A collection of Decapod Crustacea from Sumba, Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The Sumba-Expedition undertaken by Dr. E . Sutter of the Naturhistorisches Museum of Basle and Dr. A . Bühler of the Museum für Völkerkunde of the same town, visited the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, in 1949. Dr. Sutter, the zoologist, stayed in the islands from 19 May to 26 November; most of the time was spent by him in Sumba (21 May-31 October), and extensive collections were made there, among which a most interesting material of Decapod Crustacea, which forms the subject of the present paper. A few Crustacea were collected on the islands of Sumbawa (on 19 May) and Flores (19 and 21 November). The animals taken at Flores belong to species also obtained in Sumba and will be treated here with those; at Sumbawa two hermit crabs belonging to the species...

A first contribution to our knowledge of the flora of the Talaud Islands and Morotai Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Lam, H.J..
The Talaud Islands are forming part of the Malay Archipelago, being situated north of Celebes and the Moluccas, south of Mindanao and east of the Sangihe group, between 3°45’ and 5°35’ N. lat. and 126°32’ and 127°10’ E. long. The main group consists of three larger islands, viz. Karakelong, Salebaboe and Kaboeroeang. The Nenoesa islands, a group formed by the small islands of Garete, Karaton, Merampi, Mengkopoe, Intata, Kakelotan and Maroh are situated northeast of the main group, including also Miangas (Palmas), an islet about 65 miles north of Karakelong, near Mindanao.

A new cavernicolous freshwater crab from New Guinea (Crustacea Decapoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Through the kindness of Mr. Philip Chapman of Culford, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, it was made possible for me to examine a male and a female of a species of cavernicolous crab from the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, collected there by Mr. N. Plumley. The species proved to be new to science and its description is given below. A recent revision of the New Guinea freshwater crabs (Bott, 1974) listed 13 certain and 3 dubious species from the island. These 13 species belong to 3 genera (Rouxana Bott, 1969: 5 species; Geelvinkia Bott, 1974: 3 species; and Holthuisana Bott, 1969: 5 species). The first two genera and the nominate subgenus of the third are confined to New Guinea. All three genera belong to the family Sundathelphusidae Bott, 1969. The new...

A new fresh-water prawn of the genus Macrobrachium (Crustacea Decapoda, Caridea) from Madagascar Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Due to the kindness of Mr. Y. Therezien, Ingénieur-hydrobiologiste of the Centre Technique Forestier Tropical at Tananarive, Madagascar, the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received at several occasions freshwater Crustacea from Madagascar. Two previous reports (Holthuis, 1964, 1965) dealt with the crayfishes and the atyid shrimps of these collections. Among the fresh-water Palaemonid prawns a new species of Macrobrachium was found, which is the subject of the present note. It is a great pleasure to dedicate this beautiful species to Mr. Therezien. Macrobrachium therezieni new species River of Maningory, Fénérive district, Tamatave province, eastern Madagascar; 16 February 1961; Y. Therezien, no. 9. — 1 adult male (holotype); Rijksmuseum van...

A new record for the anchialine shrimp Ligur uveae (Borradaile, 1899) (Decapoda, Hippolytidae) in the Philippines with notes on its morphology, behaviour and ecology Naturalis
Wear, R.G.; Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION Ligur uveae is generally considered an anchialine species (found in land-locked, generally supralittoral saltwater pools) with the type locality given simply as "Uvea, Loyalty Islands" by Borradaile (1899). The species is widely distributed geographically, although locally evidently confined to a very restricted habitat. Its known range extends from the western Indian Ocean to Polynesia: Aldabra, western Indian Ocean (Borradaile, 1917; Gordon, 1936); Halmahera, northern Moluccas, Indonesia (Holthuis, 1947; 1963); Uvea, Loyalty Islands (Borradaile, 1899; Gordon, 1936); Sayawa Islet near Uvea (Monod, 1968); Vatulele Island, Fiji Archipelago (Gordon, 1936; Derrick, 1957; Marden, 1958; Reed & Hames, 1967); Vanua Vatu and Vanua Levu Islands,...

A new species of shrimp, Rhynchocinetes hiatti (Crustacea, Decapoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Hayashi, K.-I..
The present paper describes a new species of the genus Rhynchocinetes from the Indo-West Pacific region. The species, R. hiatti n. sp., whose name has repeatedly appeared in print as a nomen nudum, is closely related to R. rigens Gordon from the Atlantic but distinguishable from the latter by the presence of pterygostomian spine, the peculiar colour pattern and other small differences.

