Turkey Meat. Seasonal Effect on Meat Quality and on Dead on Arrival Index in a Commercial Plant BABT
Carvalho,Rafael Humberto de; Soares,Adriana Lourenço; Guarnieri,Paulo Donizete; Oba,Alexandre; Ida,Elza Iouko; Shimokomaki,Massami.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of Pale, Soft, Exudative (PSE) meat and to characterize the Dark, Fim, Dry (DFD) meat as well as the Dead on Arrival (DOA) index in a commercial turkey slaughterhouse in southern Brazil during the summer and winter seasons. The journeys (n=64) were over a distance of 36 ± 20 km and took approximately 95 ± 20 min. Color (L*) and pH distribution of turkey breast meat (n=5,352) were evaluated from different farms (n=64) during the 2015-2016 years. The pH, water-holding capacity, color (L*, a*, b*) were used to establish cutoff values for DFD meat (L* < 44.0 and pH > 5.90) and presented correlation among them. The L* value was the highest during the summer (P<0.01), indicating the...

Two approaches to calculate TVDI in humid subtropical climate of southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Schirmbeck,Lucimara Wolfarth; Fontana,Denise Cybis; Schirmbeck,Juliano.
ABSTRACT: Soybean crops occupy most areas in Rio Grande do Sul State and are highly dependent on rainfall since most of them are non-irrigated. Rainfall during the harvest period is often insufficient to meet the water demand, making water indicators an important tool for the crops. This study compared two approaches in the parameterization process of TVDI (Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index) in a subtropical climate region of Brazil. The process used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images of the surface temperature (TS) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), with spatial resolutions of 1,000 m and periods of 8-16 d, respectively. The evaporative triangles for the TS/NDVI scatter plots were built either for each image...

Two European Cornus L. feeding leafmining moths, Antispila petryi Martini, 1899, sp. rev. and A. treitschkiella (Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1843) (Lepidoptera, Heliozelidae): an unjustified synonymy and overlooked range expansion Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Lees, D.C.; Doorenweerd, C.; Koster, J.C.; Bryner, Arnold , R.; Schreurs, A.; Timmermans, M.J.T.N.; Sattler, K..
Antispila treitschkiella (Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1843) and A. petryi Martini, 1899, sp. rev. were regarded as synonymous since 1978, but are shown to be two clearly separated species with different hostplants, life histories, DNA barcodes and morphology. Antispila treitschkiella feeds on Cornus mas L., is bivoltine, and has, by following its ornamentally planted host, greatly expanded its range in north-western Europe. In contrast A. petryi feeds on the widespread native C. sanguinea L., is univoltine, and is one of only two Antispila species previously resident in the British Isles, the Netherlands and northern Europe. Consequently, the increase in abundance of A. treitschkiella in the Netherlands since the early 1990s and in Great Britain in recent...

Two independent grain-length mutants mapped to a single region on the long arm of chromosome 2 in rice Bragantia
Jiang,Liangrong; Zheng,Jingsheng; Zhang,Zhiyong; Chen,Xiaolong; Chen,Fangyu; Wang,Tiansheng; Huang,Yumin; Wang,Houcong; Hong,Zonglie; Huang,Rongyu.
ABSTRACT Grain shape in rice is a key determinant of grain appearance, yield and market value, and thus has been widely studied. Rice mutant lines with long-grain phenotypes were previously isolated from an M2 population derived from mutagenized mature pollen grains that were treated with gamma-ray irradiation for a cultivar Ma85. To understand the genetic basis underlying the long-grain trait, two mutant lines, JF171 and JF178, were crossed with the short-grain parents JF222 and Samba, generating three F2 populations. Molecular marker-based genetic analysis was employed to detect the major QTLs that affected grain length, grain width, length-to-width ratio and grain weight. Based on the data obtained for the three populations, a joint major QTL for grain...

Two new records of Gynandromorphs in Xylocopa (Hymenoptera, Apidae s.l.) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Almeida,Rony Peterson Santos; Leite,Luis Anderson Ribeiro; Ramos,Kelli dos Santos.
Abstract Two new records of gynandromorphs in Xylocopa Latreille, 1802 (Hymenoptera, Apidae). Gynandromorphs are deviant morphological individuals with genetically distinct male and female tissues. Records of sex anomalies seems to be important to better understand the mechanisms regulating phenotypic expression. Herein, two new cases of gynandromorphs in carpenter bee species of Xylocopa from Brazil are described and figured: a mixed gynandromorph of the X. (Neoxylocopa) brasilianorum (Linnaeus, 1767) from São Paulo and a bilateral gynandromorph of the X. (Neoxylocopa) ordinaria Smith, 1874 from Sergipe.

Two new species of Odontostilbe historically hidden under O. microcephala (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Chuctaya,Junior; Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
ABSTRACT Specimens historically identified as Odontostilbe microcephala from the upper rio Paraná and Andean piedmont tributaries of the río Paraguay are reviewed and split in three species. We found that the distribution of O. microcephala is restricted to the Andean slope of the río Paraguay basin. The species is distinguished from congeners with subterminal mouth by the elongate body, usually 10-12 gill rakers on upper branch and smaller horizontal orbital diameter (24.6-32.8 % HL, mean 28.7%). Specimens from upper rio Paraná constitute two new species, diagnosed from other Cheirodontinae by the presence of mesopterygoid teeth, grouped on median portion and forming a continuous row. The new species are distinguished from each other by having...

Types of fluid-related features controlled by sedimentary cycles and fault network in deepwater Nigeria ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Ruffine, Livio; Ker, Stephan; Cauquil, E.; Gay, Aurelien.
The seismic characteristics of focused fluid-related features such as pockmarks and carbonate build-ups on the Nigerian continental slope have been investigated using complementary seismic data sets (reprocessed 3D exploration data and 2D Very High Resolution hull-mounted and near-bottom seismic data) coupled with the results of previous studies (sedimentological, geotechnical and geochemical analyses). The results show different types of fluid-related features within the hemipelagic phase of long duration (∼1 Myr) Turbidite/Hemipelagic cycles. They are the product of the disturbance of the hosting sediments following two main distinct processes: (1) no or low sediment deposition caused by fluid escape associated with seafloor settlement (benthic fauna,...

Typological characterisation of farms in a smallholder food-cash crop production system in Zimbabwe – opportunities for livelihood sustainability JARTS
Dunjana, Nothando; Zengeni, Rebecca; Muchaonyerwa, Pardon; Wuta, Menas.
The diversity of smallholder farms in space, resource endowment, production and consumption decisions are often a hindrance to the design, targeting, implementation and scaling out of agricultural development projects. Understanding farm heterogeneity is crucial in targeting interventions that can potentially contribute to improved crop productivity, food security and livelihood sustainability. The study sought to define and understand farm typology in a resettlement smallholder food-cash crop production area in Zimbabwe. Data was collected from five focus group discussions (FGDs), and 102 household interviews. Principal component analysis (PCA), multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and cluster analysis were used to analyse quantitative and qualitative...
