Agri-environmental and rural development indicators: a proposal Organic Eprints
Yli-Viikari, Anja; Risku-Norja, Helmi; Nuutinen, Visa; Heinonen, Esa; Hietala-Koivu, Reija; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Hyvönen, Terho; Kantanen, Juha; Raussi, Satu; Rikkonen, Pasi; Seppälä, Anu; Vehmasto, Elina.
The present work is a proposal of a set of indicators prepared for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The indicators are to be used in monitoring the implementation of the Ministry's strategy for sustainable use of natural resources. The core of the present work is in setting up an indicator system, which is structured around specific themes. The focus is on the assessment of agricultural and rural development. At the end, an attempt is made to provide a comprehensive picture by considering the mutual inter-linkages between the various indicators.

Ecosystem service provision by establishing temporal habitats in agricultural environments Organic Eprints
Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Alanen, Eeva-Liisa; Hyvönen, Terho; Kuussaari, Mikko.
Ecosystem services can be promoted by establishing temporal habitats. The most beneficial management varies between ecosystem services. Area of temporal habitats supported by AES should be increased in agricultural landscape.

Ecosystem service provision by establishing temporal habitats in agricultural environments Organic Eprints
Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Alanen, Eeva-Liisa; Hyvönen, Terho; Kuussaari, Mikko.
Short-term rotational fallows, new set-asides and seed mixtures containing specific seed-bearing crops are best alternative to provide seed food for farmland birds (Hyvönen & Huusela-Veistola 2011). The age of set-aside and vegetation structure are more important than seed mixture or plant species richness in supporting insect food for birds, and therefore set asides of various ages are needed (Hyvönen & Huusela-Veistola 2011). Even a short-term fallow sown with a simple seed mixture can encourage populations of generalist predators (Huusela-Veistola & Hyvönen 2006), but longterm set-asides may be even better for natural enemies (Huusela-Veistola 2008). Because of the various species requirements numerous habitats are needed if...

Effects of sowing time on pink snow mould, leaf rust and winter damage in winter rye varieties in Finland Organic Eprints
Serenius, Marjo; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Avikainen, Hanna; Pahkala, Katri; Laine, Antti.
Disease infection in relation to sowing time of winter rye (Secale cereale) was studied in southern Finland in order to compare overwintering capacity of modern rye varieties and to give recommendations for rye cultivation. This was done by using three sowing times and four rye varieties in field trials conducted at three locations in 1999–2001. The early sown rye (beginning of August) was severely affected by diseases caused by Puccinia recondita and Microdochium nivale, whereas postponing sowing for two weeks after the recommended sowing time resulted in considerably less infection. The infection levels of diseases differed among rye varieties. Finnish rye varieties Anna and Bor 7068 were more resistant to snow mould and more winter hardy than the Polish...

Enhancing ecosystem service provision by floral biodiversity in long-term set-asides Organic Eprints
Hyvönen, Terho; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Kuussaari, Mikko.
Species richness of pollinators increased throughout the four-year experiment in all treatments. Pollinator species richness and abundance were highest during the whole experiment in the seed mixture containing meadow plants but the difference to the other seed mixtures decreased during the last two years. The experiment showed that the benefits of applying alternative seed mixtures vary between ecosystem services. This suggests that the promotion of each ecosystem service requires specific management.

Overview of vectors of cereal viruses in Finland Organic Eprints
Huusela-Veistola, Erja.
Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), Oat sterile dwarf virus (OSDV) and Wheat dwarf virus (WDV) are the most serious virus diseases of cereals in Finland. BYDV is transmitted by aphids, mainly by bird cherry oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi. OSDV and WDV are leafhopper transmitted viruses.

Pests and diseases in a changing climate a major challenge for Finnish crop production Organic Eprints
Hakala, Kaija; Hannukkala, Asko; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Jalli, Marja; Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo.
A longer growing season and higher accumulated effective temperature sum (ETS) will improve crop production potential in Finland. The production potential of new or at present underutilised crops (e.g. maize (Zea mays L.), oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.)) will improve and it will be possible to grow more productive varieties of the currently grown crops (spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.)). Also cultivation of autumn sown crops could increase if winters become milder and shorter, promoting overwintering success. Climatic conditions may on the other hand become restrictive in many ways. For example, early season droughts could intensify because of higher temperatures and...

Recorded and potential alien invertebrate pests in Finnish agriculture and horticulture Organic Eprints
Vänninen, Irene; Worner, Susan; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Nissinen, Anne; Saikkonen, Kari.
It is assumed that climate change will promote pest invasions and their establishment in new regions. We have updated the list of current alien invertebrate pest species in Finland and produced a list of potential new alien pests using a self-organizing map (SOM) that ranks species in terms of their risk of entry into Finland. The 76 pest species recorded included 66 insects, 5 nematodes, 2 mites and 3 slugs. Nearly half of the alien species appeared to have invaded Finland during the last 48 years. The SOM analysis is considered a viable tool for identification of potentially high-risk invasive pests from among the multitude of potential alien invaders, and represents a useful complement to local expert knowledge-based risk assessment of potentially...

Sowing time affects the abundance of pests and weeds in winter rye Organic Eprints
Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Jalli, Heikki; Salonen, Jukka; Pahkala, Katri; Laine, Antti.
Selection of an appropriate sowing time for some winter rye (Secale cereale) cultivars could reduce the need for crop protection measures. In this study the occurrence and status of pests and weeds in relation to sowing time and growth habit of winter rye was studied in southern Finland. This was done using three sowing times and four rye varieties in field trials conducted at three locations in 1999–2001. The early sown rye was severely affected by pests (Oscinella frit, Mayetiola destructor) and weeds, whereas postponing sowing for two weeks after the recommended sowing time in late August resulted in considerably less damage and the optimal establishment of crop stands. The German hybrid varieties Picasso and Esprit produced more tillers m-2 in autumn...
