A matter of trust: How trust influences organic consumption Organic Eprints
Smed, Sinne; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Kærgård, N.; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
This paper shows that general trust in the organic label as well as perceived positive health effects of eating organic products have positive causal effects on actual organic consumption. The data used is panel data for 830 households reporting actual purchases together with responding to a comprehensive concerning questionnaire attitudes in 2002 and 2007. The paper also shows that perceived positive environmental effects and perceived better animal welfare related to organic production have no significant effect on actual behaviour, whereas concern for artificial additives and low price sensitivity increases the organic budget share. Surprisingly enough, households who worry about GMO or pesticides do not seem to have a higher propensity to purchase...

A meta-analysis of the response of calorie demand to income changes AgEcon
Ogundari, Kolawole; Abdulai, Awudu.
Over the past three decades, several studies have analyzed the response of calorie intake to income with varying and inconclusive results. This paper review these studies and employs meta-analysis to examine the potential bias in the calorie-income elasticity, as well as the impact of specific study attributes on these elasticities reported in the empirical literature. A total of 40 studies which yielded 99 estimated elasticities were considered. The results show the presence of publication (reporting) selection bias in the reported elasticities. Besides, the estimates revealed evidence of positive and significant empirical effect of income on calorie intake from all the studies that goes beyond publication bias. Study attributes such as ranking of the...

A method for the use of the radiotracer 55Fe for microautoradiography and CARD-FISH of natural bacterial communities ArchiMer
Fourquez, Marion; Obernosterer, Ingrid; Blain, Stephane.
Heterotrophic bacteria are key players in the biogeochemical cycle of iron (Fe) in the ocean, but the capability of different bacterial groups to access this micronutrient is ignored thus far. The aim of our study was to develop a protocol for the combined application of microautoradiography (MICRO) and catalyzed reporter depositionfluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) using the radioisotope 55Fe. Among the different washing solutions tested, Ti-citrate-EDTA was the most efficient for the removal of extracellular 55Fe providing sufficiently low background values. We further demonstrate that the washing of cells with Ti-citrate-EDTA and the fixation with paraformaldehyde or formaldehyde do not induce leakage of intracellular 55Fe. Incubating...

A microbial community analysis of the octocoral Eunicea fusca Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Duque-Alarcón,Angela; Santiago-Vázquez,Lory Z; Kerr,Russell G.
While there is a significant and growing body of knowledge describing the microbial communities of marine invertebrates such as sponges, there are very few such studies focused on octocorals. The octocoral Eunicea fusca is common on reefs in various regions of the Caribbean and has been the subject of natural product investigations. As part of an effort to describe the microbial community associated with octocorals, a culture-independent analysis of the bacterial community of E. fusca was conducted. Specifically, a 16S rDNA clone library analysis was performed to provide baseline data. A total of 40 bacteria members from 11 groups were found. In general, Proteobacteria were the dominant group with a total of 24 species and α-Proteobacteria...

A Middle Pleistocene Northeast Atlantic coccolithophore record: Paleoclimatology and paleoproductivity aspects ArchiMer
Amore, F. O.; Flores, J. A.; Voelker, A. H. L.; Lebreiro, S. M.; Palumbo, E.; Sierro, F. J..
Changes in paleoclimate and paleoproductivity patterns have been identified by analysing, in conjunction with other available proxy data, the coccolithophore assemblages from core MD03-2699, located in the Portuguese margin in the time interval from the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 13/14 boundary to MIS 9 (535 to 300 ka). During the Mid-Brunhes event, the assemblages associated with the eccentricity minima are characterised by higher nannoplankton accumulation rate (NAR) values and by the blooming of the opportunistic genus Gephyrocapsa. Changes in coccolithophore abundance are also related to glacial-interglacial cycles. Higher NAR and numbers of coccoliths/g mainly occurred during the interglacial periods, while these values decreased during the glacial...

A model study of the seasonal and long-term North Atlantic surface pCO(2) variability ArchiMer
Tjiputra, J. F.; Olsen, A.; Assmann, K.; Pfeil, Benjamin; Heinze, C..
A coupled biogeochemical-physical ocean model is used to study the seasonal and long-term variations of surface pCO(2) in the North Atlantic Ocean. The model agrees well with recent underway pCO(2) observations from the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) in various locations in the North Atlantic. Some of the distinct seasonal cycles observed in different parts of the North Atlantic are well reproduced by the model. In most regions except the subpolar domain, recent observed trends in pCO(2) and air-sea carbon fluxes are also simulated by the model. Over the longer period between 1960-2008, the primary mode of surface pCO(2) variability is dominated by the increasing trend associated with the invasion of anthropogenic CO2 into the ocean. We show that the...

A molecular marker approach using intron flanking EST-PCR to map candidate genes in peach (Prunus persica) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Diez-de-Medina,Sergio; Silva,Herman.
In Peach (Prunus persica) several physiological changes, such as woolliness, triggered by chilling injury are involved in major production losses due to cold storage of the fruits during shipping. Additionally, the low level of polymorphisms among peach varieties is an important limitation in the search for new molecular markers that could be associated with economically important traits. Therefore, a functional approach was employed to associate candidate genes with an informative marker in peach. The data was obtained from the results of an in silico analysis of four different cold peach treatments. Thirty two candidate genes were selected that were aligned against Arabidopsis thaliana genomic sequences to design intron-flanking EST-PCR markers. These...

Due to climate change, forests are likely to face new hazards, which may require adaptation of our existing silvicultural practices. However, it is difficult to imagine a forest management approach that can simultaneously minimize all risks of damage. Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been developed to help decision makers choose between actions that require reaching a compromise among criteria of different weights. We adapted this method and produced a multicriteria risk analysis (MCRA) to compare the risk of damage associated with various forest management systems with a range of management intensity. The objective was to evaluate the effect of four forest management alternatives (FMAs) (i.e., close to nature, extensive management with combined...

A multi-period positive mathematical programming approach for assessing economic impact of drought in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia AgEcon
Qureshi, Muhammad Ejaz; Ahmad, Mobin-ud-Din; Whitten, Stuart M.; Kirby, Mac.
In the last decade, the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB), Australia faced a severe drought which affected its agriculture production. Sustainable diversion limits as proposed in the Australian Government’s basin plan together with climate change is expected to impact on future agriculture production and development in the MDB. We developed a biophysical-economic mathematical model calibrated against the observed multi-period land use data utilising the positive mathematical programming (PMP) approach to evaluate the impacts on agricultural production activities of a range of climate events and policy options. This is an extension of our previous work where the model was calibrated against a single year and focus was on the southern MDB only. The multi-period...
