An analysis of a number of published surveys of dairy farms in Europe is used to exemplify the consequences of the use of external feed on nitrogen loss from organic animal productions. It is concluded that the present international regulations are not adequate to enforce the adoption of environmentally friendly and sustainable organic production systems, in harmonious balance between crop production and animal husbandry.

Clover species in grass-clover silages affects milk fatty acid composition Organic Eprints

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of clover species on milk fatty acid (FA) composition. Lactating dairy cows were allocated to two groups and fed grass-clover silage containing either white clover (WC) or red clover (RC), without or with concentrate supplementation. No significant interaction of clover species with concentrate supplementation could be observed. RC milk had significantly higher proportion of polyunsaturated FAs (P<0.001), particularly C18:3n-3 (P<0.001), and contained a higher n-3/n-6 FA ratio (P<0.05) than WC milk. It is concluded that RC silage, independent of concentrate supply, yielded milk with more beneficial FA composition than WC silage.

Effect of clover species in grass-clover silages and concentrate supplementation on milk fatty acid composition Organic Eprints

The effect of clover species and level of concentrate supplementation on milk fatty acid (FA) composition has been studied. White (WC) and red clover (RC) grown in mixture with grasses were preserved in round bales and fed to autumn calving dairy cows during the first 10 weeks of lactation. Milk FA was higher in linolenic acid, vaccenic acid and rumenic acid for RC than for WC silage (0.90 vs. 0.79 %, 1.52 vs. 1.36 %, 0.90 vs. 0.75 % for these 3 FA, re-spectively), and RC silage gave a higher n-3/n-6 milk FA ratio than WC (0.98 vs. 0.72). Two feeding experiments were performed to study the effects of silage botanical composition, regrowth interval and α-tocopherol supplementation on the fatty acid (FA) composition and α-tocopherol, β-carotene and retinol concentrations of milk. In experiment 1, 24 Swedish Red dairy cows were fed two- or three-cut red clover-grass silages (R2 and R3, respectively), or two-cut birdsfoot trefoil-grass silage (B2). A 2 × 2 factorial continuous experiment was conducted with 28 Norwegian Red dairy cows in early lactation to compare milk content of phytoestrogens when feeding ad libitum white clover (WCS) or red clover (RCS) grass silages prepared from the second and third cut without and with 10 kg/d supplementation of a standard concentrate. The cows were offered either RCS or WCS for 88 d (period 1) and thereafter a mixed red clover-white clover-grass silage for 48 d (period 2). Effekten av kløverart og høstetid på innhold og sammensetning av fettsyrer i avlingen fra økologisk kløvereng ble undersøkt. Kløverart påvirket ikke innholdet av fettsyrer men økende innhold av rødkløver økte andelen av alfalinolensyre. Tidlig 1. slått førte til høyere innhold av fettsyrer og større andel av alfalinolensyre enn normal høstetid.

Effekt av surfôr fra kortvarig eng eller langvarig eng på kvalitet i kumelk Organic Eprints

Surfôr fra kortvarig eng har gitt høyere andel av flerumettede fettsyrer i melk sammenlignet med surfôr fra langvarig eng men dette har ikke ført til at melka ble mer utsatt for lysindusert oksidasjon. Tilskudd av α-tokoferol økte innholdet av α-tokoferol i melka men hadde ingen effekt på melkas oksidative stabilitet. Surfôr fra kortvarig eng ga høyere innhold av isoflavoner og lavere innhold av lignaner i melk enn surfôr fra langvarig eng.

Feed nitrogen conversion in lactating dairy cows on pasture as affected by concentrate supplementation Organic Eprints

The effect of concentrate supplementation on nitrogen (N) intake and excretion in grazing lactating dairy cows was determined in three herds in Norway. Grazing trials were conducted with each herd in June and August for two consecutive years. The average supplementation was 1.8 (S.D. 2.1) kg DM/day, and the concentrate was based on grain with a N content ranging from 18.7 to 24 g/kg DM. Herbage DM and N intake were reduced with increasing supplementation, but total DM and N intake increased. Milk yield and protein content increased by 1.1 kg milk and 0.28 g protein per kg milk for each kg extra concentrate. Use of high energy feed supplementation can improve the protein retention by the cattle, and it has been suggested as a way to increase the nitrogen (N) effi-ciency of dairy production. However, in praxis feed supplementation is also used to increase the intensity of animal production above the level that can be supported by the farm's local plant production. A collection of published surveys showed that dairy farms that buy feed are considerably lees N efficient than farms that supply the entire animal ration from their own plant production. Daglig opptak av surfôrtørrstoff, energi og protein var langt høgere hos NRF kyrne enn STN kyrne. NRF kyrne hadde også et påviselig høgere opptak av grovfôr og NDF enn STN kyrne uttrykt per 100 kg kroppsvekt.STN kyrne la mer på seg enn NRF kyrne, og kyrne som fikk kraftfôr la mer på seg enn kyr uten kraftfôr, men verken rase eller kraftfôrnivå hadde signifikant effekt på dyras vektendring. Det ble ikke påvist noen signifikante samspilleffekter mellom rase og kraftfôrnivå på noen av opptaksparametrene.Som forventet produserte NRF kyrne mer mjølk og EKM enn STN kyrne, men innholdet av fett og protein i mjølka var høgest hos STN kyrne. Hydrogenering av fettsyrer i vomma - effekt av botanisk sammenstening av surfôret Organic Eprints

Surfôr fra kortvarig eng (KS) hadde lavere innhold av C18:3c9,12,15 enn surfôr fra langvarig eng(LS)og raigrassurfôr. Likevel ga surfôr fra KS høyest innhold av C18:3c9,12,15 i melk. Årsaken var redusert hydrogenering i vomma. Dette gjaldt også summen av alle umettede C18-fettsyrer men ikke C18:1c9 eller C18:2c9,12. Årsaken til redusert hydrogenering for KS kan være rødkløverens innhold av PPO.

Omsetjing av planteøstrogen hos mjølkeku - effekt av botanisk samansetjing av surfôret Organic Eprints

Planteøstrogena formononetin og daidzein blir i stor grad omsatt til equol og vidare til ukjende sambindingar i vomma. Nedbrytinga av planteøstrogena i vom var sterkare i surfôr laga på raigras og langvarig artsrik eng enn i surfôr laga av timoteieng eller kortvarig eng med raudkløver. Attfinninga av planteøstrogena var størst i gjødsel og minst i mjølk. Omsetjinga av equol i kroppen (intermediær) var avgrensa av fart (rate limiting) medan dette synest ikkje å vere tilfelle i vom og tarm.

The effect of red clover proportion in timothy silage on nitrogen utilization in lactating dairy cows Organic Eprints

Three multiparous cannulated dairy cows were used to test the effect of including 0, 23 % and 46 % red clover (RC) on dry matter (DM) basis in timothy (T) silage on nitrogen (N) intake, utilization and excretion. The cows were offered a fixed ration; 13 kg silage and 7 kg concentrate DM. The N intake and urine N excretion increased with increasing silage clover proportion.
