Bilateral lamellar keratoplasty in descemetocele treatment in dog with botulism by use of equine renal capsule and conjunctival pedicle graft Ciência Rural
Laus,José Luiz; Galera,Paula Diniz; Schocken-Iturrino,Ruben Pablo; Cavassani,Marluce de Macedo; Andrade,Alexandre Lima de.
A 3-year-old, male mixed breed dog with botulism and bilateral descemetocele was submitted to lamellar keratoplasty with equine renal capsule preserved in glycerin in the right eye and conjunctival pedicle graft in the left eye. The evolution was satisfactory in both eyes, but better in the eye receiving the equine renal capsule, because the corneal transparence was more evident in that eye. On the other hand, the surgical period was more quickly in the eye receiving the equine renal capsule because the preparation of the conjunctival pedicle before the keratoplasty was not necessary.

Iatrogenic keratoconjunctivitis sicca in a dog Ciência Rural
Almeida,Denise Eliza de; Mamede,Fabricio Villela; Duque Ortiz,Juan Pablo; Laus,José Luiz.
Qualitative and quantitative abnormalities in primary components of the tear can alter the dynamics of the lacrimal film, compromising its function. Lipids, an aqueous fraction and mucoproteins constitute the lacrimal film. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a disease commonly diagnosed in dogs. It is characterized by the deficiency of the aqueous fraction in the lacrimal film that results in dryness, inflammation of the conjunctive and cornea with progressive corneal illness and reduction of vision and pain. Due to the significant contribution of the third eyelid lacrimal gland to the production of the aqueous fraction of the lacrimal film, the removal of this gland when prolapsed is an important cause of iatrogenic keratoconjuctivitis sicca. This paper...

Mamede,Fabrício Villela; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Souza,Ana Letícia Groszewicz; Brunelli,Adriana Torrecilhas Jorge; Pontin,Karina; Soares,Edson Garcia; Albuquerque,Sérgio de; Laus,José Luiz.
Myoplasties of the extraocular muscle may cause adhesions between the operated muscle and the adjacent tissues, commonly generating cicatricial strabismus. With the purpose of reducing to a minimum the occurrence of adhesion, the effects of mitomycin C, an antifibrotic agent, were studied in concentrations of 0.008%, 0.02%, and 0.04% applied during intraoperative of myoplasties of the superior rectus muscle of rabbits. Fifty six animals were divided in five groups. During the postoperative, the operated areas were washed with physiological solution. Eye drop instillation to prevent inflammation and bacterial infection were used. The method to analyze the results consisted of clinical and histological evaluation and statistical analyzes. We also evaluated...

Lesões isquêmicas do testículo de cães mediante garroteamento temporário do cordão espermático Ciência Rural
Ferreira,Affonso Luiz; Crisci,Ana Rosa; Fiorani,Segundo Amarillis Salize; Laus,José Luiz; Jorge,Adriana Torrecilhas.

Non-contact specular microscopy in aphakic and pseudophakic dogs Ciência Rural
Nagatsuyu,Claudia Emi; Abreu,Priscila Barreto de; Kobashigawa,Karina Kamachi; Conceição,Luciano Fernandes da; Morales,Adriana; Andrade,Alexandre Lima de; Padua,Ivan Ricardo Martinez; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Laus,José Luiz.
Cataract is one of the most common ocular diseases in dogs, and phacoemulsification is considered its treatment of choice. Posterior capsular opacity (PCO) is a frequent complication and may occur weeks or months after the surgery. It is known that intraocular lenses (IOL) used for the correction of post-operative hypermetropia are an adjunctive aid in the prevention of PCOs, mainly the foldable acrylics designs with square and truncated edges. However, IOL placement may result in endothelial cell loss. This study evaluated the morphology and cellularity of the endothelium by non-contact specular microscopy in aphakic and pseudophakic dogs. Endothelial cell density, endothelial cell area, coefficient of variation and hexagonal cells percent were analyzed...
