The emergence of DNA barcoding and metabarcoding opened new ways to study biological diversity, however, the completion of DNA barcode libraries is fundamental for such approaches to succeed. This dataset is a DNA barcode reference library (fragment of Cytochrome Oxydase I gene) for 2,190 specimens representing at least 540 species of shore fishes collected over 10 years at 154 sites across the four volcanic archipelagos of French Polynesia; the Austral, Gambier, Marquesas and Society Islands, a 5,000,000 km(2) area. Habitat dynamics interacting with species dispersal abilities could generate gradients in species diversity and prevalence of species traits when the latter are associated with species dispersal potential. Using a process‐based model of diversification constrained by a dispersal parameter, we simulated the interplay between reef habitat dynamics during the past 140 million years and dispersal, shaping lineage diversification history and assemblage composition globally. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. Adult and larval traits as determinants of geographic range size among tropical reef fishes ArchiMer

Most marine organisms disperse via ocean currents as larvae, so it is often assumed that larval-stage duration is the primary determinant of geographic range size. However, empirical tests of this relationship have yielded mixed results, and alternative hypotheses have rarely been considered. Here we assess the relative influence of adult and larval-traits on geographic range size using a global dataset encompassing 590 species of tropical reef fishes in 47 families, the largest compilation of such data to date for any marine group. Aging of adult tropical reef by otoliths : a comparison of three methods on Diagramma pictum IRD

Age determination for #Diagramma pictum$, (n=102), were conducted using three methods. The two first methods are based on the counts of annuli on respectively whole otolith cross sections. The third method use the decrease of otolith daily growth increment (DGI) density with age. The growth curves found with the first two methods are comparable and similar to previous results. However, the analysis of life history traits such as size at first reproduction indicates that these methods are likely to underestimate growth. The use of DGI density yields a faster growth curve. Campagne CORAIL 1 de chalutage exploratoire aux îles Chesterfield et à Lansdowne ("N.O. ALIS" - 15 août au 4 septembre 1988) IRD

Au cours de la campagne de chalutage exploratoire CORAIL 1 le N.O. ALIS a réalisé 55 traits de chalut aux îles Chesterfield, Bellona et sur le banc de Lansdowne. La proportion de fonds chalutables n'excède pas 30 % des fonds de plus de 50 m et est nulle entre 0 et 50 m. Au total 123 espèces ont été collectées dont trois pourraient être nouvelles. Les affinités des peuplements ichthyologiques rencontrés sont plus importantes avec la Nouvelle-Calédonie qu'avec l'Australie. Les densités (8 à 35 poissons/ha) et les biomasses (0.4 à 2.6 kg/ha) estimées sont très faibles, de 8 à 60 fois moindres que ce qui a été observé en Nouvelle Calédonie. Catalogue des poissons de Nouvelle-Calédonie = Checklist of fishes from New Caledonia IRD

Le présent catalogue est une compilation de tous les poissons répertoriés dans la zone économique de Nouvelle Calédonie. Au total 1759 espèces, réparties parmi 199 familles, ont été recensées. Les familles les plus diversifiées sont en majeure partie benthiques et d'eau peu profonde à l'exception des #Myctophidae$. Deux tableaux permettent de faire quelques comparaisons avec d'autres catalogues du Pacifique. De telles comparaisons doivent cependant être menées avec prudence car l'effort d'échantillonage peut varier considérablement d'une région à l'autre. En Nouvelle Calédonie la plupart des récoltes ont eu lieu dans le lagon sud-ouest et sur les fonds meubles du lagon nord. Comparative phylogeography of the western Indian Ocean reef fauna ArchiMer

Assessing patterns of connectivity at the community and population levels is relevant to marine resource management and conservation. The present study reviews this issue with a focus on the western Indian Ocean (WIO) biogeographic province. This part of the Indian Ocean holds more species than expected from current models of global reef fish species richness. In this study, checklists of reef fish species were examined to determine levels of endemism in each of 10 biogeographic provinces of the Indian Ocean. Results showed that the number of endemic species was higher in the WIO than in any other region of the Indian Ocean. Correlation between catch data from bottom longlines and fish censures in the SW lagoon of New Caledonia IRD

On a total of 363 bottoms longline sets in the SW lagoon of New Caledonia, 45 were surveyed using visual census. Abundance and biomass estimates were derived from these censuses. These estimates were highly correlated to catch per unit effort in numbers and weight. From these relationships were established contour maps of soft bottom fish abundance and biomass. The total biomass of longline catchable fish was estimated between 11800 and 25500 tons with an average of 17700 tons which represents 5.8 tons/km2. It was also estimated that longline catchable fish represented 48 % of the total fish biomass of soft bottoms. Comparisons with other soft bottom fisheries in the region are presented. Understanding species’ roles in food webs requires an accurate assessment of their trophic niche. However, it is challenging to delineate potential trophic interactions across an ecosystem, and a paucity of empirical information often leads to inconsistent definitions of trophic guilds based on expert opinion, especially when applied to hyperdiverse ecosystems.
