The Brazilian Microbiome Project (BMP) aims to assemble a Brazilian Metagenomic Consortium/Database. At present, many metagenomic projects underway in Brazil are widely known. Our goal in this initiative is to co-ordinate and standardize these together with new projects to come. It is estimated that Brazil hosts approximately 20 % of the entire world's macroorganism biological diversity. It is 1 of the 17 countries that share nearly 70 % of the world's catalogued animal and plant species, and is recognized as one of the most megadiverse countries. At the end of 2012, Brazil has joined GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility), as associated member, to improve the access to the Brazilian biodiversity data in a free and open way. This was an important... |

During a survey of the occurrence of Azospirillum spp. in cereal roots, we obtained 119 isolates which could not be identified as members of one of the three previously described Azospirillum species. These strains formed a very homogeneous group of N2-fixing, microaerobic, motile, vibrioid, gram-negative rod-shaped organisms which formed a veillike pellicle in semisolid medium similar to that of Azospirillum spp. However, the new isolates differed from Azospirillum spp. by their smaller cell width (0.6 to 0.7 μm), variable flagellation (one to three flagella on one or both poles), moist brownish colonies, and broader pH and oxygen tolerance for nitrogenase activity. Organic acids were the preferred carbon sources, but glucose, galactose,... |

High temperatures can affect the survival, establishment and symbiotic properties of Rhizobium strains. Bean nodulating Rhizobium strains are considered particularly sensitive because on this strains genetic recombinations and/or deletions occur frequently, thus compromising the use of these bacteria as inoculants. Rhizobium tropici and R. leguminosarum bv. phaseoli strains isolated from cerrado soils were exposed to thermal stress and the strains' growth, survival and symbiotic relationships as well as alterations in their genotypic and phenotypic characteristics were analysed. After successive thermal shocks at 45 degrees C for four hours, survival capacity appeared to be strain-specific, independent of thermo-tolerance and was more apparent in R.... |

A tropical Brazilian soil (Cerrado) was planted with four cultivars of maize (CMS04, CMS11, CMS22 and CMS36) and the genetic diversity of the Paenibacillus polymyxa populations present in their rhizospheres was determined after 90 days of sowing. For that, a total of 67 isolates were identified as R polymyxa by classical biochemical tests and were analyzed for DNA polymorphism with the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplification of repetitive DNA sequences (rep) methods. The amplification patterns obtained using three arbitrary primers and the primer BOXA1R were used separately to construct dendrograms based on the unweighted pair groups method with arithmetic means (UPGMA). Fifty-four genotypic groups were formed when data from different... |

The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of oil contamination and biostimulation (soil pH raise, and nitrogen, phosphate and sulphur addition) on the diversity of a bacterial community of an acidic Cambisol under Atlantic Forest. The experiment was based on the enumeration of bacterial populations and hydrocarbon degraders in microcosms through the use of conventional plating techniques and molecular fingerprinting of samples directly from the environment. PCR followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to generate microbial community fingerprints employing 16S rRNA gene as molecular marker. Biostimulation led to increases of soil pH (to 7.0) and of the levels of phosphorus and K, Ca, and Mg. Oil contamination caused an... |
