A well-documented, publicly available, global data set of surface ocean carbon dioxide (CO2) parameters has been called for by international groups for nearly two decades. The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) project was initiated by the international marine carbon science community in 2007 with the aim of providing a comprehensive, publicly available, regularly updated, global data set of marine surface CO2, which had been subject to quality control (QC). Many additional CO2 data, not yet made public via the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC), were retrieved from data originators, public websites and other data centres. All data were put in a uniform format following a strict protocol. Quality control was carried out according to clearly...

Dissolved Organic Carbon in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation ArchiMer
Fontela, Marcos; Garcia-ibanez, Maria Isabel; Hansell, Dennis A.; Mercier, Herle; Perez, Fiz F.
The quantitative role of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export is evaluated by combining DOC measurements with observed water mass transports. In the eastern subpolar North Atlantic, both upper and lower limbs of the AMOC transport high-DOC waters. Deep water formation that connects the two limbs of the AMOC results in a high downward export of non-refractory DOC (197 Tg-C center dot yr(-1)). Subsequent remineralization in the lower limb of the AMOC, between subpolar and subtropical latitudes, consumes 72% of the DOC exported by the whole Atlantic Ocean. The contribution of DOC to the carbon sequestration in the North Atlantic Ocean (62 Tg-C center dot yr(-1)) is considerable and represents almost a...

Evolution of 231Pa and 230Th in overflow waters of the North Atlantic ArchiMer
Deng, Feifei; Henderson, Gideon M.; Castrillejo, Maxi; Perez, Fiz F; Steinfeldt, Reiner.
Many palaeoceanographic studies have sought to use the 231Pa∕230Th ratio as a proxy for deep ocean circulation rates in the North Atlantic. As of yet, however, no study has fully assessed the concentration of, or controls on, 230Th and 231Pa in waters immediately following ventilation at the start of Atlantic meridional overturning. To that end, full water-column 231Pa and 230Th concentrations were measured along the GEOVIDE section, sampling a range of young North Atlantic deep waters. 230Th and 231Pa concentrations in the water column are lower than those observed further south in the Atlantic, ranging between 0.06 and 12.01 µBq kg−1 and between 0.37 and 4.80 µBq kg−1, respectively. Both 230Th and 231Pa profiles generally increase with water depth from...

The Global Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP) is a synthesis effort providing regular compilations of surface to bottom ocean biogeochemical data, with an emphasis on seawater inorganic carbon chemistry and related variables determined through chemical analysis of water samples. This update of GLODAPv2, v2.2019, adds data from 116 cruises to the previous version, extending its coverage in time from 2013 to 2017, while also adding some data from prior years. GLODAPv2.2019 includes measurements from more than 1.1 million water samples from the global oceans collected on 840 cruises. The data for the 12 GLODAP core variables (salinity, oxygen, nitrate, silicate, phosphate, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, pH, CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113, and CCl4)...

Mercury distribution and transport in the North Atlantic Ocean along the GEOTRACES-GA01 transect ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Heimburger, Lars-eric; Perez, Fiz F; Garcia-ibanez, Maria Isabel; Sonke, Jeroen E.; Planquette, Helene; Lherminier, Pascale; Boutorh, Julia; Cheize, Marie; Barraqueta, Jan Lukas Menzel; Shelley, Rachel; Sarthou, Geraldine.
We report here the results of total mercury (HgT) determinations along the 2014 GEOTRACES GEOVIDE cruise (GA01 transect) in the North Atlantic Ocean (NA) from Lisbon (Portugal) to the Labrador coast (Canada). Ninety-seven percent of the HgT concentrations of unfiltered samples (HgTUNF) ranged between 0.16 and 1.00 pmol L−1. The geometric mean was 0.51 pmol L−1 for the 535 samples analysed. The dissolved fraction (< 0.45 μm) of HgT, determined on 141 samples, averaged 78 % of the HgTUNF for the whole water column. HgTUNF concentrations increased eastwards and with depth from Greenland to Europe and from sub-surface to bottom waters, respectively. The Hg distribution mirrored that of dissolved oxygen concentration, with highest HgTUNF levels associated...

Meridional overturning circulation conveys fast acidification to the deep Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Perez, Fiz F; Fontela, Marcos; Garcia-ibanez, Maria Isabel; Mercier, Herle; Velo, Anton; Lherminier, Pascale; Zunino, Patricia; De La Paz, Mercedes; Alonso-perez, Fernando; Guallart, Elisa E.; Padin, Xose A..
Since the Industrial Revolution, the North Atlantic Ocean has been accumulating anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and experiencing ocean acidification1, that is, an increase in the concentration of hydrogen ions (a reduction in pH) and a reduction in the concentration of carbonate ions. The latter causes the ‘aragonite saturation horizon’—below which waters are undersaturated with respect to a particular calcium carbonate, aragonite—to move to shallower depths (to shoal), exposing corals to corrosive waters2,3. Here we use a database analysis to show that the present rate of supply of acidified waters to the deep Atlantic could cause the aragonite saturation horizon to shoal by 1,000–1,700 metres in the subpolar North Atlantic within the next three...