A note on an interesting association of the crab Platypodiella picta (A. Milne-Edwards 1869) and species of Zoantharia Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Holthuis, L.B..
In the framework of the CANCAP-Project, a long-term oceanographic collecting program performed by the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, extensive shore collections were made from 1976 onwards on most of the Macaronesian Islands. During the collecting trips, a very ornamental crab, Platypodi ella picta (A.MILNE EDWARDS, 1869) was found on three occasions by the senior author. In addition the species was collected on the coast of Senegal. In all cases it was found associated with species of Zoantharia.

A revision of the Indo-West Pacific spiny Lobsters of the Panulirus Japonicus group Naturalis
George, R.W.; Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION As a result of separate investigations on Panulirus japonicus (sens, lat.), the present authors independently came to the conclusion that more than one species was included under that name. The first author (George), when in 1958 studying specimens of the Western Australian spiny lobster which at that time was indicated by the name Panulirus longipes (A. Milne Edwards) (a species considered by many authors to be synonymous with P. japonicus), was dissatisfied with that identification and obtained material of the typical P. longipes from Zanzibar. Comparison with this material showed that the Western Australian spiny lobster represented an unnamed species, which he then described as P. cygnus. He also arrived at the conclusion that P. japonicus...

A supplementary note on the Carcinological work of C. S. Rafinesque Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Shortly after the printing of my 1954 paper on C. S. Rafinesque as a carcinologist (Holthuis, 1954, Zool. Verhand. Leiden, no. 25, pp. 1-43) had been completed, I became aware of the fact that, when preparing the above publication, I unfortunately had overlooked the existence of one more publication by Rafinesque which contains information on Crustacea. The present note deals with this 8th carcinological publication by Rafinesque, the reference to which is the following: 1818 (August). Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Vol. i. Part I. Philadelphia. 8 vo. pp. 220, and 9 plates. May to December, 1817. Amer. monthly Mag. crit. Rev., vol. 3, pp. 269-274. A (very) critical review of the publication mentioned in the title of...

Albertus Seba's „Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri...." (1734-1765) and the „Planches de Seba" (1827-1831) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION The present note is the result of an investigation into the correct date of publication of the third volume of A. Seba's great work "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. ..". In my own studies on Crustacea I accepted the year 1761 as correct, following in this Engelmann (1846) and the title page of the copy of Seba's book that I consulted. Dr. M. Boeseman, ichthyologist of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, pointed out to me that in ichthyological literature the year of publication of this volume is practically always cited as 1758. Also Engel (1937) in his biography of Seba gave this later date. In trying to straighten this question out I obtained the most cordial help from Dr. Boeseman, Prof. Dr. H. Engel, former director of the...

Alpheus saxidomus new species, a rock boring snapping shrimp from the Pacific coast of, Costa Rica, with notes on Alpheus simus Guérin-Méneville, 1856 Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Recently, Professor Dr. Rudolf Fischer, Institut für Geologie und Paläontologie, Philipps-Universität, Marburg, F. R. Germany, submitted for identification some material of an Alpheid shrimp, which was found to be responsible for a considerable erosion of part of a rocky shore on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The species proved to be new to science, while also the rock-boring activities seem hitherto to be unknown for the Alpheidae, or, for that matter, for Decapod Crustacea as a whole. The new species proves to be closely related to Alpheus simus Guérin-Méneville from the Caribbean area, but it shows minor, but evidently constant differences. It is a great pleasure to thank Professor Fischer for his kindness in allowing me to study this material and...

Caridean Shrimps found in Land-Locked Saltwater Pools at four Indo-West Pacific Localities (Sinai Peninsula, Funafuti Atoll, Maui and Hawaii Islands), with the description of one new genus and four new species Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
At several occasions red coloured caridean shrimps have been reported from tropical land-locked saltwater pools. These pools are situated at some distance from the sea, but, because the level of the water rises and falls with the tides, must have subterranean connections with the sea. The shrimps belong to species that so far have not been found outside this special type of habitat, although some have a rather extensive geographical distribution. Apart from the peculiar habitat in which they are found and apart from their red coloration, there is very little that these species have in common. The 11 species so far found exclusively in these pools belong to 9 different genera and to 5 different families (see also Holthuis, 1963; Chace & Manning, 1972)....

Cavernicolous And Terrestrial Decapod Crustacea From Northern Sarawak, Borneo Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
During the 1977-1978 Royal Geographical Society Mulu (Sarawak) Expedition a number of Decapod Crustacea was obtained. Some were collected by Mr. Philip Chapman in the course of studies of the invertebrates of the limestone caves in the Gunong Mulu National Park, 4th Division of Sarawak, and the Niah National Park south of Miri. Another expedition member, Dr. N. M. Collins, collected several crabs in pitfall traps and one in a soil core in the course of studies of terrestrial invertebrates of the Mulu area. I am most indebted to Messrs Chapman and Collins for placing this interesting collection of cavernicolous and terrestrial Decapoda at my disposal, and for the extensive information on the localities, habitats and the biology of the species, as well as...

Tevens...
