options or LRP insurance. Options and LRP insurance are equivalent in the amount of risk that is reduced. AGR-Lite does not appear to be an effective policy at reducing risk for cow-calf producers.

A comparison of the leaf-litter ant fauna in a secondary atlantic forest with an adjacent pine plantation in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Pacheco,Renata; Silva,Rogério R; Morini,Maria S de C; Brandão,Carlos R F.
We investigated the influence of Pinus afforestation on the structure of leaf-litter ant communities in the southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest, studying an old secondary forest and a nearly 30 year-old never managed Pinus elliottii reforested area. A total of 12,826 individual ants distributed among 95 species and 32 genera were obtained from 50 1 m² samples/ habitat. Of these, 60 species were recorded in the pine plantation and 82 in the area of Atlantic forest; almost 50% of the species found in the secondary forest area were also present in the pine plantation. The number of species per sample was significantly higher in the secondary forest than in the pine plantation. Forest-adapted taxa are the most responsible for ant species richness...

A comparison of three methods to estimate variations in the relative abundance of moutain vizcachas (Lagidium viscacia) in the High Andes ecosystems Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Reppucci,Juan I.; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Mountain vizcachas are large rodents that constitute the main prey of the High Andes meso-carnivores. We compared the line transect pellet count, observation rate and photographic rate methods to estimate the relative abundance of Mountain vizcachas in the High Andes ecosystems. Although a more formal validation based on the comparison with true abundances is desirable, our results suggested that these simple and affordable indices are promising methods, especially if protocols and sampling efforts are carefully standardized. We recommend the use of photographic rates, which are likely to provide the most reliable estimates, especially where Mountain vizcachas are active at night.

A computation method in robust Bayesian decision theory Inra
Abraham, C..
We propose a method for computing the range of the optimal decisions when the utility function runs through a class u. The class u has constraints on the values and the shape of the utility functions. A discretization method enables to easily approximate the optimal decision associated with a particular utility function u is an element of u . The range of optimal decisions is computed by a Monte Carlo optimization method. An example is provided with numerical results.

A conceptual framework for the evolutionary selection of biologically 'essential' elements Nature Precedings
Mark Conyers.
Standard texts dutifully list 16 essential elements for plant growth, yet the literature indicates that the boundary between essential and nonessential nutrients for plants is not always clear. When animals and 'lower' organisms are considered, the team of 16 is considerably expanded and the notion of essentiality is blurred. Why are some elements more important than others to plants and to organisms in general? Here I propose three criteria by which elements might have been selected in the development of organisms: low atomic weight, at least modest abundance, and ease of assembly into complex structures. Assembly of the structural elements C, N, S, P, and O is based on valency and ionic potential. The selection of monovalent elements...

A condition of cooperation. Games on network Nature Precedings
Tomohiko Konno.
Natural selection is often regarded as a result of severe competition. Defect seems beneficial for a single individual in many cases. However, cooperation is observed in many levels of biological systems ranging from single cells to animals, including human society. We have yet known that in unstructured populations, evolution favors defectors over cooperators. On the other hand, there have been much interest on evolutionary games^1,2^ on structured population and on graphs^3-16^. Structures of biological systems and societies of animals can be taken as networks. They discover that network structures determine results of the games. Together with the recent interest of complex networks^17,18^, many researchers investigate real network structures. Recently...

A continuous labelling approach to recover photosynthetically fixed carbon in plant tissue and rhizosphere organisms of young beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) using 13C depleted CO2 Organic Eprints
Esperschütz, J.; Gattinger, A.; Buegger, F.; Lang, H.; Munch, J.; Schloter, M.; Winkler, J..
A continuous labelling experiment using 13C-CO2 was set up in open-top chambers in order to follow fluxes of assimilates from the plant into the rhizosphere. Labelling was performed for one growing season by adding low amounts of CO2 depleted in 13C to the atmosphere of the open-top chambers, resulting in a difference of ∆ 13C 5‰ V-PDB compared to ambient conditions. The label was recovered in both plant parts and soil microbial communities, analysed via phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) side chains. PLFA 18:2ω6,9 showed a significant incorporation of the 13C label in October, indicating that fungi utilized plant derived carbon. In bacterial PLFA no label incorporation was detected, probably due to a lower use of rhizodeposits or a preference to older carbon...

A contribution to the phytogeography of Brazilian campos: an analysis based on Poaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
Garcia,Ricardo José Francischetti; Longhi-Wagner,Hilda Maria; Pirani,José Rubens; Meirelles,Sérgio Tadeu.
Twenty areas from eight Brazilian states were compared according to a list of 224 species of Poaceae. In order to determinate affinity patterns between the areas, a binary matrix was submitted to cluster and ordination analysis. The patterns found were then faced to climate and geographic position. The scores corresponding to the areas obtained from the cluster analysis showed a strong correlation to temperature. The scores corresponding to the species suggest a gradient that associates distribution patterns to the photosynthetic pathway (C3 or C4). The current results suggest that the traditional classification of the Southern American grasslands might require some modification in order to be broadly applicable in the Brazilian context.

A COORDENAÇÃO AGROINDUSTRIAL CITRICOLA BRASILEIRA E OS NOVOS RECURSOS DE PODER: DOS POLITICOS AOS JURIDICOS AgEcon
Paulillo, Luiz Fernando; Almeida, Luiz Manoel de Moraes Camargo.
This work shows that the political and legal resources available to citrus farmers have become as strategic as financial, technological and organizational resources. The study presents an analysis of the Brazilian citrus business governance, which is defined by the use of different strategies among citrus farmers and processing plants: the citrus farmers and their main association use political resources, while some big juice processing plants resort to legal resources. This opposition represents a new obstacle to the achievement of positive results by citrus farmers in the current power network. Court orders demonstrate that orange supply contracts have become a fundamental empowering instrument in the sector, leading to strategic gains for the juice...

A Cost Analysis of Rapid Land-Building Technologies for Coastal Restoration in Louisiana AgEcon
Petrolia, Daniel R.; Kim, Tae-Goun; Moore, Ross G.; Caffey, Rex H..
It was the objective of this study to take a first cut at understanding the cost structure of coastal restoration technologies and to obtain some preliminary measures of cost-effectiveness of these technologies. This analysis focused on restoration projects funded by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA, also known as the Breaux Act), the primary funding source for restoration projects in Louisiana. Projects chosen were those that included a component of dredging sediment with the explicit objective of increasing acreage in the project area, i.e., of building land.

A Cost Function Analysis of Crop Insurance Moral Hazard and Agricultural Chemical Use AgEcon
Liang, Yan; Coble, Keith H..
This paper employs a cost function analysis method to investigate the existence of moral hazard in cotton buy-up insurance. The trans-log cost function estimates of the own-price elasticity of fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide is -0.222, -0.143, and -0.121, respectively for Mississippi cotton production. Our results found statistically significant relationship between per acre direct cost and cotton buy-up insurance for year 2001 and 2005 in Mississippi. Our results also indicate that moral hazard can either decrease or increase agricultural input usage depending specific production condition in an individual year. But in general the results support effects smaller than anecdotal evidence would suggest.