Ocean acidification in the subpolar North Atlantic: rates and mechanisms controlling pH changes ArchiMer
Garcia-ibanez, Maria Isabel; Zunino, Patricia; Frob, Friederike; Carracedo, Lidia I.; Rios, Aida F.; Mercier, Herle; Olsen, Are; Perez, Fiz F.
Repeated hydrographic sections provide critically needed data on and understanding of changes in basin-wide ocean CO2 chemistry over multi-decadal timescales. Here, high-quality measurements collected at twelve cruises carried out along the same track between 1991 and 2015 have been used to determine long-term changes in ocean CO2 chemistry and ocean acidification in the Irminger and Iceland basins of the North Atlantic Ocean. Trends were determined for each of the main water masses present and are discussed in the context of the basin-wide circulation. The pH has decreased in all water masses of the Irminger and Iceland basins over the past 25 years with the greatest changes in surface and intermediate waters (between −0.0010 ± 0.0001 and −0.0018 ± 0.0001...

Temporal variability of atmospheric CO2 of the Spanish Atlantic Coast ArchiMer
Perez, Fiz F; Gago, Jesus; Alvarez, Marta; Rios, Aida F.
The variability of the molar fraction of atmospheric CO2 (xCO(2)(a)) and wind speed and direction were investigated in a coastal embayment located in the west European coast, ria de Vigo, NW Spain, along daily and seasonal time scales. Observations in the ria showed that xCO(2)(a) on a short time scale presented a much wider variability than seawater molar fraction (xCO(2)(w)), in addition, a significant covariation between xCO(2)(a) and wind was found. A sluggish atmospheric renewal due to weak winds was associated with high values of xCO(2)(a), whereas higher oceanic winds renovate the air column with more stable and constrained xCO(2)(a) values (from 350 to 370 ppm). The impact of anomalously high xCO(2)(a) on CO2 air-sea fluxes is practically not...

The Northeast Atlantic is running out of excess carbonate in the horizon of cold-water corals communities ArchiMer
Fontela, Marcos; Perez, Fiz F; Carracedo, Lidia; Padín, Xosé A.; Velo, Antón; García-ibañez, Maribel I.; Lherminier, Pascale.
The oceanic uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by human activities alters the seawater carbonate system. Here, the chemical status of the Northeast Atlantic is examined by means of a high-quality database of carbon variables based on the GO-SHIP A25 section (1997–2018). The increase of atmospheric CO2 leads to an increase in ocean anthropogenic carbon (Cant) and a decrease in carbonate that is unequivocal in the upper and mid-layers (0–2,500 m depth). In the mid-layer, the carbonate content in the Northeast Atlantic is maintained by the interplay between the northward spreading of recently conveyed Mediterranean Water with excess of carbonate and the arrival of subpolar-origin waters close to carbonate undersaturation. In this study we show...

The Ra-226-Ba relationship in the North Atlantic during GEOTRACES-GA01 ArchiMer
Le Roy, Emilie; Sanial, Virginie; Charette, Matthew A.; Van Beek, Pieter; Lacan, Francois; Jacquet, Stephanie H. M.; Henderson, Paul B.; Souhaut, Marc; Garcia-ibanez, Maribel I.; Jeandel, Catherine; Perez, Fiz F; Sarthou, Geraldine.
We report detailed sections of radium-226 (Ra-226, T-1/2 = 1602 years) activities and barium (Ba) concentrations determined in the North Atlantic (Portugal-Greenland-Canada) in the framework of the international GEO-TRACES program (GA01 section - GEOVIDE project, May-July 2014). Dissolved Ra-226 and Ba are strongly correlated along the section, a pattern that may reflect their similar chemical behavior. Because Ra-226 and Ba have been widely used as tracers of water masses and ocean mixing, we investigated their behavior more thoroughly in this crucial region for thermohaline circulation, taking advantage of the contrasting biogeochemical patterns existing along the GA01 section. We used an optimum multiparameter (OMP) analysis to distinguish the relative...

Transport and storage of anthropogenic C in the North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean ArchiMer
Racape, Virginie; Zunino, Patricia; Mercier, Herle; Lherminier, Pascale; Bopp, Laurent; Perez, Fiz F; Gehlen, Marion.
The North Atlantic Ocean is a major sink region for atmospheric CO2 and contributes to the storage of anthropogenic carbon (Cant). While there is general agreement that the intensity of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) modulates uptake, transport and storage of Cant in the North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean, processes controlling their recent variability and evolution over the 21st century remain uncertain. This study investigates the relationship between transport, air-sea flux and storage rate of Cant in the North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean over the past 53 years. Its relies on the combined analysis of a multiannual in situ data set and outputs from a global biogeochemical ocean general circulation model (NEMO-PISCES) at 1/2 degrees spatial...
