Avaliação do Metabolismo Nutricional em Poedeiras pela Técnica dos Isótopos Estáveis do Ccarbono (13C/12C) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Carrijo,AS; Pezzato,AC; Ducatti,C.

Histomorphology of bursa of Fabricius: effects of stock densities on commercial broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Muniz,EC; Fascina,VB; Pires,PP; Carrijo,AS; Guimarães,EB.
During the past few years, there has been considerable interest on the effects of stocking density on broiler behavior and immunity. Stress may cause immunodeficiency by affecting cell and humoral responses, as well as body weight decrease, and foot-pad dermatitis. The aim of this study was to study histomorphological changes of the bursa of Fabricius in broilers submitted to three different stocking densities (10, 15, and 20 birds/m²) from one to 42 days of age. Three birds from each group were sacrifieced on days 7 and 42. The bursa was collected, fixed, and processed for histomorphometric assessment using a Kontrom KS 400 image analyzer. Data were analyzed by Biostat 3.0 (Tukey Test). The results of average cortical area percentage in bursal follicles...

Production aspects of broiler breeders submitted to different drinker types Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Colvero,LP; Carrijo,AS; Garófallo,RG; Bernardi,R; Steffen,RPB; Stefanello,C.
The objective of this study was of evaluate the influence of different drinker types on the egg production, water intake, mortality, poultry litter relative humidity, egg weight, eggshell percentage, and egg specific gravity of broiler breeders. The experiment was carried out in a commercial farm with 37- to 44-wk-old broiler breeders. A randomized block experimental design, consisting of two treatments (bell or nipple drinkers) with four replicates of 4.000 females each, was applied. Data were submitted to analysis of variance, and means were compared by the test of Student-Newman-Keuls at 5% significance level. Birds submitted to nipple drinkers presented lower water intake (p<0.05). There was no influence (p>0.05) of drinker type on egg...

Soybean Oil and Beef Tallow in Starter Broiler Diets Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Fascina,VB; Carrijo,AS; Souza,KMR; Garcia,AML; Kiefer,C; Sartori,JR.
The objective of this study was to determine the energy values of soybean oil (SBO) and tallow (T) combined in different ratios, and to evaluate their effects on the performance, body composition, and serum lipid levels of starter broilers. In experiment I, a digestibility trial was performed to determine the energy value of the SOB and T mixtures using 100 12 - to 21 -day-old broilers. In experiment II, 930 one-day-old broilers were used. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of 4% SBO and T inclusions at the following ratios: 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0. Each treatment included six replicates. In experiment I, AME and AMEn linearly increased (P<0.01), as SBO participation in the mixture increased. In experiment II, the different lipid ratios...

Studies on carbon-13 turnover in eggs and blood of commercial layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Denadai,JC; Ducatti,C; Pezzato,AC; Carrijo,AS; Caldara,FR; Oliveira,RP.
This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of diets containing different isotopic values of carbon-13 turnover on the half-life of egg (yolk + albumen), yolk and albumen individually, and blood of poultry using delta‰13C isotopic variation. Commercial layers fed four experimental isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets (RC4, RC3, RMC4 and RMC3) containing different isotopic values, during an experimental period of 56 days. Turnover of the studied tissues was influenced by the experimental diets. Blood and albumen were more influenced by dietary treatments as compared to egg and yolk. The RMC3 diet induced better performance (better feed intake and higher egg production) due faster rate of carbon substitution than the RC4 diet, and lower half-life for egg...

Traceability of bovine meat and bone meal in poultry by stable isotope analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Carrijo,AS; Pezzato,AC; Ducatti,C; Sartori,JR; Trinca,L; Silva,ET.
Bovine meat and bone meal (MBM) was widely used in animal diets until outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encefalopathy (BSE) occurred in some countries. It has not been confirmed yet whether or not BSE may be transmitted to man through chicken meat originated from poultry that had been fed diets containing MBM. Therefore, consumers nowadays express preference for meat originated from birds fed exclusively vegetable diets. This study analyzed samples of major breast muscle (Pectoralis major) using mass spectrometry of stable isotopes (carbon and nitrogen) as a means to assess the presence of MBM in broiler diets, a technique that might be used in the certification of poultry quality. A total of 150 day-old chicks were reared in five randomized treatments with...

Traceability of poultry offal meal in broiler feeding using isotopic analysis (δ13C and δ15N) of different tissues Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Oliveira,RP; Ducatti,C; Pezzato,AC; Denadai,JC; Cruz,VC; Sartori,JR; Carrijo,AS; Caldara,FR.
Our goal was to trace the inclusion of poultry offal meal (OM) in diets by using carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) isotopic ratios of different tissues in order to contribute for the development of an independent technology for the certification of the feeding of broilers reared on diets with no addition of animal ingredients. Eighty one-day-old chicks were randomly distributed into five experimental treatments, that is, diets containing increasing levels of OM inclusion (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16% OM), with four replicates of four birds each. At 42 days of age, four birds per treatment (n=4) were randomly selected, weighed, and sacrificed to collect breast muscle (Pectoralis major), keel and tibia samples to determine their isotopic ratios (13C/12C e...
