Supplementary taxonomic description of Demidospermus pinirampi (Monogenoidea, Dactylogyridae), with a new host record and an expansion of its distribution range Acta Amazonica
AGUIAR,Julio Cesar Cenci de; BUENO,Glauco Baptista Franco; SANTOS,Sonia Maria Cursino dos; ADRIANO,Edson Aparecido.
ABSTRACT During a survey conducted in the Lajeado Reservoir of the Tocantins River, in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, dactylogyrids were recovered from the gills of Pimelodina flavipinnis. Initial morphological analysis showed these dactylogyrids shared aspects of character with species of Demidospermus, with affinity to Demidospermus pinirampi, despite exhibiting differences with the original description by Kritsky et al. (1987) regarding the vagina, the base of the male copulatory organ and the shape and length of the bars. The analysis of the holotypes of D. pinirampi and its most morphologically close species, Demidospermus luckyi, revealed that these dactylogyrids were indeed D. pinirampi. This study therefore reports a new host and locality of...

A possible relationship between gluconeogenesis and glycogen metabolism in rabbits during myocardial ischemia Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGUIAR,RAQUEL R. DE; VALE,DANIELA F.; SILVA,RENATO M. DA; MUNIZ,YOLANDA P.; ANTUNES,FERNANDA; LOGULLO,CARLOS; OLIVEIRA,ANDRÉ L.A.; ALMEIDA,ADRIANA J. DE.
ABSTRACT Ischemia is responsible for many metabolic abnormalities in the heart, causing changes in organ function. One of modifications occurring in the ischemic cell is changing from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. This change causes the predominance of the use of carbohydrates as an energy substrate instead of lipids. In this case, the glycogen is essential to the maintenance of heart energy intake, being an important reserve to resist the stress caused by hypoxia, using glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation. In order to study the glucose anaerobic pathways utilization and understand the metabolic adaptations, New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to ischemia caused by Inflow occlusion technique. The animals were monitored during surgery by pH and...

Comparative analysis of diet composition and its relation to morphological characteristics in juvenile fish of three lutjanid species in a Mexican Pacific coastal lagoon Neotropical Ichthyology
Aguilar-Betancourt,Consuelo M.; González-Sansón,Gaspar; Flores-Ortega,Juan R.; Kosonoy-Aceves,Daniel; Lucano-Ramírez,Gabriela; Ruiz-Ramírez,Salvador; Padilla-Gutierrez,Sandra C.; Curry,R. Allen.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this research was to investigate the differences in diet composition among three species of the genus Lutjanus inhabiting a coastal lagoon as juveniles. The working hypothesis was that these species feed on a common base of food resources and therefore, some niche overlap is present in terms of general diet composition. However, changes in the trophic niche with size and differences in some morphological traits among species explain observed differences in diet. Fish were collected during 42 sampling trips conducted regularly from February 2011 to January 2012 using several types of fishing gear. Total number of analyzed stomachs was 288 for Lutjanus argentiventris from 2.3 to 19.9 cm total length (TL); 178 for Lutjanus colorado...

Water temperature, body mass and fasting heat production of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGUILAR,FREDY A.A.; CRUZ,THALINE M.P. DA; MOURÃO,GERSON B.; CYRINO,JOSÉ EURICO P..
ABSTRACT Knowledge on fasting heat production (HEf) of fish is key to develop bioenergetics models thus improving feeding management of farmed species. The core of knowledge on HEf of farmed, neotropical fish is scarce. This study assessed the effect of body mass and water temperature on standard metabolism and fasting heat production of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, an omnivore, Neotropical fresh water characin important for farming and fisheries industries all through South American continent. An automated, intermittent flow respirometry system was used to measure standard metabolic rate (SMR) of pacu (17 - 1,050 g) at five water temperatures: 19, 23, 26, 29 and 33 °C. Mass specific SMR increased with increasing water temperature but decreased as...

Benefits of fiber and antioxidant power of rice bran in Vitamin E deficient rats ABCL
Aguilar-García,Carlos; Cioccia,Anna María; Gavino,Victor; Gutiérrez,Marlén; Hevia,Patricio.
Dietary fiber requirements are met by only a small fraction of the population. There is need for supplemented foods to fill this gap. Rice bran (RB) is high in fiber and has antioxidant properties. The effects of rice bran fiber on several metabolic indicators and the antioxidant capacity of rice bran in rats was reported. Rats were divided into 4 dietary groups: Vitamin E-sufficient with (+VitE/RB+) or without (+VitE/RB-) rice bran; Vitamin E-deficient with (-VitE/RB+) or without (-VitE/RB-) rice bran. Food intake, growth and feed efficiency were similar in all groups but wet and dry fecal mass of the RB+ groups were 3 times higher than the RB- groups. Blood hemoglobin and liver iron were also similar among all groups. However, the liver VitE...

Entomopathogenic fungi: Arre polisporic isolates morne pathogenic than monosporic strains? Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.

Currently only monosporic strains from several entomopathogenic fungi have been selected and used for mass production and bioinsecticide manufacturing worldwide. The main reasons for the use of single spore instead of multispore strains are the attenuated virulence and the contaminants of the same species. In this study, different polisporic isolates and their monosporic combinations were tested against Tenebrio molitor (L.) larvae as an insect model. Isolates were obtained from arid soils. Four Metarhizium sp. (Metschn.) multisporic isolates (CEP413, CEP589, CEP590 and CEP591) were selected for bioassays. Trials were performed to evaluate mortality on three treatments, Full Polisporic (FP), Partial Polisporic (PP) and Pure Monosporic (PM). Cumulative...

Is autotoxicity responsible for inhibition growth of new conspecific seedlings under the canopy of the invasive Acacia dealbata Link? Gayana Botánica
Aguilera,Narciso; Guedes,Lubia M.; Becerra,José; González,Luis.
ABSTRACT Autotoxicity is a particular form of allelopathy and is suspected to be responsible for regulating intraspecific competition under the Acacia dealbata Link (Fabaceae) canopy. Was established a bioassay with controlled conditions following the natural patterns of plant material accumulation under the A. dealbata canopy to determine the effects of chemical compounds released by leaves, bark, flowers and pods of the invasive species on germination and early growth of conspecific seedlings. Morphological changes caused by A. dealbata plant parts in roots of A. dealbata seedlings grown in natural and controlled conditions were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. The composition and behavior of the phytotoxicity of litter under the A. dealbata...

Forage yield of Coastcross-1 pastures inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense Animal Sciences
Aguirre, Priscila Flôres; Olivo, Clair Jorge; Rodrigues, Patricia Fernandes; Falk, Débora Ribeiro; Adams, Carine Beatriz; Schiafino, Helena Parcianello.
The high cost of nitrogen fertilizers increases the expenses in pasture-based animal production. The inoculation with plant growth-promoting bacteria is an alternative to reduce the costs. This study evaluated the forage yield of Coastcross-1 pastures inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense, fertilized with different levels of nitrogen and subjected to cuts. The experiment was a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The factors were the inoculation (without inoculation, inoculated only at planting and reinoculated in the second year), levels of nitrogen (0, 100 and 200 kg ha-1 year-1 N) and seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter) when cuts were made. Forage yield, forage accumulation rate, botanical and structural pasture...
