Raman amplification in an optically high-powered data link dedicated to a 10 km long extension for submarine cabled observatories ArchiMer
Audo, F.; Perhirin, Steven; Quintard, V.; Guegan, Matthieu; Perennou, A.; Auffret, Yves.
We describe a quasi-all-optical extension dedicated to simplifying the deployment of submarine cabled observatories. Based on power-over-fiber technologies, high power supply and data are both transmitted in one optical fiber of a few kilometers in length. We study the Raman amplification on the down-and up-stream data in the static regime with the high optical power varying from 100 mW to 4 W over a 10 km long single-mode optical fiber. We focus on the data optical budget and signal to noise ratio dependence with respect to the high optical power value and the data optical wavelength. We also present the transmission quality in the dynamic regime of this quasi-all-optical extension.

Smart Sensor interface for sea bottom observatories ArchiMer
Del Rio, Joaquin; Auffret, Yves; Mihai Toma, Daniel; Shariat, Shahram; Andre, Xavier; Barbot, Stephane; Menut, Eric; Lenault, Yannick; Manuel, Antoni; Kassem Zein, Oussama; Champeau, Joel; Kerjean, Dominique.
In order to be able to use all the marine sensors currently available in the market, a new module has to be built to implement the smart sensor standard IEEE-1451 as well as other services used in marine measurements. The smart module is aimed to be used in ALL observatory configurations: autonomous, cabled and buoy-based observatories. This module can also be used for low power data acquisition and control applications in new instrument design such as Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) or any other instrument where data logging, clock synchronization, and plug and play capabilities are important. Therefore, the power consumption of the smart module has to be minimized for batteries based observatories and autonomous instruments.

Standardization prospective in ESONET NoE and a possible implementation on the ANTARES Site ArchiMer
Puillat, Ingrid; Person, Roland; Leveque, Claude; Drogou, Jean-francois; Diepenbroek, Michael; Garreau, Pierre; Waldmann, Christoph; Auffret, Yves.
ESONET is a Multidisciplinary European Network of Excellence (NoE) associating 50 partners from 14 countries and more than 300 scientists and engineers and dedicated to the lasting integration of research and development in deep sea observatories in Europe. Amongst other actions, it works at establishing seafloor infrastructure that will Provide platforms for instrumentation deployed throughout the water column and the geosphere below in a standard manner. Those platforms will provide power for instruments and real-time two-way data communications. This preparatory phase of observatory implementation is intended to select the most suitable standards in order to develop observatories that are interoperable between themselves and which would be able to...

The SAMBA experiment. Volume 1 : SAMBA 1 LAGRANGIAN and CTD DATA. February 1994 -August 1995 ArchiMer
Ollitrault, Michel; Auffret, Yves; Cortes, Norbert; Hemon, Catherine; Jegou, Paul; Le Reste, Serge; Loaec, Gerard; Rannou, Jean Philippe.
In February 1994, during the SAMBA 1 cruise, 9 CTD casts were done and 22 subsurface floats (20 MARVOR, 1 VCM, 1 ALFOS) launched near 800 dbar in the Brazil basin, within the framework of the SAMBA Experiment. SAMBA (SubAntartic Motions in the Brazil bAsin), is a component of the WOCE float program, and aims at describing the absolute general circulation of the Antarctic Intermediate Water around 800 m depth in the Brazil basin. MARVOR and ALFOS floats cycle every 2 months between thier nominal depth and surface to transmit data via the ARGOS system and were programmed for 30 cycles, i.e. a total life of 5 years. THE VCM float, on the other hand is a one shot RAFOS-type float which was programmed for a 1.5 year mission at depth. This report presents the...
