The availability of a rapid method to evaluate the soil water content (U) can be an important tool to determine the moment to irrigate. The soil areometer consists of an elongated hydrostatic balance with a weighing pan, a graduated neck, a float and a pynometric flask. In this work an areometer was adapted to rapidly measure soil water content without the need of drying the soil. The expression U = (M A - M AD)/(M M -M A) was used to calculate the soil water content. The wall perimeter fraction, which contact neighboring cells, was named compression ratio (alpha). A zero compression ratio indicates maximum intercellular (air) volume (vG, v/v) and neglectable contact among cells, while alpha=1 indicates complete adherence between neighboring cells and no vG in the lattice. The maximum intercellular air volume (beta, v/v), when alpha=0, was 0.593 for triangular, 0.2146 for square and 0,0931 for hexagonal lattices. The equation alpha=1- (vG/beta)½ was derived to relate alpha, beta and vG in the studied lattices. The relation (P S=p/alpha) between cell turgor (P S) and the tissue aggregating pressure (p), defined as the compression to keep in place a layer of cells, was demonstrated using the compression ratio concept.... |

Alterações pós-colheita no amadurecimento dos frutos de Mauritia vinifera (buriti), colhidos com coloração marrom clara, foram estudadas acompanhando-se: massa, volumes gasosos intercelulares, concentração de CO2 e O2 na atmosfera interna, firmeza e as evoluções de CO2 e etileno, tanto a 25 ºC quanto sob baixa temperatura (8 ºC). Os frutos apresentaram injúria de resfriamento quando armazenados a 8 ºC e não amadureceram ao serem retornados para 25 ºC. Sob umidade elevada, baixa transpiração, a conservação do buriti triplicou em comparação com os frutos armazenados em ambiente menos úmido (65 a 85%). Objetivou-se avaliar algumas das mudanças fisiológicas ocorridas durante o processo de amadurecimento pós-colheita dos frutos de Syagrus oleracea (gueroba), palmeira nativa da região Centro-Oeste brasileira, tais como: a perda de massa, volumes gasosos intercelulares, a concentração interna de CO2 e de O2 e a firmeza, as evoluções de CO2 e etileno tanto à temperatura ambiente (25 ºC) quanto à baixa temperatura (8 ºC). Para as análises foram utilizados frutos verdes desta palmeira, coletados no campus da Universidade de Brasília (UnB). Os frutos da gueroba se mostraram sensíveis à injúria por resfriamento. In the present work one determined the threshold pile height below which cracking and other deformations do not occur in products with low apparent density such as lettuce, collard greens and bell pepper. Initially the threshold pile height was sought applying decreasing compression stresses equivalent to pile loads of 160, 120 and 80 cm, with four replicates in four hour assays. The safe threshold pile height which protects the products against cracking rupture in these three commodities were of 80 cm.
