Cranial Osteology of the Armadillo Chaetophractus villosus (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) International Journal of Morphology
Squarcia,Silvia Margarita; Sidorkewicj,Nora Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The morphology and morphometry of the cranial bones of Chaetophractus villosus were studied. The skull components are morphologically similar between adults of both sexes, and follow the generalized pattern for most of described dasypodids. The morphometric analysis, however, demonstrated that the bones lying in the rostrocaudal plane are mostly longest in females, determining higher values of the total, basal and condilobasal lengths of the skull, which are the main variables that contribute to a sexual dimorphism in this species

HISTOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE SALIVARY GLANDS IN Dasypus hybridus (MAMMALIA, DASYPODIDAE) International Journal of Morphology
Codón,Stella Maris; Estecondo,Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The histology of the salivary glands of the armadillo Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804), was studied. Two pairs of salivary glands, parotid and submaxillary, and a salivary bladder are distinguished. Parotids are located anteriorly to the submaxillary glands. They are purely serous glands and excretory intralobular ducts, intercalated and particularly striated ones, are very numerous. Submaxillary glands are of greater size. They possess two lobes, which differs in their histology and histochemistry. The anterior lobe is mixed and the presence of numerous intralobular excretory ducts is remarkable. The bigger posterior lobe is mucous. Intralobular excretory ducts are observed, but they are not as abundant as in the anterior portion

Histological Study of the Salivary Glands in Zaedyus pichiy (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) International Journal of Morphology
Estecondo,Silvia; Codón,Stella Maris; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The histology of the salivary glands of the armadillo Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) was studied. Three pairs of major compound tubuloacinar salivary glands, parotid, submandibular and sublingual, were distinguished. The parotid gland is histologically a serous gland. The submandibular gland consists of two lobes. The anterior lobe is composed of mixed and serous acini. The posterior lobe is predominantly mucous. There is a reservoir or salivary bladder, related with the anterior lobe. The sublingual gland is mixed, composed of mucous acini with scattered serous demilunes

Methods for Estimating the Volume of the Tympanic Bulla in the Big Hairy Armadillo Chaetophractus villosus (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) International Journal of Morphology
Basso,Ana Paula; Sidorkewicj,Nora Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
Two methods of measurement of bullar dimensions (callipers and scaling from digital images) and subsequent application of four volume formulae (rectangular prism, cylinder, ellipse and elliptical cone) were tested to find the most appropriate non-destructive method for estimating the bullar volume in Chaetophractus villosus. Material for the study consisted in clean adult skull (n=22). Real volume was obtained from latex casts of the tympanic bulla. Each estimation was corrected by a factor based on the differences between the estimated and the real volumes. Highest accuracy (5-7 % of underestimation) and precision (coefficient of variation: 13.27 %) were obtained from callipers and application of rectangular prism, cylinder and ellipse formulae. The...

Morphology and Histological Annual Changes of the Oviduct of Chaetophractus villosus (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) International Journal of Morphology
Codón,Stella Maris; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The morphological features of the oviduct in the armadillo Chaetophractus villosus (Desmarest, 1804) were studied. In the simple columnar epithelium, ciliated cells, secretory cells, and cells of the bottom of the folds are described. The most remarkable findings are the increase in number of ciliated cells, when present, from the fimbriae to the uterus, being the isthmus practically lined by ciliated cells, and that secretory cells are more abundant in the apical zone of the ampulla and fimbriae, than in the isthmus. Morphological changes along the year in the different portions are described.

The Hypertrophy of the Tympanic Bulla in Three Species of Dasypodids (Mammalia, Xenarthra) from Argentina International Journal of Morphology
Squarcia,Silvia Margarita; Sidorkewicj,Nora Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The morphology and relative size of the tympanic bulla of three species of dasypodids from Argentina, Chaetophractus villosus, C. vellerosus and Zaedyus pichiy, were studied. The bulla was observed to be morphologically similar and evidently hypertrophied in the three species. The degree of hypertrophy was higher in C. vellerosus and C. villosus than in Z pichiy. By means of ANCOVA it was clear that, although C. villosus has a bigger skull than C. vellerosus, the relative size of their tympanic cavity was similar in both species. On the other hand, the skull of C. vellerosus and Z pichiy are of similar size but the bulla was relatively shorter in the later
