Organic agriculture world-wide offers the promise of a future to produce and distribute food and other farm products in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. The full benefits of organic agriculture are just now being realized—from ecosystem services to the provision of healthier food - yet, to reach its full potential organic farming needs to address many challenges. While organic agriculture has grown in strength and is in the most favorable position it has ever been in with respect to market conditions, government policies and international institutional support, it still does not have adequate resources to continue its expansion. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and an agenda to advance...

Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...

Arbuscular mycorrhizae in a long-term field trial comparing low-input (organic, biological) and high-input (conventional) farming systems in a crop rotation Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Edenhofer, Stephan; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Niggli, Urs.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) root colonization was studied in a long-term field trial in which four farming systems currently in use in Switzerland were continuously applied to a randomized set of plots at a single field site from 1978 till 1993. There were two low-input farming systems (organic and bio-dynamic) and two high-input (conventional) farming systems (according to Swiss guidelines of integrated plant production with and without farmyard manure). The systems had an identical 7-year crop rotation and tillage scheme and differed essentially only in the amount and type of fertilizer supplied and in plant protection management. The percentage of root colonization by AM fungi was determined in field samples 2–3 times over the growing season in crops in...

Auswirkungen verschiedener Ackerkulturen auf die Laufkäfer (Coleoptera, Carabidae) Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Niggli, Urs.
Carabid populations (species diversity and abundance) in different crops were investigated during the period from April to July 1993 to 1995. The study was carried out on two farms in North-Western Switzerland. Nine fields with winter cereals (4x wheat, 2x spelt, 2x barley, lx rye), three rape fields, five spring cultures (3x maize, lx soybeans, lx potatoes) and an arable meadow were studied. In winter cereals, more carabid species were found than in spring cultures. In barley, we recorded fewer carabid species and individuals, larger numbers of hygrophilaus carabids and a more even population structure than in the other cereals. In rape, we recorded the highest numbers of carabid species and individuals, and very large numbers of Amara similata and A...

Building a global platform for organic farming research, innovation and technology transfer Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Andres, Christian; Willer, Helga; Baker, Brian P..
Organic food and farming systems have a great untapped potential to provide the world with healthy, high-quality food that is produced and distributed in an ecologically sound and fair way, but numerous production challenges and barriers slow the adoption of organic practices. Innovations addressing these challenges are not being developed sufficiently because of insufficient capacity in research, development and technologytransfer, especiallyinAfrica, Asia and Latin America. Given the limited resources, as well as the specific needs of organic food and farming systems, different pathways are needed to develop new technologies that are compatible with the principles of organic farming. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM...
