EFFECT OF SELENITE ON THE TOTAL POLYPHENOL CONTENT AND ANTIOXIDATIVE ACTIVITY OF AQUEOUS AND ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS IN SPROUTS OF FOUR AGRONOMIC SPECIES R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Motomura,Yoshie; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie; Mora Gil,Maria de la Luz.
Sprouts from some agricultural plants grown under dark conditions are known to contain some functional food ingredients. Recently, great attention has been paid to foods with natural antioxidative ingredients for human health and animal feed. Among the functional food compounds, phenolics and polyphenols are the most desirable food bioactives due to their antioxidative activity. The aim of this study was to determine the differences between aqueous and ethanohc extracts and the effect of selenite on the polyphenol content, and whether the antioxidative activity of selenite-treated sprouts growing in Petri dishes is enhanced compared to non-treated ones. The total polyphenol content in aqueous extract and ethanolic extract increased significantly in wheat...

Mapping aluminum tolerance loci in cereals: A tool available for crop breeding Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Inostroza-Blancheteau,Claudio; Soto,Braulio; Ibáñez,Cristian; Ulloa,Pilar; Aquea,Felipe; Arce-Johnson,Patricio; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie.
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the main factor limiting crop productivity in acidic soils around the world. In cereals, this problem reduces crop yields by 30-40%. The use of DNA-based markers linked to phenotypic traits is an interesting alternative approach. Strategies such as molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) in conjunction with bioinformatics-based tools such as graphical genotypes (GGT) have been important for confirming introgression of genes or genomic regions in cereals but also to reduce the time and cost of identifying them through genetic selection. These biotechnologies also make it possible to identify target genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) that can be potentially used in similar crops to increase their productivity. This review...

Photosynthetic and antioxidant performance are differentially affected by short-term nitrogen supply in highbush blueberry cultivars Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Yañez-Mansilla,Erwin; Cartes,Paula; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie; Ribera-Fonseca,Alejandra; Alberdi,Miren.
Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for photosynthesis and may influence phenolic compound synthesis in higher plants. The effect of different amounts of N (0 to 38 mM) provided on a short-term (4 d) basis on the photosynthetic and antioxidant performance of highbush blueberry cultivars (Legacy and Bluegold) grown in a nutrient solution was studied. In both cultivars, the N concentration of leaves slightly increased in response to the N supply, with Bluegold frequently showing higher N concentrations than Legacy. Photosynthesis was reduced in Bluegold at the highest N dose, whereas in Legacy, a decrease of CO2 assimilation occurred under N starvation. This decrease in photosynthesis was accompanied by enhanced lipid peroxidation but only in Bluegold. In...

The effect of foliar boron spraying on the fruit features of Brigitta and Legacy highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivars Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Meriño-Gergichevich,Cristian; Pacheco,Eduardo; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie.
C. Meriño-Gergichevich, E. Pacheco, and M. Reyes-Díaz. 2016. The effect of foliar boron spraying on the fruit features of Brigitta and Legacy highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivars. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):452-463. Boron (B) is associated with reproductive and antioxidant metabolism in plants, and in southern Chile, the deficiency of this micronutrient is ameliorated through foliar applications that are a part of agricultural management, thus ensuring the productivity of crops including highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). However, the appropriate B dosage for this species is unknown, so the aim of this study was to evaluate foliar B application on fruit quality in highbush blueberry in southern Chile. During the 2014-2015 season,...
