Confirming the Price Effects of Private Labels Development 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Orozco, Valerie; Requillart, Vincent.
We study the price response of national brands to the development of private labels. We use monthly data from a consumer survey reporting their purchases for 218 food products. We show that when private labels have a significant effect on national brands prices (144 cases over 218), that is positive (89%). We also show that the increase in the prices of national brand products is explained by a strategy of product differentiation. Finally, price reaction of national brands differs with the type of private labels they are facing. This paper confirms, on a larger number of products, previous empirical results.

DYNAMICS AND UNCERTAINTY IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT UNDER SCARCITY: THE CASE OF IRRIGATION 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Couture, Stephane.
The objective of this paper is to study the problem of management of irrigation water. We analyse farmers' economic rules of tactical irrigation scheduling in a certain or uncertain environment under water scarcity. The optimal plans depend on uncertain weather conditions and expectations. We develop a dynamic economic model of irrigation water applications under certain or uncertain weather conditions and in the context of a limited total quantity of water. We program this economic model, introducing the agronomic model EPIC, which is used to obtain information on the crop yield. The model is used to explain the optimal irrigation management plan of corn in the area of Toulouse (France). This model improves water management and leads to substantial...

Firm Survival and Quality Labels in the Food Industry 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Bouamra-Mechemache, Zohra; Simioni, Michel.
Both industry and firm characteristics influence the survival of a firm in an industry over time. Aging, size, structure are factors often discussed in the literature, but public intervention effects -through public quality labeling for example - may also have an effect that is examined here. We use data on French firms producing cheese under public quality label or not over the period 1990-2006. We perform a nonparametric estimation using Kaplan-Meier estimators as well as proportional hazard rate models. Our results confirm existing findings on firm survival determinants. We also shed light on the effect of public intervention into that industry. More precisely, our focus on public quality labeling in the French cheese industry shows that quality label...

Food Safety Regulation and Firm Productivity: Evidence from the French Food Industry 31
Requillart, Vincent; Nauges, Celine; Simioni, Michel; Bontemps, Christophe.
The purpose of this article is to assess whether food safety regulations imposed by the European Union in the 2000s may have induced a slow-down in the productivity of firms in the food processing sector. The impact of regulations on costs and productivity has seldom been studied. This article contributes to the literature by measuring productivity change using a panel of French food processing firms for the years 1996 to 2006. To do so, we develop an original iterative testing procedure based on the comparison of the distribution of efficiency scores of a set of firms. Our results confirm that productivity decreased in the poultry processing industry at the time when safety regulation was reinforced.

Hedonic Housing Prices and Agricultural Pollution: An Empirical Investigation on Semiparametric Models 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Simioni, Michel; Surry, Yves R..
Many empirical studies challenged the parametric approach to estimate nonlinear house price models and to use instead nonparametric or semiparametric model specifications. In the area of environmental analysis using house price models, Stock (1991) and McMillen and Thorsen (2000) applied semi-parametric models to estimate the impact of hazardous wastes on house prices. Furthermore, estimating nonparametricaly house price models is gaining now additional momentum because Ekeland et al. (2002) provided a theoretical justification to use such an empirical approach to estimate hedonic price models. The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of agricultural pollution in a livestock intensive region of France using alternative non-parametric and...

Hedonic Housing Prices and Agricultural Pollution: An Empirical Investigation on Semiparametric Models 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Simioni, Michel; Surry, Yves R..
The objective of this paper is to assess the impact on property values of agricultural pollution using alternative semiparametric hedonic price models. The proposed model specifications are made up of two parts: a partially linear component for house characteristics and a non (semi) parametric form to represent the non linear influence of agricultural pollution. A general-to-specific search procedure is adopted to select the best model specification. An application of theses parametric models to rural townships indicates that pollution resulting on livestock operations have a significant nonlinear impact on house prices.

IS THE IRRIGATION WATER DEMAND REALLY CONVEX? 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Couture, Stephane; Favard, Pascal.
The seasonal irrigation water demand under uncertainty, which lies at the core of this paper, is still very roughly known. We know, however, that irrigated agriculture accounts for a large proportion of water use, especially in many water-scarce areas. In this paper, we estimate the irrigation water demand, for various climatic conditions characterizing the distribution of the necessarily stochastic, demand functions under uncertainty. We use a dynamic programming model to represent the farmer's decision program under uncertainty. A crop-growth simulation model (EPIC-PHASE), provides the response function to the decisions taken and climatic events and is linked to a CRRA utility function representing the farmer's objective function. This model is used...

Nonparametric vs parametric binary choice models: An empirical investigation 31
Bontemps, Christophe; Racine, Jeffrey S.; Simioni, Michel.
The estimation of conditional probability distribution functions (PDFs) in a kernel nonparametric framework has recently received attention. As emphasized by Hall, Racine and Li (2004), these conditional PDFs are extremely useful for a range of tasks including modelling and predicting consumer choice. The aim of this paper is threefold. First, we implement nonparametric kernel estimation of PDF with a binary choice variable and both continuous and discrete explanatory variables. Second, we address the issue of the performances of this nonparametric estimator when compared to a classic on-the-shelf parametric estimator, namely a probit. We propose to evaluate these estimators in terms of their predictive performances, in the line of the recent "revealed...
