A geometric morphometric study of sex differences in the scapula, humerus and ulna of Chaetophractus villosus (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Acuña,Francisco; Sidorkewicj,Nora S.; Popp,Albertina I.; Casanave,Emma B..
ABSTRACT Sexual differences in some of the components of the pectoral girdle and forelimb of Chaetophractus villosus (Desmarest, 1804) were investigated by means of geometric morphometrics. A total of 15 scapulae (7 males, 8 females) and 50 humeri-ulnae complexes (24 males, 26 females) were examined. No size differences were detected between sexes for any of the bones, but shape differences were found for the humerus and the ulna that enhance the in-forces or the related in-levers. Females had a more robust humerus, with an enlarged deltoid tuberosity, a more spherical head, higher tubercular and epicondylar widths, and more developed supracondylar crests. The ulna of the females was characterised by a more pronounced curvature along its main axis, a...

ADAIME, R.; BRITO, B. D.; LIMA, A. L.; CRUZ, K. R.; BARIANI, A.; JESUS-BARROS, C. R..

Asynchronous Hatching and Extended Parental Care in Aegla schmitti (Decapoda, Anomura) BABT
Adam,Carolina de Lima; Marochi,Murilo; Lacerda,Mariana; Trevisan,Andre; Masunari,Setuko.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe the behavior of newly-hatched juveniles and maternal care in Aegla schmitti. The experiment was conducted using seven ovigerous females with eggs at different stages of embryonic development and 12 eggs that had been placed in a separate aquarium. We observed asynchronous hatching in all females, with a mean of 66 hatched juveniles per female. The females also exhibited extended maternal care, allowing the juveniles to remain inside their abdominal chamber or on other parts of their body in the first few days after hatching. The juveniles that hatched in a separate aquarium fed on the remaining eggs, despite food being available. The incubation period and number of hatched eggs are highly variable between...

A confiabilidade do PRODES: estimativa da acurácia do mapeamento do desmatamento no estado Mato Grosso. Repositório Alice
ADAMI, M.; GOMES, A. R.; BELUZZO, A.; COELHO, A. dos S.; VALERIANO, D. de M.; RAMOS, F. de S.; NARVAES, I. da S.; BROWN, I. F.; OLIVEIRA, I. D. de; SANTOS, L. B.; MAURANO, L. E. P.; WATRIN, O. dos S.; GRAÇA, P. M. L. de A..
PRODES is completing almost thirty years of uninterrupted monitoring of clear-cut deforestation over the Brazilian Amazon. Until now, no estimate of its mapping accuracy has been made. In this sense, this article brings a first approximation of mapping accuracy estimation of PRODES deforested areas, taking as example the state of Mato Grosso for the year 2014. For this, a random sampling panel was constructed, stratified with two strata, the deforestation of 2014 and the remaining forest. The sample size was calculated using the binomial function. In addition, a web platform was built to evaluate the points drawn by three independent evaluators. The global accuracy of the mapping of deforestation for the state of Mato Grosso, for the year 2014 was 94.5%,...

Antiangiogenic VEGF165b Expression in Human Breast MCF-7 and MCF-10A Cells Exposed to Reverse Transcriptase and Protease Inhibitors International Journal of Morphology
Adefolaju,Gbenga Anthony; Scholtz,Kathrine Elizabeth; Hosie,Margot Jill.
The combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), a multidrug combination regimen, usually consisting Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors, non- Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors and Protease Inhibitors has altered the morbidity pattern affecting HIV-infected individuals to include non-AIDS-defining malignancies (nADMs). The speculation is rife; does cART induce or promote the progression of nADMs such as breast cancer? This study was therefore designed to investigate of the effects of some antiretroviral drugs (at clinically relevant concentrations) on the expression of anti-angiogenic gene; VEGF165b in two human breast cell lines; MCF-7 and MCF-10A by Real Time qPCR and immuno-fluorescence. All of the antiretroviral drugs and combinations...

Biomphalaria snails are instrumental in transmission of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. With the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate schistosomiasis as a global health problem by 2025, there is now renewed emphasis on snail control. Here, we characterize the genome of Biomphalaria glabrata, a lophotrochozoan protostome, and provide timely and important information on snail biology. We describe aspects of phero-perception, stress responses, immune function and regulation of gene expression that support the persistence of B. glabrata in the field and may define this species as a suitable snail host for S. mansoni. We identify several potential targets for developing novel control measures aimed at reducing snail-mediated transmission of...

Modulation of host HIF-1α activity and the tryptophan pathway contributes to the anti-Toxoplasma gondii potential of nanoparticles OAK
Adeyemi, Oluyomi Stephen; Murata, Yuho; Sugi, Tatsuki; Han, Yongmei; Kato, Kentaro.
Background Toxoplasmosis constitutes a large global burden that is further exacerbated by the shortcomings of available therapeutic options, thus underscoring the urgent need for better anti-Toxoplasma gondii therapy or strategies. Recently, we showed that the anti-parasitic action of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) could, in part, be due to changes in redox status as well as in the parasite mitochondrial membrane potential. Methods In the present study, we explored the in vitro mode of action of the anti-T. gondii effect of NPs by evaluating the contributions of host cellular processes, including the tryptophan pathway and hypoxia-inducing factor activity. NPs, at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 200 μg/ml were screened for anti-parasitic activity....

Inorganic nanoparticles kill Toxoplasma gondii via changes in redox status and mitochondrial membrane potential OAK
Adeyemi, Oluyomi Stephen; Murata, Yuho; Sugi, Tatsuki; Kato, Kentaro.
This study evaluated the anti-Toxoplasma gondii potential of gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles (NPs). Inorganic NPs (0.01-1,000 mu g/mL) were screened for antiparasitic activity. The NPs caused >90% inhibition of T. gondii growth with EC50 values of <= 7, <= 1, and <= 100 mu g/mL for gold, silver, and platinum NPs, respectively. The NPs showed no host cell cytotoxicity at the effective anti-T. gondii concentrations; the estimated selectivity index revealed a >= 20-fold activity toward the parasite versus the host cell. The anti-T. gondii activity of the NPs, which may be linked to redox signaling, affected the parasite mitochondrial membrane potential and parasite invasion, replication, recovery, and infectivity potential. Our results...

Uniqueness Properties of The Solution of The Inverse Problem for The Sturm-Liouville Equation With Discontinuous Leading Coefficient Anais da ABC (AABC)
ADILOGLU,ANAR; GÜRDAL,MEHMET; KINCI,AYŞE N..
Abstract The present paper studies uniqueness properties of the solution of the inverse problem for the Sturm-Liouville equation with discontinuous leading coefficient and the separated boundary conditions. It is proved that the considered boundary-value is uniquely reconstructed, i.e. the potential function of the equation and the constants in the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by given Weyl function or by the given spectral data.

Ensilering av frasorterte poteter og gulrøtter - fra tap til fôr med tilleggsverdi Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen A.; Slizyte, Rasa; Alakomi, Hanna-Leena; Rubash, Uladzimir; Ebbesvik, Martha.

Equol and enterolactone – two mammalian phytoestrogens with estrogenic potency found in organically produced milk Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen A.; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Cows fed red clover yield milk with high concentrations of the isoflavandiol equol, a phytoestrogen with high estrogen potency. Soy products have much higher content of isoflavones than milk, but not all humans are able to produce equol from isoflavones. Many plant lignans can be metabolised to enterolactone, and milk concentrations tend to be higher during grazing season than indoor feeding season. Therefore, milk produced on feed containing red clover and milk produced on pasture may be considered a functional food. However, more documentations on possible effects in humans, including unwanted side effects are needed.
