10. Wissenschaftstagung Ökologischer Landbau Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Dubois, David; Fried, Padruot; van der Heijden, Marcel; Kreuzer, Michael; Lüscher, Andreas; Mayer, Jochen; Strasser, Fredi; Willer, Helga; Zerger, Uli.

Organic Eprints
Dorn, Brigitte; Musa, Tomke; Krebs, Heinz; Fried, Padruot; Forrer, Hans-Rudolf.
In laboratory, growth chamber, micro-plot and small-plot field trials, 53 copper-free preparations (CFPs) were examined for their potential to control potato late blight (PLB) caused by Phytophthora infestans (PI). In-vitro, 43% of the CFP inhibited the germination of sporangia or the mycelial growth of the pathogen completely. In growth chamber trials, 21% of them reduced PI foliar blight of tomato seedlings by at least 80%. In contrast, in small-plot field trials with potatoes under practice like applications, none of the CFPs sufficiently controlled the disease. Even in micro-plot field trials with applications twice a week the efficacies did not exceed 60%. With in-vitro tests we showed that the reason for the insufficient performance of the...

Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Fried, Padruot; Niggli, Urs.
An understanding of agroecosystems is a key to determining effective farming systems. Here we report results from a 21-year study of agronomic and ecological performance of biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional farming systems in Central Europe. We found crop yields to be 20% lower in the organic systems, although input of fertilizer and energy was reduced by 34 to 53% and pesticide input by 97%. Enhanced soil fertility and higher biodiversity found in organic plots may render these systems less dependent on external inputs.
