An annotated index to names of Odonata used in publications by M. A. Lieftinck Naturalis
Tol, J. van.
An index to all names of Odonata mentioned in publications of Maurits Anne Lieftinck (19041985) is provided. Lieftinck mainly published on the Odonata faunas of the Indo-Australian and Palaearctic regions. He revised many genera, described over 600 species and also examined hundreds of primary types of previously described species. He included with his descriptions and revisions accurate line illustrations and carefully composed lists of synonymies and references. The index to his works is therefore a key to nearly the full literature of Indo-Australian Odonata, as well as to valuable museum collections of, especially Indo-Australian, Odonata.

Non-professional taxonomists have been responsible for describing more than half of the animal species discovered in Europe from 1998 to 2007 (see also Nature 467, 788; 2010). The extraordinary current rate of description of new species makes Europe an unexpected frontier for biodiversity exploration. The Fauna Europaea database (http://www.faunaeur.org), released in 2004, lists more than 125,000 European species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals. More than 700 new species are described each year in Europe — four times the rate of two centuries ago. However, we have not yet reached saturation in the inventory of European fauna, and we cannot accurately estimate the total number of species living in the continent's ecosystems.

The waters of the State Reserve "De Groote Peel", situated on the border of the provinces of North-Brabant and Limburg in the Netherlands, were investigated during Easter 1971 (8-11th of April). The reserve is a former peat-moor, where peat was cut until the first half of this century. Now vast areas of Molinia caerulea with wild shoots of Salix aurita and Betula pubescens are found. Special attention was paid to waterbugs (Heteroptera aquatica and semi-aquatica) and waterbeetles (Coleoptera aquatica). The species present indicate slightly polluted oligotrophic water. The pollution is probably caused by three factors: the inflow of eutrophic water, the breeding of Blackheaded Gulls (Larus ridibundus) and the tourists. Table 1 gives a list of the...

New species in the Old World: Europe as a frontier in biodiversity exploration, a test bed for 21st century taxonomy Naturalis
Fontaine, B.; Achterberg, C. van; Alonso-Zarazaga, M.A.; Araujo, R.; Asche, M.; Aspöck, H.; Aspöck, U.; Audisio, P.; Aukema, B.; Bailly, N.; Balsamo, M.; Bank, R.A.; Belfiore, C.; Bogdanowicz, W.; Boxshall, G.; Burckhardt, D.; Chylarecki, P.; Deharveng, L.; Dubois, A.; Enghoff, H.; Fochetti, R.; Fontaine, C.; Gargominy, O.; Lopez, M.S.G.; Goujet, D.; Harvey, M.S.; Heller, K.-G.; Helsdingen, P. van; Hoch, H.; Jong, Y. de; Karsholt, O.; Los, W.; Magowski, W.; Massard, J.A.; McInnes, S.J.; Mendes, L.F.; Mey, E.; Michelsen, V.; Minelli, A.; Nafria, J.M.N.; Nieukerken, E.J. van; Pape, Th.; Prins, W. de; Ramos, M.; Ricci, C.; Roselaar, C.; Rota, E.; Segers, H.; Timm, T.; Tol, J. van; Bouchet, P..
The number of described species on the planet is about 1.9 million, with ca. 17,000 new species described annually, mostly from the tropics. However, taxonomy is usually described as a science in crisis, lacking manpower and funding, a politically acknowledged problem known as the Taxonomic Impediment. Using data from the Fauna Europaea database and the Zoological Record, we show that contrary to general belief, developed and heavily-studied parts of the world are important reservoirs of unknown species. In Europe, new species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals are being discovered and named at an unprecedented rate: since the 1950s, more than 770 new species are on average described each year from Europe, which add to the 125,000...

Notes on some species of the genus Protosticta from Vietnam (Odonata, Platystictidae) Naturalis
Tol, J. van.
Based on a study of various recent collections of Protosticta Selys from Vietnam, the dragonfly species P. grandis Asahina and P. khaosoidaoensis Asahina (sensu stricto) are reported from Vietnam for the first time. New records are provided for P. satoi Asahina (new status), and the affinities of P. satoi and P. beaumonti Wilson are discussed. The status of a very dark form of Protosticta satoi found in Tam Dao (northern Vietnam) is also discussed. Two species from Chu Yang Sin National Park (southern Vietnam, Dak Lak province) are described as new to science, viz. P. caroli spec. nov. and P. linnaei spec. nov.

Notes on species of the genus Brachyptera newport (Plecoptera) from the Netherlands and Switzerland Naturalis
Tol, J. van.
A re-examination of the Dutch material of the stonefly genus Brachyptera resulted in the establishment of B. braueri (Klapálek, 1900) (new to the Netherlands) and B. risi (Morton, 1896) as indigenous species, although both are now locally extinct. The occurrence of B. trifasciata (Pictet) in this country could not be confirmed. B. braueri is also recorded from Switzerland for the first time.

Redefining the damselfly families: a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Zygoptera (Odonata) Naturalis
Dijkstra, K.-D.B.; Kalkman, V.J.; Dow, R.A.; Stokvis, F.R.; Tol, J. van.
An extensive molecular phylogenetic reconstruction of the suborder Zygoptera of the Odonata is presented, based on mitochondrial (16S, COI) and nuclear (28S) data of 59% of the 310 genera recognized and all (suspected) families except the monotypic Hemiphlebiidae. A partial reclassification is proposed, incorporating morphological characters. Many traditional families are recovered as monophyletic, but reorganization of the superfamily Coenagrionoidea into three families is proposed: Isostictidae, Platycnemididae and Coenagrionidae. Archboldargia Lieftinck, Hylaeargia Lieftinck, Palaiargia Forster, ¨ Papuargia Lieftinck and Onychargia Selys are transferred from Coenagrionidae to Platycnemididae, and Leptocnemis Selys, Oreocnemis Pinhey and Thaumatagrion...
