A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model is coupled to a remote-sensing-basedSVAT that accounts for soil and vegetation in order to study the feedback effectsbetween surface state and spatial variability in fluxes, through the induction ofspatial variability in the lower atmosphere. As such, this study focuses on sensibleheat flux exchange. The simulations indicated that changes are introduced to theflux distributions mainly at higher surface temperatures. A scale-dependentmethod is presented to account for feedback effects. This showed the mostsignificant correlation between surface and air temperature at scales from 500 to1000m and modulated the spatial variance of sensible heat flux. In the tropical mountains of Southeast Asia, slash-and-burn (S/B) agriculture is a widely practiced and important food production system. The ecosystem carbon stock in this land-use is linked not only to the carbon exchange with the atmosphere but also with food and resource security. L’énergie photosynthétiquement active (PAR) absorbée par une culture détermine son potentiel de production de biomasse. Les réflectances spectrales sont fonctionnellement liées à la fraction d’énergie PAR absorbée ou interceptée par le couvert. Leur suivi dans le temps permet d’améliorer l’estimation de la production des cultures par télédétection. La relation entre l’indice de végétation (DN) combinant les réflectances spectrales rouge et proche infrarouge, et la fraction PAR absorbée par le couvert au cours de la journée (Ɛi, est analysée à partir de simulations du modèle de transfert radiatif SAIL. Evaluation of the Penman-Monteith model for estimating soybean evapotranspiration Inra

The Penman-Monteith model with a variable surface canopy resistance (rcv) was evaluated to estimate hourly and daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc) over a soybean canopy for different soil water status and atmospheric conditions. The hourly values of rcv were computed as a function of environmental variables (air temperature, vapor pressure deficit, net radiation) and a normalized soil water factor (F), which varies between 0 (wilting point, thetaWP) and 1 (field capacity, thetaFC). Footprint issues in scintillometry over heterogeneous landscapes Inra

Scintillometry is widely recognized as a potential tool for obtaining spatially aggregated sensible heat fluxes. Although many investigations have been made over contrasting component surfaces, few aggregation schemes consider footprint contributions. In this paper an approach is 5 presented to infer average sensible heat flux over a very heterogeneous landscape by using a large aperture scintillometer. The methodology isdemonstrated on simulated data and tested on a time series of measurements obtained during the SPARC2004 experiment in Barrax, Spain. Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer Models (SVAT) and Crop Simulation Models describe physical and physiological processes occurring in crop canopies. Remote sensing data may be used through assimilation procedures for constraining or driving SVAT and crop models. These models provide continuous simulation of processes such as evapotranspiration and, thus, direct means for interpolating evapotranspiration between remote sensing data acquisitions (which is not the case for classical evapotranspiration mapping methods). Latent heat flux over Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard using the Shuttleworth and Wallace model Inra

The Shuttleworth and Wallace model (SW) was evaluated to estimate latent heat flux above a drip-irrigated Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, located in the Pencahue Valley, Region del Maule, Chile (35°22′ LS; 71°47′ LW; 150 m above sea level). The performance of the WS model (LEws) was evaluated against the eddy-covariance method (LEed) on a 30 min time interval. Results indicate that the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were 29 W m−2 and 22 W m−2, respectively. For the vine evapotranspiration (ETv), RMSE was 0.42 mm day−1 and MAE was 0.36 mm day−1. The largest disagreements between LEed and LEws were observed under dry atmospheric conditions. Vegetation water content retrieval using passive remote sensing techniques in the 0.4–2.5 μm region (reflection of solar radiation) and the 8–14 μm region (emission of thermal radiation) has given rise to an abundant literature. The wavelength range in between, where the main water absorption bands are located, has surprisingly received very little attention because of the complexity of the radiometric signal that mixes both reflected and emitted fluxes. Potentiality of optical and radar satellite data at high spatio-temporal resolutions for the monitoring of irrigated wheat crops in Morocco Inra

The potential of FORMOSAT-2 and ENVISAT/ASAR for the monitoring of irrigated wheat crops over Tensift/Marrakech semi-arid plain in Morocco is investigated. The green leaf area index (GLAI) was obtained from time series of vegetation index acquired by the FORMOSAT-2 instrument with a 25% accuracy. This information was then incorporated into a canopy functioning model to provide spatial estimates of GLAI, aerial biomass and top-soil moisture. These outputs were evaluated by comparing them to ground data collected on eight wheat fields monitored during the 2005–2006 agricultural season. Different methods have been developed to estimate evapotranspiration from remote sensing data, from empirical approaches such as the simplified relationship to complex methods based on remote sensing data assimilation along with SVAT models. The simplified relationship has been applied from small spatial scale using airborne TIR images to continental scale with NOAA data. Assimilation procedures often require remote sensing data over different spectral domains to retrieve input parameters which characterize surface properties such as albedo, emissivity or Leaf Area Index.
