A case of severe glutathione synthetase deficiency with novel GSS mutations BJMBR
Xia,H.; Ye,J.; Wang,L.; Zhu,J.; He,Z..
Glutathione synthetase deficiency (GSSD) is a rare inborn error of glutathione metabolism with autosomal recessive inheritance. The severe form of the disease is characterized by acute metabolic acidosis, usually present in the neonatal period with hemolytic anemia and progressive encephalopathy. A case of a male newborn infant who had severe metabolic acidosis with high anion gap, hemolytic anemia, and hyperbilirubinemia is reported. A high level of 5-oxoproline was detected in his urine and a diagnosis of generalized GSSD was made. DNA sequence analysis revealed the infant to be compound heterozygous with two mutations, c.738dupG in exon 8 of GSS gene resulting in p.S247fs and a repetitive sequence in exon 3 of GSS gene. Treatment after diagnosis of GSSD...

A case study for a multitemporal segmentation approach in optical remote sensing images. Repositório Alice
COSTA, W.; FONSECA, L.; KÖRTING, T.; SIMÕES, M.; KUCHLER, P..
Continuous observations from remote sensors provide high temporal and spatial resolution imagery, and better remote sensing image segmentation techniques are mandatory for efficient analysis. Among them, one of the most applied segmentation techniques is the region growing algorithm. Within this context, this paper describes a study case for a multitemporal segmentation that adapts the traditional region growing technique. Our method aims to detect homogeneous regions in space and time observing a sequence of optical remote sensing images. Tests were conducted by considering the Dynamic Time Warping distance as the homogeneity criterion to grow regions. A case study on high temporal resolution for sequences of Landsat-8 vegetation indices products provided...

A C-Band Geophysical Model Function for Determining Coastal Wind Speed Using Synthetic Aperture Radar ArchiMer
Lu, Yiru; Zhang, Biao; Perrie, William; Mouche, Alexis; Li, Xiaofeng; Wang, He.
A new geophysical model function (GMF), called C_SARMOD2, has been developed to relate high-resolution C-band normalized radar cross section (NRCS), acquired in VV polarization over the ocean, to the 10-m height wind speed. A total of 3078 RADARSAT-2 and Sentinel-1A VV-polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, acquired under different wind speed conditions, were collocated with in situ buoy measurements. The paired dataset was used to derive transfer functions and coefficients of C_SARMOD2, and then to validate the wind speed retrievals. The comparison between SAR-retrieved wind speeds and buoy measurements show almost no bias and a root mean square error of 1.84 m/s. Two representative quad-and dual-polarization SAR images, acquired from coastal...

A closer look at Batillipes dicrocercus and new records of Batillipes potiguarensis (Tardigrada: Arthrotardigrada) from the Brazilian coast with comments on intra- and interspecific variability Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Santos,Érika; Gomes Jr,Edivaldo; Rocha,Clélia M. C. da; Bartels,Paul J.; Fontoura,Paulo.
ABSTRACT Batillipes specimens collected in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, on the Brazilian Coast (Campos Basin and Potiguar Basin) with a bifurcated caudal appendage similar to B. dicrocercus Pollock, 1970 were assigned to B. potiguarensis Santos, da Rocha, Gomes Jr & Fontoura, 2017. This species was described as having a roundish caudal protrusion but, as shown in this study, it exhibits intraspecific variability of the morphology of the caudal apparatus. The examination of specimens of B. dicrocercus from the type locality (Massachussetts, U.S.A.) and the analysis of the original description and two subsequent emended descriptions, one from the Gulf of Mexico (U.S.A.) and another from the Mediterranean Sea, used for comparison, revealed important...

A coastal coccolithophore maintains pH homeostasis and switches carbon sources in response to ocean acidification ArchiMer
Liu, Yi-wei; Eagle, Robert A.; Aciego, Sarah M.; Gilmore, Rosaleen E.; Ries, Justin B..
Ocean acidification will potentially inhibit calcification by marine organisms; however, the response of the most prolific ocean calcifiers, coccolithophores, to this perturbation remains under characterized. Here we report novel chemical constraints on the response of the widespread coccolithophore species Ochrosphaera neapolitana (O. neapolitana) to changing-CO2 conditions. We cultured this algae under three pCO(2)-controlled seawater pH conditions (8.05, 8.22, and 8.33). Boron isotopes within the algae's extracellular calcite plates show that this species maintains a constant pH at the calcification site, regardless of CO2-induced changes in pH of the surrounding seawater. Carbon and oxygen isotopes in the algae's calcite plates and carbon isotopes in...

Abstract Passiflora species are well known for their common use in popular medicine for the treatment of several diseases, such as insomnia, anxiety, and hysteria, in addition to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic and antibacterial potential. However, few data about the chemical composition and the medicinal potential of in vitro derived materials are available. Therefore, the goal of this work was to compare, for the first time, the phytoconstituents of in vitro derived materials of four Passiflora species, and evaluate the antibacterial potential of their extracts against 20 Gram-positive and negative strains. Chromatographic analysis indicated the presence of saponins in roots extracts from all studied species, whereas leaf extracts...

