Banning is not enough: The complexities of oceanic shark management by tuna regional fisheries management organizations ArchiMer

Recently, declining populations of several pelagic shark species have led to global conservation concerns surrounding this group. As a result, a series of species-specific banning measures have been implemented by Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) in charge of tuna fisheries, which include retention bans, finning bans and trading bans. There are both positive and negative aspects to most management measures, but generally, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, ensuring the measure is beneficial to the resource and its users in the long term. Banning measures are a good first step towards the conservation of pelagic shark species, especially since they improve conservation awareness among fishers, managers and the public. Measures...

Effect of pelagic longline bait type on species selectivity: a global synthesis of evidence ArchiMer

Fisheries can profoundly affect bycatch species with ‘slow’ life history traits. Managing bait type offers one tool to control species selectivity. Different species and sizes of marine predators have different prey, and hence bait, preferences. This preference is a function of a bait’s chemical, visual, acoustic and textural characteristics and size, and for seabirds the effect on hook sink rate is also important. We conducted a global meta-analysis of existing estimates of the relative risk of capture on different pelagic longline baits. Despite bycatch of elasmobranch (sharks and rays) being a major concern in most fisheries worldwide, there is a lack of knowledge on their spatio-temporal species distribution, biology (life stage and sex-ratios), as well as their at-haulback mortality rate. Observer data from the French and Spanish tropical purse-seine tuna fisheries operating in the Eastern Atlantic and Western Indian Oceans between 2005 and 2017 were analysed to investigate elasmobranch bycatch. The objective of this project was to obtain scientific advice for the purpose of implementing the EUPOA on sharks as regards the facilitation of monitoring fisheries and shark stock assessment on a species-specific level in the high seas. The study was focused on major elasmobranch species caught by both artisanal and industrial large pelagic fisheries on the High Seas of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific area, which are currently monitored and potentially managed by respective Tuna RFMOs. Fine-scale vertical movements of oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) ArchiMer

Time series of depth data, obtained for 6 oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags, were analyzed in detail. The aim was to improve our knowledge of the vertical behavior of this species. Individuals were tagged in the Atlantic Ocean (n=5) and Indian Ocean (n=1) between 2011 and 2012. Deployment periods for these tags varied from 100 to 178 d. The sharks spent most of their time in the mixed layer, displaying the typical behavior of an epipelagic species. Un parc naturel marin a été créé le 22 février 2012 (décret n°2012-245), il s’agit du PNM des Glorieuses, qui dépend des îles Eparses et s’étend sur l’ensemble de la ZEE des Glorieuses. Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. Space-use hotspots of commercially valuable sharks and of internationally protected species had the highest overlap with longlines (up to 76% and 64%, respectively), and were also associated with significant increases in fishing effort. We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Fisheries observer programs represent the most reliable way to collect data on fisheries bycatch. However, their limited coverage leads to important data gaps that preclude bycatch mitigation at the basin scale. Habitat models developed from available fisheries observer programs offer a potential solution to fill these data gaps. Statistics of the French Purse Seine Fishing Fleet Targeting Tropical Tunas in the Indian Ocean (1981-2018) ArchiMer

In 2018, a total of 14 French vessels operated in the eastern Indian Ocean including 12 purse seiners and 2 supplies. The total capacity weighted by the months of activity for each vessel is 11686t. The total nominal effort in 2018 was of 2885 fishing days and 2723 sets with 2463 sets on floating objects and 260 on free schools. In 2018, the percentage of sets on FOB was 90% and the catches reached 91%. The total catch of the French component of the EU purse seine fleet of the Indian Ocean was 84,729 t, being composed of 36%, 58%, and 6% of yellowfin tuna, skipjack tuna, and bigeye tuna respectively. Pour ce qui concerne la France (excluant Mayotte), trois flottilles ont des activités de pêche thonière dans l'océan Indien : - les senneurs opérant pour l’essentiel à partir des Seychelles et de l’Ile Maurice, - les palangriers basés à La Réunion, et à un moindre degré la petite pêche réunionnaise. - La flottille thonière française à la senne exerçant dans l’océan Indien atteint 8 navires en 2013 et ses capture se sont élevées à 39 958 tonnes, soit un niveau légèrement supérieur à celui de 2012 (37 155 t) avec une légère augmentation de l’effort de pêche (2 291 jours de pêche en 2013 et 1 944 jours en 2012). Updated standardized CPUE of blue shark bycaught by the French Reunion-based pelagic longline fishery (2007-2020) ArchiMer

The blue shark Prionace glauca is the main bycatch species of the French swordfish-targeting longline fishery operating in the south-west Indian Ocean. Using observer and self-reported data collected aboard commercial longliners between 2007 and 2020, we propose a standardized CPUE series for blue shark for this fishery estimated with a lognormal generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to be used for the upcoming stock assessment. We propose to use the standardized CPUE for the period comprised between 2011 and 2020 where the monitoring effort has been consequent in comparison with previous years. Throughout 2011-2020, the standardized CPUE for the blue shark shows a significant decreasing trend.
