Recently a fairly large number of teeth of the sperm whale were acquired for the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historic These teeth were picked out from an extensive material of sperm whale teeth collected in the Antarctic region and preserved by the whalers for their commercial value. Together with Dr. A. B. van Deinse at Rotterdam the author spent two days in selecting from the available material those specimens which showed peculiarities of some kind so that they might prove interesting for further examination. I want to thank Dr. Van Deinse here for his kind help in saving so many peculiar specimens for scientific purposes. Double teeth of the sperm whale are not unknown, but as far as I am aware only two instances have been described,... |

After a prolonged scrutiny of numerous colonies of Millepora in the collections of various museums I found, besides a number of colonies with open ampullae, ten specimens possessing ampullae with their coverings of a trabecular network. The chief details of these ampullae were described in a previous paper (Boschma, 1949 a). Afterwards I had the good fortune to obtain material of different species of Millepora from six localities showing ampullae in an undamaged state. These ampullae are figured and described in the present paper. I am greatly indebted to Mr. Harold Gatty of Suva, who enabled me to visit coral reefs in the Fiji Islands during the time I stayed in this locality (March, 1949). I want to thank Dr. C. H. Edmondson, curator, Bernice P. Bishop... |

Moseley (1880, pp. 83-88) published a "List of all the Species of Stylasteridae at present known", remarking that this list is not to be regarded as constituting a revision of the species, but represents an attempt to draw attention to all the species of which an account has been published. This list, which was prepared with the assistance of Dr. F. Brüggemann, of the British Museum, contains sixty species, arranged in twelve genera. The present list contains about one hundred described species of Stylasterina in addition to those mentioned by Moseley. Here again the genera are arranged according to the apparently natural system, while within each genus the species are placed in alphabetical order, an arbitrary arrangement being indicated because generally... |

Certain Rhizocephalan parasites of the crabs Xanthias lamarcki (H. M. E.), Lybia tesselata (Latr.), and Glyptoxanthus vermiculatus (Lam.) mutually so closely correspond in all their characters that undoubtedly they belong to the same species. When the characters of this species are defined it appears that these practically correspond with the characters of Sacculina carpiliae Guér.-Gan. There are slight differences, not easily to define, and consequently not fit for a distinct specific description. Provisionally, therefore, the parasites of the crabs mentioned above are regarded as belonging to Sacculina carpiliae. The present paper contains notes on some specimens which undoubtedly belong to Sacculina carpiliae (parasites of Carpilius convexus (Rüpp.)),... |

I. Introduction. When using here the name Hydrocorallia for a group of corals, it is not intended to regard this group as a recognized systematic unit. Since Moseley (1880) placed the Stylasteridae with the Milleporidae in the Hydrocorallinae, a separate sub-order of the Hydroids, it has been sufficiently pointed out that the families Milleporidae and Stylasteridae have little in common, and that their respective relations are with Hydroids of systematically different groups. Broch (1914) maintains that the family Milleporidae traces its origin to that of the Corynidae, whilst in his opinion the family Stylasteridae is a highly specialized group that has been derived from the Bougainvilliidae. Stechow (1923) came to the same conclusion, he also placed the... |

The following notes are based upon material of parasites on two Crustaceans from Japan, viz., Pachygrapsus crassipes Randall and Petrolisthes japonicus de Haan 1). Each of these two species may be infested by two different species of Rhizocephala: on Pachygrapsus crassipes occur the parasites Sacculina rotundata and S. confragosa, whilst Petrolisthes japonicus may be infested by the two species of Lernaeodiscus (cornutus and okadai) described in the present paper. I want to express my thanks to Professor Yaichiro Okada of Tokyo Normal College who collected a great deal of the material dealt with in the present paper at the sea shore near the Marine Biological Laboratory at Shimoda. During the work of the Ecological Survey of the University of Cape Town a few Crustacea of various groups were collected which proved to be infested with Rhizocephalan parasites. Remarks on one of these, a parasite of Galathea dispersa Bate, are given in the present paper, while notes are added on the data from the literature and on the structure of some other specimens 1). The Rhizocephala occurring as parasites of species of the genus Galathea belong to the genera Triangulus and Lernaeodiscus (family Lernaeodiscidae) or to the genus Galatheascus (family Peltogastridae). Moreover, one species of the genus Sacculina is known as a parasite of a Galathea, while Parthenopea subterranea Kossmann, a species usually infesting Callianassa, has been reported as a... |