Assaf,Jean Claude; Atoui,Ali; Khoury,André El; Chokr,Ali; Louka,Nicolas.
ABSTRACT Several strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), frequently used in food fermentation and preservation, have been reported to bind different types of toxins in liquid media. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different concentrations of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) to bind aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in liquid media. AFM1 binding was tested following repetitive washes or filtration procedures in combination with additional treatments such as heating, pipetting, and centrifugation. The mixture of L. rhamnosus GG and AFM1 was incubated for 18 h at 37 °C and the binding efficiency was determined by quantifying the unbound AFM1 using HPLC. The stability of the complexes viable bacteria-AFM1 and heat treated bacteria-AFM1 was...

Abstract Whey is well-known for the functional and bioactive properties of its proteins and peptides, which are of great interest to food and nutraceutical industries. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of four different commercial proteases (Novo ProD® (NPD), Alcalase® (ALC), Pancreas Trypsin® (TRY), and Flavourzyme® (FLA)) in the generation of hydrolysates with emulsifying and antioxidant activities. Hydrolysis processes were carried out for 5 h, reaching maximum degrees of 18.5, 15.5, 9.2, and 8.7% for NPD, ALC, TRY, and FLA, respectively. All tested enzymes generated very diverse, but conservative peptide profiles when comparing the treatments along the time, with the main enzymatic actions up to 120 min-reaction. An increase in the...

One of the primary challenges of our time is develop sustainable farming systems that can feed the world with minimal environmental impact. Some studies argue that organic farming systems are best because these have minimal impact on the environment and are positive for biodiversity. Others argue that no-tillage systems are better because such systems save energy and preserve soil structure and quality. A third group argues that conventional farming systems are best because yield per hectare is highest. However, so far, systematic comparisons of major arable production systems are rare and often it is difficult to compare the advantages and disadvantages of farming systems in a systematic way due to differences in soil/site characteristics and management....

A comparison of the trophic ecology of Beaufort Sea Gadidae using fatty acids and stable isotopes ArchiMer
Brewster, J. D.; Giraldo, Carolina; Choy, E. S.; Macphee, S. A.; Hoover, C.; Lynn, B.; Mcnicholl, D. G.; Majewski, A.; Rosenberg, B.; Power, M.; Reist, J. D.; Loseto, L. L..
Polar cod (Boreogadus saida) is one of the most studied Arctic marine fishes given its circumpolar distribution and centralised role in the Arctic marine food web. In contrast, relatively little is known about two other Arctic Gadidae: saffron cod (Eleginus gracilis) and Greenland cod (Gadus ogac). Climate change is expected to have an effect on sea ice-associated species, such as polar cod, but due to our lack of knowledge of other arctic gadid species it remains unclear how climate change will impact them and their interactions within the arctic marine ecosystem. Here, we explored the ecology of three Arctic Gadidae that co-occur in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Stable isotope (SI) (niche overlap) and fatty acid (FA) (correspondence analysis and linear...

Transcription factors (TFs) are pivotal regulatory proteins that control gene expression in a contextdependent and tissue-specific manner. In contrast to human, where comprehensive curated TF collections exist, bovine TFs are only rudimentary recorded and characterized. In this article, we present a manually-curated compendium of 865 sequence-specific DNA-binding bovines TFs, which we analyzed for domain family distribution, evolutionary conservation, and tissue-specific expression. In addition, we provide a list of putative transcription cofactors derived from known interactions with the identified TFs. Since there is a general lack of knowledge concerning the regulation of gene expression in cattle, the curated list of TF should provide a basis for an...

A comprehensive transcriptome analysis of skeletal muscles in two Polish pig breeds differing in fat and meat quality traits Genet. Mol. Biol.
Piórkowska,Katarzyna; Żukowski,Kacper; Ropka-Molik,Katarzyna; Tyra,Mirosław; Gurgul,Artur.
Abstract Pork is the most popular meat in the world. Unfortunately, the selection pressure focused on high meat content led to a reduction in pork quality. The present study used RNA-seq technology to identify metabolic process genes related to pork quality traits and fat deposition. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between pigs of Pulawska and Polish Landrace breeds for two the most important muscles (semimembranosus and longissimus dorsi). A total of 71 significant DEGs were reported: 15 for longissimus dorsi and 56 for semimembranosus muscles. The genes overexpressed in Pulawska pigs were involved in lipid metabolism (APOD, LXRA, LIPE, AP2B1, ENSSSCG00000028753 and OAS2) and proteolysis (CST6, CTSD, ISG15 and UCHL1). In Polish...

Abstract Thermal environment is recognized to be one the most important ecological factor to determine domestic animal growth, development and productivity for direct and indirect effects on its physiology and behavior. Despite having specific and individual adaptation, is very common, within seasonal or diurnal temperature variations, animals deal with situations outside their thermal comfort zone. Due to heat stress, dairy cows reduce milk production and fertility, and therefore, had achieved an increasing in metabolic disorders incidence, causing low revenues to farm in short and medium periods. Due to world climate change more impact of the meteorological variables on animal responses is expected for the future. This study aimed to describe and...
