A Simple and High-yield Synthesis of Hexadecyl Ferulate and Its In Vitro Antioxidant Potential BABT
Nadal,Jessica; Pedroso,Flávia de B.; Minozzo,Bruno Rodrigo; Brito,Priscilla Salles de; Farago,Paulo Vitor; Vellosa,José Carlos Rebuglio; Miyoshi,Edmar.
ABSTRACT Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound with well-known antioxidant potential that can be used as a promising anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer molecule. Furthermore, it has been reported to have neuroprotective activity. One of the main problems, which limit its clinical use, is its low bioavailability when administered orally. This limitation can be circumvented by changes in their structure and/or for preparing lipid-based formulations. The aim of this study was to synthesize a derivative of FA, the hexadecyl ferulate (HF). This compound would be more susceptible to pass through blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to its lipophilic character. The HF was obtained by Steglich esterification and yielded 76.77 ± 1.35%. Its structural characterization...

A simple HPLC method for the determination of halcinonide in lipid nanoparticles: development, validation, encapsulation efficiency, and in vitro drug permeation BJPS
Lopes,Clarissa Elize; Langoski,Gisele; Klein,Traudi; Ferrari,Priscileila Colerato; Farago,Paulo Vitor.
ABSTRACT Halcinonide is a high-potency topical glucocorticoid used for skin inflammation treatments that presents toxic systemic effects. A simple and quick analytical method to quantify the amount of halcinonide encapsulated into lipid nanoparticles, such as polymeric lipid-core nanoparticles and solid lipid nanoparticles, was developed and validated regarding the drug's encapsulation efficiency and in vitro permeation. The development and validation of the analytical method were carried out using the high performance liquid chromatography with the UV detection at 239 nm. The validation parameters were specificity, linearity, precision and accuracy, limits of detection and quantitation, and robustness. The method presented an isocratic flow rate of 1.0...

Anatomical Characters of Leave and Stem of Calea serrata Less., Asteraceae BABT
Camilotti,Júlia Gabriela; Biu,Ciane Costa; Farago,Paulo Vitor; Santos,Vera Lúcia Pereira dos; Franco,Celia Regina Cavichiolo; Budel,Jane Manfron.
The genus Calea belongs to the tribe Heliantheae and presents about 125 species. Calea serrata, popularly known as erva-de-cobra, chá-amargo and quebra-tudo, is an endemic species found in southern Brazil and is used in traditional medicine to treat ulcers and livers problems. The present work aimed to study the pharmacobotanical characters of leaves and stems of C. serrata for quality control purposes. The plant material was processed according to standard methods of light and scanning electron microscopy. Glandular capitate-stalked and capitate-sessile, uniseriate multicellular non-glandular trichome with tapered apical cell, conical non-glandular trichome, isobilateral mesophyll, secretory ducts near the endoderm and circular shape with six ribs in the...

Characterization and Cytotoxic Evaluation of Silver and Gold Nanoparticles Produced with Aqueous Extract of Lavandula dentata L. in Relation to K-562 Cell Line BABT
Justus,Barbara; Arana,Andrés Fernando Montenegro; Gonçalves,Melissa Marques; Wohnrath,Karen; Boscardin,Patrícia Mathias Döll; Kanunfre,Carla Cristine; Budel,Jane Manfron; Farago,Paulo Vitor; Paula,Josiane de Fátima Padilha de.
Abstract Metallic nanoparticles have great potential as a chemotherapeutic agent. The aim of this study was to develop and characterize silver and gold nanoparticles using a simple method, as well as evaluating the potential cytotoxic activity in relation to the K-562 cell line. For the synthesis, a solution containing the metallic ions was subjected to magnetic stirring with the aqueous extract of Lavandula dentata L. and a change of colour was observed. With the data obtained from the analyses we concluded that the nanoparticles were successfully obtained by a simple and green method using the aqueous extract of L. dentata. The obtained nanoparticles presented a reduced size, a low level of polydispersion, and a homogenous spherical shape. The...

Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of The Essential Oil And Anatomical Markers Of Lavandula Dentata L. Cultivated In Brazil BABT
Justus,Barbara; Almeida,Valter Paes de; Gonçalves,Melissa Marques; Assunção,Daniele Priscila da Silva Fardin de; Borsato,Debora Maria; Arana,Andres Fernando Montenegro; Maia,Beatriz Helena Lameiro Noronha Sales; Paula,Josiane de Fátima Padilha de; Budel,Jane Manfron; Farago,Paulo Vitor.
ABSTRACT Lavandula dentata, popularly known as lavender, is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of digestive and inflammatory disorders. The objective of this study was to analyzed the chemical oil composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil and anatomical markers of the leaf and stem of L. dentata cultivated in South Brazil. Essential oil showed an antioxidant activity similar to rutin and gallic acid when analyzed by phosphomolybdenum method. However, by the free radical DPPH and ABTS methods, it showed a slight potential antioxidant. Essential oil presented 1,8-cineol (63%) as major component, antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria strains and Candida albicans, by broth...

Development and characterization of hyaluronic acid-lysine nanoparticles with potential as innovative dermal filling BJPS
Carneiro,Jaqueline; Döll-Boscardin,Patrícia Mathias; Fiorin,Bárbara Celânia; Nadal,Jessica Mendes; Farago,Paulo Vitor; Paula,Josiane Padilha de.
ABSTRACT Skin aging causes changes such as wrinkles and flaccidity leading to a large demand for aesthetic procedures, including dermal filling. A key agent in dermal filling is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan. However, it is a hydrophilic macromolecule that experiences great difficulty in crossing the skin barrier causing most commercial formulations containing it to be injectable, which in turn brings risks since they involve an invasive technique. In that sense, the aim of this study was to develop and characterize nanoparticles obtained from ionic interaction between HA and lysine (Lys) for use as a potential agent of dermal filling for topical application, increasing and improving its applicability and safety. To...