In the collections brought together by Dr. L. B. Holthuis during a visit to Australia there is a specimen of the crab Pilumnopeus serratifrons (Kinahan) bearing the Rhizocephalan parasite Loxothylacus spinulosus Boschma. The locality of the type specimen of this parasite was mentioned as "Pacific Ocean" (Boschma, 1928, p. 172) ; in all probability it was collected in the region of the East coast of Australia, because the crab Pilumnopeus serratifrons is known from this region only. The new record gives occasion to restrict the type locality of Loxothylacus spinulosus to Mosman, Sydney, New South Wales. Examination of the specimen showed that it corresponds in all essential characters with the type specimen, while a parasite of the crab Glabropilumnus... |

In a previous paper (Boschma, 1933 b) descriptions were given of 22 species of Rhizocephala in the collection of the United States National Museum. In the cited paper especially attention was given to the details of the external and the internal cuticle, the data concerning the structure of the male organs and the colleteric glands were briefly described but not figured. The measurements of the type specimens were noted but no description was given of the shape of the animals. In a later paper (Boschma, 1937) some more details were described of the male organs and the colleteric glands of the specimens belonging to the genus Sacculina, but these structures up till now remain imperfectly known in the specimens belonging to other genera of the group. To... |

For many years the species problem in the Sacculinidae has been a matter of controversies. Kossmann's (1872) paper was of fundamental importance, because in his descriptions of a great number of new species, chiefly from the Philippine Islands, he derived the specific characters from the anatomical peculiarities as well as from the excrescences of the external cuticle. Later investigators for many years dealt with European material only, in which specific characters are far less apparent than in tropical Sacculinidae, so that their opinions concerning specific differences were often based on principles instead of on facts. This applies to the papers by Giard and Bonnier (Giard, 1886, 1887, 1888; Bonnier, 1887; Giard & Bonnier, 1887, 1890), in which the... |

For a large part the data in the present paper are based on manuscript notes in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, assembled by Brongersma himself; they form only a brief account of his scientific achievements. Efforts to completeness were only made in the composition of the List of Publications; here besides the scientific papers those with popular contents are listed. Thanks are due to Dr. W. Vervoort and to Dr. M. Boeseman for constructive remarks. Leo Daniël Brongersma was born on May 17th, 1907, at Bloemendaal (province of North-Holland); here he attended elementary school, while he went to high school in the neighbouring town of Haarlem. From 1925 to 1931 he studied zoology, botany and geology at the Municipal University of... |

One of the specimens dealt with in the present paper has been described in previous papers, in which it appeared under three different names, all of which for different reasons eventually proved to be erroneous. The present identification as Sacculina cordata Shiino at last seems to be definite. The second specimen, as the first from the material collected by the Siboga Expedition, belongs to the species Sacculina papposa V. K. & B., of which up till now the type specimen only was known; the parasite dealt with here is interesting because the excrescences of its external cuticle are of a structure slightly different from that of the corresponding parts in the type; moreover, in this specimen retinacula were found, yielding an additional character for... |

Among the material brought together in the West Indies by Dr P. Wagenaar Hummelinck there are some coral colonies of the genus Tubastraea that are interesting from various points of view, in the first place because this genus of Madreporaria has but recently become known to occur in the West Indies. Vaughan & Wells (1943, p. 239) note as range of distribution of the genus Panamá, Indo-Pacific, Gulf of Guinea, and the West Indies. As I did not succeed in finding data in the previous literature on the occurrence of Tubastraea in the West Indian area, I wrote to Dr J. W. Wells, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, who kindly informed me that the statement given above was based on otherwise unpublished recent finds of material from off Puerto Rico, whilst... |

From time to time crabs have been found in localities at great distances from their normal area of distribution, owing to their being transported by ships in ballast water tanks or on the hulls. Much attention has been paid to a report by Catta (1876), who examined the Crustacea taken from the hull of a ship that had made the voyage from India to Marseilles. Among these, four species of crabs of the family Grapsidae were represented, one of which, named by him Plagusia squamosa, being present in hundreds of specimens. Catta saw here the possibility of an extension of the area of distribution of the crab, but apparently the conditions of life were not favourable in the new locality, and the crab did not become established here. Stebbing (1893: 99) remarks... |

It is a well-known fact that in many species of reef-corals the form of different colonies is largely subject to external influences that affected it during its growth. Not only in different colonies is this variability found, but also parts of the same colony may offer a striking contrast when compared with one another. One of the causes that modify the growth-form of various colonies of reef-corals, especially of the branching ones, is the action of the waves that roll in upon the reef after they have been more or less dissolved at the edge. These waves constantly sweep over the tops of the coral-colonies so as to prevent them to grow in height above a certain level. Together with the larger colonies whose tops are constantly in contact with the waves... |
