The AgroGeoTrace (AGT) project makes use of Geographical Information Systems and multichannel information technologies to facilitate the access of final consumers to local food speciality products. The project builds a prototype of an informative system designed, first, to help consumers to understand the agronomic and technological characteristics that make the targeted products special ones, and, second, to precisely and easily locate the sites (farms and oil mills) where they can buy them. The information made available through the project is intended to the symbolic relocalization of the regional products, hence to promote them and to create added value. The final outcomes of the project are the virtual maps of on-farm shops made available on Digital... |

The process of change in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from trade and market distorting measures to more neutral interventions has been long, but in this process the 2003 reform (the so-called Fischler reform) has been the most important step, leading to a more decoupled, and hence less market distorting, support (Oecd, 2004) and introducing the fully decoupled Single Farm Payment Scheme (SFP). In this paper, we estimate a model of operators’ off-farm labour participation from a panel of Italian COP farms drawn from the FADN. To this purpose we use a random effects probit model, thus controlling for unobserved heterogeneity. The results suggest that the effects of the reform on off-farm labour participation, if any, are weak. No variable directly... |

Using the data gathered by the Business Survey on Agriculture survey on a stratified random sample of Italian farm businesses below 4 European economic size units as a case study, this paper explores the diffusion of diversification strategies among small farms. The analysis has shown that more than a half of small farms is adopting some form of diversification. Small farms are more strongly involved in pluriactivity, while their involvement in broadening and deepening strategies appears only marginal. This latter result is partly due to the underevaluation of diversification caused by the lack of detailed statistical information about diversified activities used by farms, and, partly, due to the structural characteristics of small farms. Smaller farms are... |

This paper reports a study of the horticultural chain in Fiji. The objectives of the research was to understand how the domestic horticultural supply could meet the demand currently generated by the tourism sector, i.e. how new income opportunities for the rural people could be generated by feeding the tourists. If policy interventions are to be directed at strengthening backward economic linkages between tourism and local food supplier, a better understanding of factors driving farmers marketing choice is required. This paper aims to contribute in this regard by analyzing the decisions of farmers to engage in direct selling to hotels. Hotels pay premium prices for quality fresh produce and direct marketing can allow farmers to retain the highest... |
