Formation of homogeneous groups of bovine milk production units via multivariate statistical techniques Ciência Rural
Vargas,Diego Prado de; Nörnberg,José Laerte; Mello,Renius de Oliveira; Scheibler,Rudolf Brand; Mello,Fernanda Cristina Breda; Rizzo,Fábio Antunes; Bellato,Tatiana Kátia Bertussi.
ABSTRACT: Milk supply chain in Brazil exhibits significant production system heterogeneity in all federal units. Thus, the objective of this study was to form homogeneous groups of bovine milk production units based on the chemical and microbiological quality of the milk via multivariate statistical techniques. A total of 1,541 milk producing units (MPUs), corresponding to 44,089 samples, were analyzed. The first three principal components accounted for 81.38% of the total variation in the data. Principal component 1 (PC1) was associated with the chemical quality of milk (fat, protein [PROT] and total dry extract [TDE] content), while PC2 and PC3 were associated with microbiological quality (somatic cell count [SCC] and total bacterial count [TBC]). The...

Genetic evaluation models for post-weaning weight gain in a multibreed Angus-Nelore population PAB
Prestes,Alan Miranda; Oliveira,Mauricio Morgado de; Mello,Fernanda Cristina Breda; Rorato,Paulo Roberto Nogara; Lopes,Jader Silva; Feltes,Giovani Luis; Bravo,André Padilha.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify the most suitable model for the genetic evaluation of post-weaning weight gain in a multibreed Angus-Nelore population. Three models were tested using the Bayesian inference method: traditional animal model (M1), multibreed animal model without (M2) and with segregation (M3). The choice of the best model followed the criteria: number of parameters (Np), deviance information criterion (DIC), conditional predictive ordinate (CPO), and deviance based on Bayes factors. Spearman’s rank correlations were estimated for the top 10, 20, and 30% sires. M1 presented the highest values for all criteria, except for Np, and the lowest direct heritability estimate of 0.15±0.01. The heritability estimates for M2 and M3...

Strategies to control inbreeding in a pig breeding program: a simulation study Ciência Rural
Lopes,Jader Silva; Rorato,Paulo Roberto Nogara; Mello,Fernanda Cristina Breda; Freitas,Marcelo Silva de; Prestes,Alan Miranda; Garcia,Diogo Anastácio; Oliveira,Maurício Morgado de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate, through data simulation, the impact of restrictions on the maximum number of full- and half-sibs selected for males and females on the level of inbreeding and genetic gain of the herd. Data came from real populations A and B, composed of Pietrain and Landrace breed pigs, respectively. To generate the simulated populations, a Fortran-language simulator was developed using the (co)variances of the breeding values and the productive and reproductive rates obtained from populations A and B. Two data files were created. The first contained the pedigree of the previous 10 years, with 21,906 and 251,343 animals in populations A and B, respectively. The second included breeding values for age to reach 110 Kg...
