Understanding the mechanisms involved in the high sensitivity of Pecten maximus larvae to aeration ArchiMer
Pauletto, Marianna; Di Camillo, Barbara; Miner, Philippe; Huvet, Arnaud; Quillien, Virgile; Milan, Massimo; Ferraresso, Serena; Pegolo, Sara; Patarnello, Tomaso; Bargelloni, Luca.
Among reared bivalves, some “novel species”, such as the great scallop, Pecten maximus, have experienced more difficulty with routine reproduction due to their high sensitivity to biological, chemical, and physical stress during stages of early development. Working with high larval densities requires the use of aeration systems to provide optimal larval suspension and feed distribution. The high susceptibility of the great scallop to aeration in small-volume systems may impose an important limitation in hatchery-based practices. The present study aimed to investigate the processes impacted by aeration in P. maximus veliger larvae exposed to continuous aeration in small-volume tanks (10 L). Aeration appeared as major stressor that was responsible for early...

Understanding the Population Structure of the European Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Northeast Atlantic Ocean by Using Otolith Shape Analysis ArchiMer
Akkus, Gizem; Jemaa, Sharif; Cemal Gucu, Ali; Marchal, Paul; Carbonara, Pierluigi; Bacha, Mahmoud; Amara, Rachid; Ernande, Bruno; Saraux, Claire; Mahe, Kelig.
European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, is a small pelagic coastal marine fish largely spread from the North Sea to central Africa, including the entire Mediterranean and the Black and Azov Seas. The aim of the study is to understand the potential different population structure and their relationship between the Northeast Atlantic, Western, Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea anchovy population. The outlines of 2127 sagittal otoliths were collected from nineteen locations (English Channel, Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Black Sea), and added to existing information available from a previous study. Elliptical Fourier Analysis (EFA) was used to analyze the otolith shape variations among locations. Before examining the geographical differentiation by...

Underwater video offers new insights into community structure in the Grande Vasière (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Merillet, Laurene; Robert, Marianne; Salaun, Michele; Schuck, Lucie; Mouchet, Maud; Kopp, Dorothee.
Based on towed underwater videos, diversity patterns and their main environmental and anthropogenic drivers were assessed in the “Grande Vasière” (northeast Bay of Biscay), one of the main French fishing grounds. The density of bentho-demersal megafauna was recorded along 152 transects in this area in 2014. The highest number of taxa and densities were observed on the external margin of the Grande Vasière, in deep areas with low fishing intensity. The highest levels of taxa evenness were located on the central and coastal parts that are shallower and exposed to medium to high trawling intensity. Multivariate analysis identified four different communities driven by fishing intensity, depth, sediment type and bottom current speed. We distinguished three...

Unexpected spatial impact of treatment plant discharges induced by episodic hydrodynamic events: Modelling Lagrangian transport of fine particles by Northern Current intrusions in the bays of Marseille (France) ArchiMer
Millet, Bertrand; Pinazo, Christel; Banaru, Daniela; Pages, Remi; Guiart, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane.
Our study highlights the Lagrangian transport of solid particles discharged at the Marseille Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located at Cortiou on the southern coastline. We focused on episodic situations characterized by a coastal circulation pattern induced by intrusion events of the Northern Current (NC) on the continental shelf, associated with SE wind regimes. We computed, using MARS3D-RHOMA and ICHTHYOP models, the particle trajectories from a patch of 5.104 passive and conservative fine particles released at the WWTP outlet, during 2 chosen representative periods of intrusion of the NC in June 2008 and in October 2011, associated with S-SE and E-SE winds, respectively. Unexpected results highlighted that the amount of particles reaching the...

Ungedeckter Auslauf für Legehennen: Wie gestalten? Organic Eprints
Clerc, Maurice.

Uniformity trials size for estimating cherry tomato plot size Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Sari,Bruno Giacomini; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine how the size of the uniformity trial influences the estimation of cherry tomato plot size. The size of plot required to evaluate the mean length of fruit per plant, mean fruit width per plant, mean fruit weight per plant, number of bunches per plant, number of fruits per bunch, number of fruits per plant and total weight of fruits per plant was estimated in uniformity trials in two greenhouses: large (250 m²) and small (200 m²). In each greenhouse and row, and for each variable, 3000 plot size estimates were obtained by resampling and used to determine of 97.5 and 2.5% percentiles. Each row needs to be treated as a specific uniformity trial because of significant row variability. It is recommended that...

Unleashing the dog: Canine attack of 17 victims with the same modus operandi MV&Z
Lopes, C. E. B.; Viana, D. A.; Matos, M. G.; Rodrigues, F. R. N.; Pimentel, S. P.; Pessoa, A. W. P..
Dogs are usually friendly companions, being variably used by men for hunting, protecting, grazing, guiding or rescuing purposes, besides the worldwide known companion use as a pet. The man’s best friend behaves according to stimuli imposed by its tutor, being able to become aggressive and even attack when ordered. Yet, though behavioral deviances can occur, representing a rare portion of accidents with humans or other animals, it may be partially our fault in misunderstanding the given signals or, even misleading the dog to a stressful situation. While some cats and dogs get along well, others may not. In some cases, a dog might chase and attack a cat. Signs of aggression from a dog toward a cat represents an aggressive behavior sometimes induced by its...

Unraveling algae and cyanobacteria biodiversity in bromeliad phytotelmata in different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Ramos,Geraldo José Peixoto; Santana,Lucineide Maria; Medina,Anderson Matos; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos; Branco,Luis Henrique Zanini; Moura,Carlos Wallace do Nascimento.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii,...

UNRAVELING THE MOLECULES HIDDEN IN THE GRAY SHADOWS OF QUANTITATIVE DISEASE RESISTANCE TO PATHOGENS Acta biol.Colomb.
VÁSQUEZ,Andrea Ximena; SOTO SEDANO,Johana Carolina; LÓPEZ CARRASCAL,Camilo Ernesto.
ABSTRACT One of the most challenging questions in plant breeding and molecular plant pathology research is what are the genetic and molecular bases of quantitative disease resistance (QDR)?. The scarce knowledge of how this type of resistance works has hindered plant breeders to fully take advantage of it. To overcome these obstacles new methodologies for the study of quantitative traits have been developed. Approaches such as genetic mapping, identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) and association mapping, including candidate gene approach and genome wide association studies, have been historically undertaken to dissect quantitative traits and therefore to study QDR. Additionally, great advances in quantitative phenotypic data collection have been...
