A lack of native congeners may limit colonization of introduced conifers by indigenous insects in Europe Inra

Le recrutement d’arthropodes phytophages par des conifers exotiques introduits en Europe sans congénères autochtones a été comparé à celui de conifères exotiques présentant des congénères natifs. En 130 ans de plantationsimportantes en Europe, le sapin de Douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) n’a recruté que 87 espèces d’arthropodes, soit seulement 33,9 % du total des 257 espèces qui y sont associées dans la zone d’origine. Les espèces exotiques de Cupressacées sans congénères natifs n’ont recruté que de 3,4 à 57,9 % autant d’espèces que dans leur zone native. Competition between exotic and native insects for seed resources in trees of a Mediterranean forest ecosystem Inra

The seeds of both cedar-of-Lebanon (Cedrus libani) and Cyprus cedar (Cedrus brevifolia) are attacked in their natural range by a specialised chalcid, Megastigmus schimitscheki. From 1995 to 1999, seeds were screened for insect damage in the main cedar plantations of southern France, as well as in the stands where cedar is mixed with firs (Abies spp.). X-rays were used to identify chalcid-infested seeds from which the insects were then reared. The surveys revealed the presence of M. schimitscheki in all the stands of Atlas cedar, Cedrus atlantica, planted at Mt Ventoux, southeastern France. A literature survey identified 403 primary research publications that investigated the ecological effects of invasive alien insects and/or the mechanisms underlying these effects. The majority of these studies were published in the last 8 years and nearly two-thirds were carried out in North America.These publications concerned 72 invasive insect species, of which two ant species, Solenopsis invicta and Linepithema humile, accounted for 18% and 14% of the studies, respectively.Most publications investigated effects on native biodiversity at population or community level. How can alien species inventories and interception data help us prevent insect invasions ? Inra

Information relevant to invasion processes and invasive alien insect species management in Central Europe was extracted from two databases: a compilation of two inventories of alien insects in Austria and Switzerland, and a list of interceptions of non indigenous plant pests in Europe gathered by the European and Mediterranean PlantProtection Organisation (EPPO) for the period 1995-2004. For one third of the insects established in Switzerland and Austria, the region of origin is unclear. Others come mainly from North America, Asia and the Mediterranean region. L'incendie pourrait-il constituer un mécanisme de régénération naturelle du genévrier thurifère par échappement aux ravageurs des graines ? L’exemple de la montagne de Rié (France) Inra

Seulement 1 à 3 espèces d’arthropodes ravageurs des galbules ont été observées dans les différents sites de Juniperus thurifera des Pyrénées françaises. Avant l'incendie ayant affecté la thuriféraie de la montagne de Rié à l'été 2003, les potentialités de régénération naturelle de ce peuplement par voie sexuée y étaient très réduites en raison de l'impact de l'acarien, Trisetacus quadrisetus et du chalcidien des graines, Megastigmus thuriferana. L'incendie a détruit une partie importante du peuplement mais a dans le même temps éliminé la majorité des ravageurs présents. Aucune floraison n'a été observée l'année suivant l'incendie (2004), contribuant ainsi à éliminer les ravageurs restants. En revanche, les relevés pratiqués en 2005 indiquent une forte...

Molecular systematics of seed chalcids of genus Megastigmus (Hymenoptera : Torymidae), related to junipers (Juniperus spp.) in the Mediterranean forest ecosystems Inra

Sur le pourtour du Bassin Méditerranéen, plusieurs espèces de chalcidiens du genre Megastigmus sont susceptibles d’attaquer les graines des diverses espèces de genévriers (Juniperus spp.). Parmi elles, deux espèces ont été identifiées selon des critères morphologiques classiques : M. bipunctatus,rencontrée en Europe le plus souvent sur J. communis et observée aussi sur J. thurifera, et M. amicorum, présente sur la plupart des genévriers méditerranéens. Une étude moléculaire, effectuée sur des individus appartenant aux deux espèces, a été réalisée par séquençage d’une partie du gène ducytochrome b de l’ADN mitochondrial. Potential invasion of China by exotic insect pests associated with tree seeds Inra

A total of 39 insect species, mostly seed chalcids in the genus Megastigmus (Hymenoptera), but also midges (Diptera), are listed as potential seed-borne invaders of Chinese conifers. Although the number of native seed insects per conifer genus does not differ between China and other biogeographical regions, there are significantly fewer seed insects associated with each conifer genus in China than potential invaders. The eventual success of the invaders is likely to depend on the presence of native Chinese conifers that are congeneric with the original host, or on the presence of the original host as an exotic. We present the identification of the sex pheromone in the pine sawfly, Gilpinia pallida, including analysis of the female pheromone content, male antennal response and attraction in the field, and synthesis of the most active pheromone component. Several 3,7-dimethyl-2-alkanols were identified from female whole-body extracts, including some compounds with a 2R configuration. This is the first observation of such compounds in a pine sawfly species.
