Decline of genetic variability in a captive population of Pacific white shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei using microsatellite and pedigree information Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Vela Avitúa,Sergio; Montaldo,Hugo H; Márquez Valdelamar,Laura; Campos Montes,Gabriel R; Castillo Juárez,Héctor.
Background: The objective of this study was to estimate the decline of genetic variability and the changes in effective population size in three shrimp populations. One was a wild population collected at several points in the Mexican Pacific Ocean. The other two populations were different generations (7 and 9) from a captive population selected for growth and survival. Microsatellite markers and pedigree were both used to assess genetic variability and effective population size. Results: Using 26 loci, both captive populations showed a decline in the expected heterozygosity (20%) and allelic diversity indices (48 to 91%) compared to the wild population (P < 0.05). The studied captive populations did not differ significantly from each other regarding...

Genetic parameters for milk yield and reproduction traits in the Chilean Dairy Overo Colorado cattle breed Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Montaldo,Hugo H; Trejo,Carlos; Lizana,Carlos.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for milk production and reproduction traits using phenotypic and pedigree information from the Dairy Overo Colorado breed from southern Chile. Single- and multi-trait mixed models were used to analyze the data. Analyses were performed using ASReml software. The heritability estimates for milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, fat content, protein content, age at first calving and calving interval were 0.29 ± 0.04, 0.34 ± 0.04, 0.30 ± 0.04, 0.56 ± 0.04, 0.56 ± 0.04, 0.01 ± 0.07 and 0.002 ± 0.02, respectively. The genetic correlations between yield traits were high and positive (≥ 0.81). The genetic correlations of milk yield with fat content (-0.32) and protein content (-0.34) were...

Genetic polymorphism of the αs1-casein locus in five populations of goats from Mexico Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Torres-Vázquez,José Antonio; Vázquez Flores,Felícitas; Montaldo,Hugo H; Ulloa-Arvizu,Raúl; Valencia Posadas,Mauricio; Gayosso Vázquez,Amanda; Alonso Morales,Rogelio Alejandro.
With the objective of estimating allele frequencies, and testing for population divergence for the CSN1S1 locus, genotypes of animals from five goat populations; Saanen (n = 97), Alpine (n = 81) Toggenburg (n = 92), local goats with external appearance similar to the Murciana-Granadina breed from Central Mexico (n = 26) and heterogeneous local animals denominated Mosaico Lagunero (n = 30), from Northern Mexico, were identified using PCR and Xmn1 PCR-RFLP methodology. For Saanen, Alpine and Toggenburg, the sum of E and F alleles had the largest frequencies (from 0.468 to 0.789), while for the groups local Murciana-Granadina and Mosaico Lagunero the sum of the most frequent allelic groups (A* and B*), were 0.385 and 0.533 respectively. Both local...
