AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTIVE EFFICIENCY IN ALBERTA DAIRY PRODUCTION AgEcon
Jeffrey, Scott R.; Grant, Heather-Ann R..
The World Trade Organization is currently formulating an agenda for a new round of global trade negotiations. Therefore, the likelihood of increased competition within Canada's supply managed dairy industry is probable. Consequently, there is agreater need for producers to be concerned with efficiency and with their competitiveness in the international marketplace. This study assessed the cost efficiency and competitiveness of Alberta dairy producers by estimating the economic costs associated with milk production, and deriving the physical and economic efficiency of producers. Results support the presence of economies of size and economies of yield within Alberta milk production. A link between increased herd size, labour productivity, and lower...

An Overview of Agriculture in the Rural Municipalities of the Lower Souris River Watershed AgEcon
Harper, Dana; Unterschultz, James R.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
A statistical overview of agriculture in the region encompassed by the Lower Souris River Watershed committee was undertaken. The region in the south east corner of the province of Saskatchewan has about 8%of the total number of farms in Saskatchewan, and this has remained relatively consistent since the early 1980s. The actual number of has decreased and Statistics Canada reports that the total number of farms in crop district 1A and 1B in the 2006 census is 1,823 and 1,743, respectively. The area of farms in crop district 1 is currently about 7% of the total area of farms in Saskatchewan. Statistics Canada reports that the total area of farms in crop district 1A and 1B in the 2006 census is 2,687,728 and 2,312,446, respectively. The report also provides...

Cost and Efficiency in Alberta Dairy Production AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
This study investigates the relationships between farm size, milk yield, cost of production, and technical efficiency in the Alberta dairy industry. Estimates of a stochastic production frontier are obtained with two alternative methods; an iterative "average frontier: (AF) procedure and a maximum-likelihood composed error (CE) term method. An index of technical efficiency is calculated for every herd in the sample, with the AF method resulting in an average efficiency ratio of 85 percent, and the CE method producing an average efficiency ratio of 83 percent. Regressions of production cost on milk output, herd size, and efficiency are used to test for the effects of size economies, yield economies, and technical efficiency on production cost. These results...

Crop Management Decision Making: Information Used and Required By Manitoba Crop Producers AgEcon
Zbeetnoff, Darrell M.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
As part of the project entitled "Management Options for Grain Production in the 1980s and 1990s", a farmer survey was conducted during the fall and winter of 1988-89. A total of 234 Manitoba crop producers were interviewed, and asked questions concerning the information used and required in making specific crop management decisions. The survey respondents were asked questions pertaining to the following management decisions: 1. fertilizer rates, and method/timing of nitrogen application, ii. method/timing of pesticide application, 111. varietal selection for wheat and canola, and iv. canola acreage decisions. In each case, farmers were requested to provide actual practices, information used in making decisions, and perceived information gaps. Producers...

Do Decision Makers' Debt-risk Attitudes Affect the Agency Costs of Debt? AgEcon
Hailu, Getu; Goddard, Ellen W.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
Over the past 25 years, traditional agricultural co-operatives have been challenged by competition from local investor-owned firms and multinational companies, deregulation and globalization of trade, and increased market concentration in suppliers and purchasers. At the same time, co-operatives have constantly been seeking to add value to their member services through expansion and/or adoption of new technology. The capital investment needed for these endeavours has to be financed, and for traditional co-operatives the major source of financing new investments has been long-term borrowing. As a result some co-operatives are characterized by high debt loads, which may result in increased financial risk exposure. Important factors that may influence the...

Ecological Goods and Services Survey Summary Prepared for: Lower Souris Watershed Committee AgEcon
Entem, Alicia; Unterschultz, James R.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
An interview based survey of farm landowners in the south east corner of Saskatchewan was undertaken to evaluate the provision of wildlife habitat by agriculture. Producers were asked to provide management information regarding a piece of their land that was managed as a unit. Within the past ten years there has been a reduction in the conversion of remaining native land to crop land, an increase in conversion of annual crop land to perennial cover crops, an increase in the use of minimum disturbance (no-till) farming, and a decrease in the use of fire on stubble fields and sloughs. Many producers in the area often stated economic reasons for their current land use division. Even ecological reasons (productive capacity of the soil, poor cropping soil,...

ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF MANURE MANAGEMENT AND FARM GATE APPLICATIONS: A LITERATURE REVIEW OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF MANURE MANAGEMENT IN ALBERTA'S LIVESTOCK SECTORS AgEcon
Unterschultz, James R.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
Livestock operations in Alberta have a significant impact on the economy. Manure is a by-product of livestock production. The review of the science on manure examined the environmental impacts of manure. These impacts include water pollution, air pollution, climatic change, and soil degradation. There are several technologies that may be used to manage manure on-farm and off-farm. These include nutrient recycling through soil application and composting. Composting reduces the volume of manure, but increases the nitrogen losses from the manure This review, using a very simplistic approach, estimated that more than 6.3 million tonnes of manure were generated in Alberta in 1996. Other studies have estimated significantly higher annual manure production....

Economic Performance in Alberta Dairy: An Application of the Mimic Model AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
Dairy production at the farm-level is undergoing a rapid transformation in preparation for more open competition in the future. However, the means by which dairy farms can best improve their economic performance is of some question. Using measures of allocative, technical, and overall efficiency as indicators of a latent "performance" variable, this study specifies and estimates a multiple-indicator, multiple-cause (MIMIC) model of Alberta dairy production. Variables thought to "cause" performance include herd size, milk yield, breeding and veterinary expense, capital-to-labour ratio, concentrate-to-forage ratio, and operator experience. The results show that gains in performance may be made through increased capital intensity, greater spending on breeding...

Economies of Size and Total Factor Productivity in Alberta Cow-Calf Production AgEcon
Jeffrey, Scott R.; Yang, Jun.
This paper applies both parametric and non-parametric approaches to evaluate Economies of Size and Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in Alberta cow-calf production based on the unbalanced panel data from 196 farmers during the time period from 1995 to 2002. Under the parametric approach, a random parameter translog cost system and a translog cost frontier are constructed and estimated respectively. The results from the cost system estimation suggest that on average, cow-calf production in Alberta exhibits Economies of Size, technical progress and positive TFP. However, exploitable Economies of Size decrease over time, technical change rate and TFP even become negative at 2002. The critical problem, therefore, is how to reverse the trend and maintain good...

EFFICIENCY AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE: AN APPLICATION OF THE MIMIC MODEL AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
Using measures of allocative, technical, and overall efficiency as indicators of a latent “"performance"” variable, and a set of farm operating ratios as indicators of the amount of effort to improve the quality of feeding, breeding, and labor productivity, we employ a multiple-indicator, multiple-cause (MIMIC) model of Alberta dairy production to determine the factors that contribute to economic performance. Gains in performance may be made through increased milk yield, herd size, breeding program quality, and labor quality, but not by operator experience or increased expenditures on feeding programs. Consequently, the industry trend toward larger dairy herds may indeed improve the economic performance of dairy operators.

Evaluating Alternative Safety Net Programs in Alberta: A Firm-level Simulation Analysis AgEcon
Jeffrey, Scott R.; Novak, Frank S..
This paper examines alternative risk management strategies in terms of their effectiveness for three representative Alberta farm operations. Stochastic dynamic simulation methods are used to model financial performance for these farms, and alternative risk management programs are compared in terms of their ability to stabilize returns, support income and reduce the probability of bankruptcy. The results suggest that government programs such as the Net Income Stabilization Account (NISA) program or the Farm Income Disaster Program (FIDP) in Alberta have some benefits in terms of supporting income levels and reducing the chances of farm failure. Neither program is very effective, however, in stabilizing year to year income or cash flow for the farm...

Hedonic Pricing of Dairy Bulls - An Alternative Index of Genetic Merit AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
This study investigates the use of hedonic pricing to identify the value of relevant production and type traits for dairy bulls in Alberta. A hedonic pricing model is estimated that models semen price as a function of individual production and longevity characteristics for a sample of Holstein bulls. This model corrects for sources of statistical bias in the data (i.e., censored data and endogenous supply problems). The results suggest that the most important characteristics in valuing dairy bulls are milk volume, protein and fat content, general conformation, body capacity, the popularity of the bull, and the probability that the bull's semen may be in short supply. This methodology may be used to establish a method of forecasting semen prices for newly...
