Assessment of agricultural land-use change for helping sustainable land management and landscape development Inra
Choisis, J.P.; Thévenet, C.; Gout, J.; Ladet, S.; Sheeren, D.; Gibon, A..
Agriculture is nowadays expected to adopt “multifunctional” land use practice as a contribution to sustainable development of rural areas. We started a participatory research study in the Coteaux de Gascogne (France) to prospect local paths for agricultural systems contribution to landusesustainability. The area considered is a study-site of the Long term Ecosystem Research network. Our first common objective is to understand how family-farm dynamics contribute to land-use change at the landscape level. We started therefore a spatially-explicit and exhaustive study of agricultural land use and its change since the 1950s at a reference area of limited size (4 villages). The method consists in survey at every farmer using land in the area using both a...

Alignier, A.; ESPY, P.; Deconchat, M.; Ladet, S..

Discriminating small wooded elements in rural landscape from aerial photography : a hybrid pixel/object-based analysis approach Inra
Sheeren, D.; Bastin, N.; Ouin, A.; Ladet, S.; Balent, G.; Lacombe, J.P..
While small, fragmented wooded elements do not represent a large surface area in agricultural landscape, their role in the sustainability of ecological processes is recognized widely. Unfortunately, landscape ecology studies suffer from the lack of methods for automatic detection of these elements. We propose a hybrid approach using both aerial photographs and ancillary data of coarser resolution to automatically discriminate small wooded elements. First, a spectral and textural analysis is performed to identify all the planted-tree areas in the digital photograph. Secondly, an object-orientated spatial analysis using the two data sources and including a multi-resolution segmentation is applied to distinguish between large and small woods, copses,...

Identification and characterization of forest edge segments for mapping edge diversity in rural landscapes Inra
Deconchat, M.; Alignier, A.; ESPY, P.; Ladet, S..
Forest edges are key components of rural landscapes and they influence major ecological processes. There is a variability of forest edges, according to their physiognomy, orientation, history and topography, but few methods are available to identify automatically these different types of edges and to map them at a large scale. We propose to identify edge segments based on morphological subdivision of forest boundaries. These segments can be mapped and characterized by other spatial data. A procedure based on Arcgis tools, applied on the output from GUIDOS tools, is used to identify edge segments. We provide examples of edge segments descriptors obtained from a digital elevation model and from a landcover map. Results showed the feasibility of the automatic...

Relative contribution of edge and interior zones to patch size effect on species richness : An example for woody plants Inra
Gonzalez, M.; Ladet, S.; Deconchat, M.; Cabanettes, A.; Alard, D.; Balent, G..
In order to understand the capacity of habitats to conserve species, many authors have searched for a species–area relationship (SAR) to evaluate the effect of patch size on species richness in habitat fragments. However, a range of different processes may underlie or obscure this relationship. For woody plant species in forest fragments, as for other taxa, considering forest edges separately in the investigation of SAR is particularly relevant. The objective of our study was to evaluate edge influence on SAR in a fragmented forest landscape in south-western France. To achieve this objective, we considered SAR in two separate spatial portions of the forest fragment: the edge and the forest interior. We also considered SAR for different ecological groups of...

Variability of cutting regimes in small private woodlots of south-western France Inra
