Afgræsning af græsblandinger med bælgplanter og cikorie Organic Eprints

Græsblandinger med hvidkløver, rødkløver, lucerne og cikorie havde alle en god foderkvalitet og gav mulighed for en høj produktion af differentieret mælk ved betydelig grad af afgræsning. Det kræver afgræsningssystemer tilpasset den enkelte græsblanding at få en optimal produktion.

Alfa-tocopherol and beta-carotene in roughages and milk in organic dairy herds Organic Eprints

The aim of the present study was to increase our knowledge about the vitamin content in roughage at harvest and during storage on organic commercial farms and to analyze the vitamin content in the milk. Roughages produced at the five organic dairy farms were monitored from harvest when the silage was laid in the silo and until the roughage was fed during the winter. The roughages had average α-tocopherol and β-carotene contents during the feeding period of, respectively, 30 mg and 21 mg per kg DM in grass-clover silage (after 281 days at storage), 13 mg and 8 mg per kg DM in maize wholecrop silage (stored for 194 days) and 28 mg and 9 mg per kg DM in cereal wholecrop silage (after 210 days from ensiling to feeding). Igangværende undersøgelse på Foulum har vist, at der er stor forskel på mineralsammensætningen i forskellige græsmarksarter. Mineralprofilen i den enkelte art bliver næsten ikke påvirket af jordtypen. En bedre styret mineralsammensætning forventes derfor mulig i fremtiden.

Besætningens forsyning med vitaminer og mineraler – case studier og model Organic Eprints

I FØJO3 projektet ECOVIT undersøges, hvorvidt det er muligt for en bedrift med økologisk mælkeproduktion at blive selvforsynende med vitaminer og mineraler. I projektet indgik et samarbejde med 5 private gårde med mælkeproduktion. På disse gårde blev der fundet en positiv sammenhæng mellem indholdet af vitaminer i det producerede grovfoder og indholdet i den mælk, der blev produceret heraf. Der er udviklet en model til at beregne det forventede indhold af vitaminer (fokus på A og E) og mineraler (fokus på Cu, Zn og Se) i hjemmeavlet foder som funktion af de faktorer, der påvirker indholdet. Can higher legume diversity reduce clover soil fatigue? Organic Eprints

White clover soil fatigue is an increasing problem in Danish organic dairy farms. The clover cyst nematode (Heterodera trifolii) has been found to play a major role in the problem. Grassland legume species less readily attacked by H. trifolii and less favourable for its reproduction than white clover may offer possibilities for relieving the soil fatigue. In 2005, screenings were made of nine grass-land legume species / varieties in a field with a rather high level of H. trifolii infestation, pre-cropped with grass/white clover, and in a field with a low infesta-tion level, pre-cropped with maize. The objective of the study was to assess the impact on emission of green house gasses (GHG) from production of cheese based on milk from different type of hay and breed of cows, and as an integrated part to give figures for emission from production of hay in climate lees favorable for on field hay drying. Emission of GHG was estimate using life cycle assessment with kg of milk and kg of energy corrected milk (ECM) delivered to the dairy factory, and kg of cheese at the retailor level in Denmark as functional units. Content of fatty acids, vitamin E and carotenoids in milk and herbage as affected by sward composition and period of grazing Organic Eprints

The quality of organic milk is affected by feed composition, and especially the high use of legumes has been identified as the reason for high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids and tocopherols in organic milk. Four different pastures composed of mainly white clover (WCL), red clover (RCL), lucerne (LUC) or chicory (CIK), respectively, were established to investigate the influence of sward composition on the milk quality of grazing cows. On three occasions during the grazing period (May, June and August), groups of 12 Holstein cows were grazing the pastures for two weeks. Cows fed vitamin-rich feed produce vitamin-rich milk Organic Eprints

On five organic dairy farms there was a positive effect of a high vitamin content in the home-grown roughage on the vitamin content of the milk produced. Vitamins and minerals are of crucial importance for the health and performance of the animals, and they also affect the nutritional value of the products. The highest concentrations of pro-vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and vitamin E (alfa-tocopherol) are found in grass, legumes and other green plants, while seeds and whole-crop silage only contain small amounts of vitamins. While the requirements for for fat-soluble vitamins of grazing cattle are normally met via their intake from pasture, the supply of fat-soluble vitamins may decrease to very low amounts when conserved herbage is used...

Effect of concentrate supplementation level on production, health and efficiency in an organic dairy herd Organic Eprints

The proportions of organic feed and roughage in the feed ration for organic dairy cows have to reach 100 and 60%, respectively, in 2005. The aim of this study was to elucidate the long-term effects of reducing or omitting concentrate supplementation to high genetic merit dairy cows on a basal ad libitum diet of clover-grass (silage and grazing). Three concentrate levels, N, L and L+ (38, 0 and 19% of dry matter (DM) intake, respectively) were investigated in a herd of 60 cows during 3 years. The production in group N was 6723 kg energy corrected milk (ECM) per cow year, based on an intake of 6226 kg DM of which 38% was concentrates. Effect of grazing white clover pasture on milk composition of Holstein and Jersey cows Organic Eprints

Because of its high saturated fatty acid (FA) content milk fat is considered hypercholesterolemic. Intake of unsaturated FA (UFA) reduces the plasma cholesterol concentrations. Especially conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) have shown positive effects on cardiovascular diseases, prevention of cancer and obesity. The aim of our project is to investigate how grazing can enhance the content of these beneficiary FA in milk. For bith types of cow races we observed no direct effect of increased grazing in the diet on the short chain FA (SCFA) content in milk, implying that the de novo synthesis of these FA remained unaffected. Effect of Herbage on Milk Composition Organic Eprints

A grazing study was performed in 2006 over three two-week periods in May, June and August at the organic research station Rugballegaard, Denmark, where a herd of 48 Holstein dairy cows was split into four groups of 12 cows. Each group grazed one of four swards: 1) lucerne, 2) red clover, 3) white clover and 4) white clover with chicory, all four in mixture with perennial ryegrass. Milk and grass samples were analyzed to study the effect of each sward type on milk composition as well as seasonal variations.

Forsyningen af de økologiske husdyr med mineraler og vitaminer er et af de områder, hvor der endnu ikke er fundet løsninger, som udnytter muligheden for recirkulering og selvforsyning på bedriften. Formålet med dette forsøg var at undersøge, om en integreret vitamin- og mineralforsyning kunne opnås i økologisk mælkeproduktion ved i så høj grad som muligt at anvende hjemmedyrkede grovfodermidler med et højt naturligt indhold af vitaminer og mineraler. Estimering af hvidkløver i afgræsningsmarken Organic Eprints

Andelen af hvidkløver i afgræsningsmarker bestemt ved visuel vurdering overvurderer indholdet af hvidkløver i forhold til botanisk bestemmelse baseret på planteprøver som håndsorteres. Forskellen er størst i foråret ved lille afgræsningshøjde. Ved bedømmelser af hvidkløverandelen ved 20 til 50 stikprøver fordelt tilfældigt på større arealer kan den visuelt bestemte kløverandel omregnes til botanisk bestemt indhold ved de udledte ligninger, med en sikkerhed på 2-3%-enheder.

Flere vitaminer i grovfoder giver flere vitaminer i mælken Organic Eprints

På 5 økologiske gårde med mælkeproduktion blev der fundet en positiv sammenhæng mellem indholdet af vitaminer i det producerede grovfoder og indholdet i den mælk, der blev produceret heraf. Vitaminforsyningen er af stor vigtighed for køernes sundhed og trivsel, ligesom den har stor indflydelse på den producerede mælks ernæringsmæssige kvalitet. Det højeste indhold af vitaminer findes normalt i friske grønne blade på afgrøderne. For malkekvæg kan der derfor være problemer med at sikre forsyningen med de fedtopløselige vitaminer i vinterperioden, hvor fodret består af konserverede og lagrede fodermidler, mens køer på græs i sommerperioden oftest vil få vitaminbehovet opfyldt. Græsmarken - afgræsningssystem, artssammensætning og kløvertræthed Organic Eprints

Med mindst 60% grovfoder i rationen og 100% økologisk foder er det vigtigt med en stor optagelse under afgræsning, hvilket for-udsætter et stort og godt tilbud af kløvergræs i marken. Udfordringen er både at opfylde det-te behov og samtidig at opnå en høj produkti-vitet i marken. Der er yderligere kommet en ny sædskiftemæssig udfordring, idet kløver-træthed er blevet et udbredt fænomen i de kløverrige sædskifter tæt på gården, hvor af-græsning foregår. Flere forsøg har vist, at optagelsen øges med stigende tilbud (f.eks. Mayne & Peyraud, 1996). En væsentlig grund hertil er, at køerne har mulighed for at optage mere pr. bid. Grazing with heifers and sows alone or mixed: herbage quality, sward structure and animal weight gain Organic Eprints

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of mixed grazing (MI) by sows and heifers with alternate grazing (AL) or grazing heifers (HN) and sows (SN) alone on animal weight gain, sward structure, herbage quality and composition, and selection during grazing. Mixed or alternate grazing consistently improved the weight gain in both heifers and sows, compared with grazing one species alone, but the positive effect was statistically significant only for heifers. The herbage quality of the MI and AL systems was better compared with the SN system, but not clearly better compared with the HN system. Herbs in grasslands - effect of slurry and grazing/cutting on species composition and nutritive value Organic Eprints

Herbs are established in many organic grasslands due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting management and slurry applications. The competitiveness of the species varied greatly. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) competed best under cutting; in contrast, chicory (Cichorium intybus) competed best under grazing.
